∗ Thank you for the donations of used ink cartridges. To date, the church office has been able to save over $30 in office sup-plies at Staples. Letters - Thanks: Giving and Receiving

G r e e t i n g s t o G o v a n s Many thanks to all of you who sent prayers, cards, notes, and email greetings following my early summer heart attack. I had a heart catheterization with three s tents inser ted in the hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin. I left the hospital in two days and am back to my normal vacation routine and will be fully back to normal in the fall. It is wonderful to be part of a caring

family like Govans. Charles Forbes

Thanks to all those who helped with refreshments and the re-ception hour after the summer services. Marilyn Forbes

********************* Dear Friends, I suppose it goes without saying that along with change comes many uncertainties. When I came to Govans, there were many uncertainties, but I now realize my fears were in vain. I can also say that I did not expect to meet such a wonderful group of people with such welcoming spirits and warm hearts. But, it seems necessary for me to make yet another change. It is with great sadness that Sunday, August 27, will be my last Sunday serving you as your organist and choir director. As I begin my work as Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Pius X Church, I will hope to be the inspiration to them that you have been to me. Above all, I am grateful for each and everyone of you. In particular, I would like to offer my thanks to the staff, members of the congregation, and most importantly, the chan-cel choir. I ensure you of my continued thoughts and prayers, and I look forward to seeing you when the spirit permits! Sincerely, Bill Wisnom

September 2006 Everyone is busy getting ready for the first day of school! Teachers are cleaning and organizing their rooms, supplies are being purchased and Jimmy Love, our sexton, is waxing all of the floors. Everyone is eagerly awaiting Sep-tember 11th, our first day of school for the 2006-2007 school year. We will be welcoming back old friends and making new friends. There will be a New Par-ent Orientation on Wednesday, September 6th from 7-8 p.m. where new parents will be able to meet their children’s teachers. Cubby conferences will be held on Thursday, September 7th and Friday, September 8th. Several new teachers will be joining our staff this fall. Hiba Ali is from Su-dan and has recently received her 90-hour certificate in Early Childhood. Many of our families already know Hiba. She has been busy substituting this summer and working in our camp program. She has worked with all age groups this summer. Pam Butler, a Preschool parent, will be assisting Cara Shipley in the four-year-old classroom. Pam has a degree in Biology and Science Education from East Carolina University and has worked as a substitute teacher for the Balti-more County school system. She is the mother of Camden who is in our kinder-garten class and McKinley, who will be starting in the two-day twos’ class. Another parent joining our staff is Kate Walsh-Little. Kate will be working with the fours and kindergarten students this year presenting a peace and justice curriculum that she has developed. Kate is a master level teacher with a spe-cialty in reading. Theresa Giunta joined our staff in early June replacing Heather Holland as the lead teacher with the Busy Bees. Theresa has a degree from Towson Univer-sity in Family Studies and has come to us with much preschool experience in-cluding her most recent position at Valley Baptist Preschool. School pictures will be taken on Wednesday, September 27th and Thursday, September 28th. Back to School Night will be held on Wednesday, October 4th.

A. Recently a member of Govans asked me, “Why is it taking so long to find a new pastor?” The fact that he delivered this question a few minutes after listening to one of my sermons did not deter my quick response. “It’s because Govans has an excel-lent PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee). If your PNC was not as gifted and talented as it is, if your PNC was not as persistent and determined as it is, if your PNC would take less seriously its Christian responsibility to discern the best person available to become Govans’ next pastor, their work would be completed. Finding the best person suited by talent, temperament, and con-viction is difficult and takes time, for it employs a process designed to discern God’s will for this particular congregation of God’s people. Too often I have witnessed churches becoming impatient with the call process and their PNC. As a result, most of those churches who acted in haste have repented in extreme leisure.” B. The Govans’ PNC is excellent! Week after week they contribute long hours and earnest prayer to the special work you have entrusted to them. Bonnie Thomson and Paul Robie (co-chairs), Deborah Baer, Myra Brosius, Charles Forbes, Stephen Gaede, Julie McDill, Jane Page, and Colin Stine are, indeed, worthy of your confident trust and continued prayers of support and en-couragement. C. We rejoice that Govans’ former Professional Christian Educator, Dr. Ed Richardson, has begun his new “call” as Chaplain at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Maryland. Ed’s ministry will include both patients and staff. Each Sunday he will be leading an ecumenical service of worship. You can correspond with Ed at 526 Wind-wood Road, Baltimore, MD 21212. D. William Wisnom has resigned his part-time position as Organist and Choir Director to accept full-time employment with St. Pius X. Bill has been outstanding in his year with Govans. We wish him well in this new opportunity for Christian service. Phyllis Richards has resigned her part-time employment as housekeeper to accept full-time employment as a caregiver. Phyllis has been with us two years and will be missed greatly. Our prayers and appreciation are with both Phyllis and Bill. E. We shall resume our schedule of two services of worship on Sunday, September 10. The contemporary Family and Chil-dren’s Service will begin at 9:15 a.m. and the traditional worship service will begin at 11 a.m. I invite you to continue to uphold Govans Presbyterian Church in your prayers, affection, and affirmation. Grace and Peace, Roger Shoup, D.Min.

“Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”

Mission & Ministry

Facilities There have been many volunteers who have contributed to maintaining the property at Govans Presbyterian Church this summer. Several people have given hours of time to weed and trim the labyrinth. It has really started to fill out this summer. We have also trimmed trees and removed invasive vines. We have removed a dead tree and a number of shrubs that have not survived the dry summer heat. The front step to York House has been repaired. The labyrinth benches have been treated with a protective sealant to preserve them. Thanks to Drew Andersen, Andrea Cox, Chris D’Arezzo, Mike Field, Keith, Carol and Joe Hamilton, Jeremy North, Ted Kruse, Jer-emy North, Loren Western, Bonnie Thomson, Sylvia Usher, Bob Vickers, Wayne and Mary Beth White. Join us for a morning of fun, fellowship, and fresh air on Saturday, September 16. Laura Kittel

Congregational Care Committee

The Congregational Care Committee has learned that Mrs. Bea Pettit has been ill; please keep her in your prayers. Also, Mrs. Shirley Michael is recuperating from hospitalization, and hopes to be back at Govans soon. Robin Chandlee has graciously offered to explore the communion delivery program with Pastor Shoup. We continue to deliver flowers from church services to our shut-in friends. As our new year begins, we ask that any-one who wishes a home visitor for themselves, or to a loved one, please contact Mary Faith Ferretto at (410) 661-6720, or at [email protected]. Or, if anyone would like to be a friendly visitor, please call/e-mail also! It only takes a will-ing spirit and a small amount of time each month. Mary Faith Ferretto

Christian Education “Around the United States in Five Days” was the theme of this year's Vacation Bible School. We partnered with Roland Park Presbyterian Church and Reverend Terry Martin-Minnich to launch five mornings of travel, as we visited Flor-ida, Alaska, California, Illinois and Kentucky. For each state we learned about a mission project sponsored by a Presbyte-rian group. We collected change to support a camp near Tampa, Florida. Reverend Martin-Minnich and Reverend Shoup shared Bible stories, songs, and letters with the participants. We cre-ated banners for each church to use for their Rally Day cele-bration. We planted herbs to share with each family. We made

crafts to match the theme of water and boating and we con-sumed delicious snacks as well. We thank Govans’ volunteers Jennie Mauric, Becky Vickers, Elias Page, Joyce Kruse, Kelly Shay and Jane Page for their generous gift of time. We aver-aged 12-16 children, ages three to eleven, and we hope for more as we look forward to hosting VBS at Govans in 2007.

Summer Youth Trips Pine Ridge—Hou Kola Learning Camp

Abbie and I worked with other volunteers at the Hou Kola Learning Camp at the Makasan Presbyterian Church on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. This camp was for children from 3 to 13 years of age. The children were split into groups of about ten and moved though five work-shop areas for math, computers, arts and crafts, creative writing and reading. Each morning three van drivers and myself would go out into the com-munities to pick up between 40 to 75 children. While the van drivers were out, the group and workshop leaders were preparing the workstations. After the children arrived, the group leaders would take the groups through the cycle of stations until all the groups met in the Guild Hall for lunch. After lunch the vans returned the children back to their homes while the rest of the staff cleaned up. Also, on Tuesday and Thursday we also had a Baby Face program for expectant mothers and families of newborn children. The staff that wasn’t working in that program was hard at work mak-ing much-needed repairs to the church property. It was great experience working with the children and meeting the people of the community. I felt like we really were making a difference in their lives for the short time we were there. Also, I enjoyed meeting and working with many people from the Baltimore Presbytery.

