Despite positive signs in an

economy that was on the verge of

collapse less than a year ago, President

Barack Obama still seems to have to

prove himself in new ways.

Last week, during his landmark speech

to a joint session of the Congress, Senator

Joe Wilson (Rep, South Carolina) blurted

out the words, “You Lie!”

Reportedly, the 62-year-old Senator

apologized last Wednesday. However,

Wilson’s shocking disrespect for the

office of the president was

unprecedented.John McCain called it

"disrespectful" and demanded an

apology. North Dakota Rep. Earl

Pomeroy states "I've never seen anything

like it before. We do not invite the

President of the United States into the

House of Representatives and hurl

insults." “A lot of these outbursts have to

do with delegitimizing him as a

president,” said Congressman

Jim Clyburn, a senior member of

the South Carolina delegation.

The comments only fueled

allegations of an undercurrent of

disrespect among many in

Washington due to racism.

IN OTHER NEWS...According to ABC News,

on August 16th, Pastor Steven L.

Anderson of the Faithful Word

Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona

delivered a sermon titled "Why I Hate

Barack Obama." In the sermon, he said

he hates President Obama and is praying

for him to die.

He stated, “"If you want to know how

I'd like to see Obama die, I'd like him to

die of natural causes," said Anderson. "I

don't want him to be a martyr, we don't

need another holiday. I'd like to see him

die, like Ted Kennedy, of brain cancer."

In an interview this past Friday, Pastor

Anderson said he and his congregation

have received death threats after the

controversial sermon.

As a result, the congregants have

resorted to bringing guns to church.

"Guns are a great deterrent," said

Anderson. "We haven't had any violence

because people know if they come down

here swinging a baseball bat, we're ready

to protect ourselves." gt

National Baptist ConventionElects Dr. Julius Scruggs

After a week of highs

and lows, the results of the

election for the presidency

of the National Baptist

Convention determined the

Dr. Julius Scruggs

(Huntsville, AL) will take

the helm of the

organization.

Dr. Henry Lyons

attempted to block the vote

by filing a court injunction

on Tuesday of last week, however, on the

following day a judge ruled that the vote

could still proceed.

One question many are asking is

whether the NBC (and other historic

baptist organizations) are still relevant.

Here are some reader comments on that

subject:

I attended the Nat'l Bapt Conv USA Inc

in Memphis. Yes, I believe my convention

is still relevant. This was an election year,

somewhat unlike any I've seen before. I

am pleased with the outcome. I believe the

baptists of my convention charted a new

course under the last administration and it

is my prayer the conv will continue on to

greater heights in Christ Jesus!

Cassandra Kidd

I do not believe that the conventions are

relevant any longer, only because the

Baptist Church, for the

most part, is not relevant to

the community any longer.

The conventions have

become like the democrat

and republican

conventions; politically

and financially driven. I

grew up attending this

conventions due to the fact

that my mother and

grandmother held positions

within the church, but I never felt as

though the conventions had any spiritual

or community-edifying purpose,

especially when the economic

requirements to attend exclude a

significant amount of the common church

population.

Ethiopian Epiphany

The Baptist conventions were

originally conventions for pastors - it has

expanded throughout the years. The

Conventions do serve a purpose, but I

think programming needs to be more

progressive and meaningful for delegates.

Robert Earl Houston Sr.

You still have the diehard baptist, but

still many are wakin up to the way of

Holiness....without such....well i praise

God for the Full Gospel...
