Curriculum

We continued to ensure that our children had a broad and enriching curriculum in the school. All staff continue to believe strongly that we are all learners and have attended courses, learnt new skills, and updated and reviewed school policies and practice in line with the curriculum.

The children responded well to our approach to learning in all year groups. They were constantly being stimulated through carefully structured activities and investigations that challenged and motivated them. The children were actively involved in their learning and developed their independence and many new skills throughout the year. Visits and experiences outside the classroom were arranged to enrich the school day and we also welcomed people into the school when appropriate. Many thanks to all parents/guardians and members of the community for their continued support regarding these visits.

The school have spent the year integrating the current Digital Competency Framework and are now trialling aspects of the New Curriculum for Wales.

Progress on our School Development PlanThe School Development Plan is a vital part of the school’s growth and reflects the development of our unique two site situation. Suggestions and ideas were gathered from all interested parties throughout the academic year, in order for the plan to be established by October.

Priorities for the academic year 2019-20 were;

Priority 1 - Consistency in Welsh Oracy

Aim: Improve consistency of the planning and delivery of Welsh oracy

Priority 2 – Effective use of numeracy across the curriculum

Aim: Improve the range and suitability of numeracy opportunities across the school

Priority 3 – Develop pupils ability to challenge themselves, work independently and display resilience

Aim: Pupils to become ambitious, capable learners

Priority 4 – Increase understanding and knowledge of pupil and family mental health and wellbeing

Aim: Staff and governors will have an understanding of Mental Health and Wellbeing and the importance of developing and applying a whole school approach. Staff will be confident and knowledgeable to teach regarding Mental Health and Wellbeing. Pupils, staff, parents/carers and governors will be confident about discussing and raising issues and questions regarding Mental Health and Wellbeing. The school community will feel better supported with Mental Health and Wellbeing and will have a better understanding of signs, symptoms and support available.

Priority 5 – Increase the quality and breadth of topic work

Aim: To develop pupil led topics and ensure full coverage of the curriculum over the course of the year.

Priority 6 – Universal provision

Aim: Enable all pupils to learn effectively within the core classroom

Priority 7 – Develop the school as a learning organisation

Aim: To identify and improve aspects of communication, professional learning and dissemination

School PoliciesOur school policies are subject to a rigorous reviewing structure which is on-going.

Healthy Schools InitiativesWe have had many exciting projects over the years which have all become embedded into our daily routines and become part of our working practice. Children continued to have access to drinking water throughout the school day. All children were encouraged to bring healthy snacks at playtime. Children cared for the area in which they live by participating in local initiatives. Our outdoor areas are constantly in use, with new ideas transforming our environment. We are grateful to Friends of Gwersyllt CP ( now PTA) as they raise additional funds to enable us to work on these areas. Year 5 and 6 pupils are selected and trained as Play Makers/Sports Leaders. These pupils encourage others to partake in sport and physical education activities.

Additional Learning Needs (ALN)We provided additional support for children who experienced mild or moderate learning difficulties, through daily support groups. The school works with both the parents/guardians and the Local Authority in implementing early intervention for those children who require support.

A child has special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which requires special educational provision to be made for them. A learning difficulty means that the child has significantly greater difficulty in learning than most children of the same age or that the child has a disability that needs different educational facilities from those that the school generally provides for children.

School assessment procedures and standardised testing allowed staff to accurately identify pupils who may need additional support. Focused targets and strategies were developed for each of these children, and support provided within small groups, or individually, depending on the needs of the child. These targets were put together and overseen by Mrs Julie Walker our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator, while class based TAs and Mrs O’Toole worked with our Foundation Phase pupils

and our key stage 2 pupils providing additional numeracy and literacy sessions to help them in improving their basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Review meetings took place with the SENCo, teachers and parents to enable all relevant stakeholders to have input into Individual Education Plans. External agencies attend when necessary.

Data

AttendanceAttendance is very important and we work hard with our Educational Welfare Officer and our parents/guardians to ensure that children attend school regularly. I would like to thank all those parents/guardians who support us on this venture and ensure that their children come to school every day and only stay at home when they are ill. It helps children establish routines and settle into school smoothly. The importance of establishing excellent routines at an early age cannot be stressed enough. Children miss vital stages of their social and educational development by being absent from school and we would urge all parents/guardians to encourage a regular attendance pattern from the very beginning of a child’s school life. Our school target for 2019-20 is 95.6%.

This grant was spent in full and has resulted in improved learner outcomes and continued effective improvement in the following areas :-

1. To engage with families to create a positive image of school and to enable parents to support their children’s learning and well-being effectively

2. To support children with specific behavioural needs to access the curriculum, through providing nurture and time out provision3. Develop school as learning organisation for Parents and families.Balance figure as at 31st March 2020 in the Private school fund account-£14,080.44

Community and Families

Gwersyllt Community Primary School has extensive community links, working with local businesses, police and other local groups. As part of our school improvement we encourage parents/guardians and the community to be actively involved in

school. Mrs O’Toole worked with families throughout the year to provide activities and support to enhance learning and wellbeing. Please see the website for further information.

Many parents have started as volunteers and gone on to receive free training for qualifications through Family Learning and Coleg Cambria. Some have secured employment following this. Please enquire in school if you would like to volunteer. All volunteers are required to complete DBS security checks. Forms are available in the school office.

A range of nurture intervention groups provided pupils with wellbeing support.

Sport/Extra-curricular activitiesThe school offers many additional opportunities for our young people. We have before and afterschool clubs, both of which help support working parents/guardians, and those who wish to continue their own education. These are open to all foundation phase and key stage 2 pupils, from 7.30am (Breakfast Club) until 5.30pm (Playmates). During the school year the pupils have had the opportunity to enjoy various afterschool clubs, such as Board Games Club, Netball Club, Badminton Club, Bible Club, Recorder Club, Knitting Club and Football Club to name just a few. These all proved to be very popular and were well attended.

Welsh language developmentStaff and pupils at the primary school value their culture and language and strive to improve the fluency of their everyday conversational Welsh. We are committed to improving the use of the Welsh language around our school environment and started working towards the Bronze Award for Cymraeg Campus through the Local Authority. Parents have received opportunities to learn welsh with our pupils from Criw Cymraeg.