******************** Nearly 50 folks from the Baltimore Presbytery journeyed to South Dakota this summer to help with the Hou Kola Summer Learning Camp. We sponsored three camps this year: a preschool and elementary camp at the Makasan Presbyterian Church, a teen camp at the Makasan site, and an elementary camp at the Pine Ridge Retreat Center adjacent to the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church. Between the three camps we reached over 120 youth and some parents as well. The camps included math, technology, puppet making, writing, and art. We sponsored a book nook where youth could select 6-10 books to keep. The Baby Faces program brought mothers and their young children to a program on early literacy where we were able to give each child a selection of board books, a doll or a teddy bear, dressed by volunteer workers in the Baltimore/Severna Park area. The Pine Ridge camp highlighted a science theme this year with hands-on learning activities. For our teens, this experience often is especially dramatic and even life changing. We meet people who have big hearts and strong spirits but little in the way of financial resources. We see beautiful but stark countryside and learn about the losses suffered by the Lakota people in the 1800's as settlers moved in and soldiers forced them off their traditional homelands. In addition to working with Lakota youth and their families, we visited Wounded Knee, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and Red Cloud School. Some youth were lucky enough to visit a cattle ranch, take an afternoon swim at Lake Angostura, or take in a movie in Chadron, Nebraska. Participants made amazing friends and deepened existing friendships during this outreach experience in South Dakota. Plans are underway for 2007 so if you have an interest, see Mary Welliver-Dillon or contact Chrystie Adams at Brown Memorial Park Ave. Presbyterian Church. Her email is [email protected]. Montreat Every summer for the past five years I have been attending the Montreat Youth Conference. The conference, held at Montreat College Campus in Black Mountain, N.C., is a place where hundreds of high school youth meet in faith. Montreat is a week of spiritual reflection and discussion. Every day, there is a keynote speaker, two “small group” meetings, planned recreation events, and a worship service. All of these events relate to the week’s theme, which was “Crossing Boundaries” this year. Each year also includes a musical guest in concert, and a variety show featuring par-ticipants. Paul Hobbs was selected to participate this year and played the piano. The week always ends with a very moving candlelight service around Lake Susan. The 2006 Govans’ contingent included Josey Ray, Paul Hobbs, Jeanette Hobbs, Chris Kurts, Caitlin Schneider, and myself. The adult leaders were Ben Hobbs, Julie McDill, and David Harris.

Fundraising Committee Report The Fundraising Committee met June 27 for a wrap-up and to look ahead before the summer break. At that time Jeananne Stine reported that the Brown family concert “Expressions of Love” brought a free will offering of $1,300 to the church, and the June 3 Youth Coffeehouse earned $150. We are very grateful for the wonderful contributions of time and talent by Edith Brown and her entire family, and the youth of Govans, for these two outstanding events. Many individuals have inquired about bringing additional donations for the next flea market. After much discussion the Committee has decided to do only one flea market per year, in the Spring. The next Great Govans’ Flea Market will occur next year, probably around Preakness weekend, as that seemed a good time. Until then we ask church members to hold things at home for us and please do not bring them to the church. The dungeon rapidly fills up and quickly runs out of room. We will begin soliciting donations again in March. The next meeting of the Fundraising Committee will oc-

cur on Tues., September 12, at the church at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend. At the next meeting, a schedule of fund-raising activities for the next 12 months will be discussed and approved. Among activities to be considered is the annual Christmas concert and silent auction. There is some sense that this event is no longer attracting the level of response that makes it worth continuing, and it might be time to try something new. Your thoughts, comments and suggestions are most welcome. Mike Field

Finance Committee - Govans Achieves New Balance

The Church has moved forward with fiscal improvements. The first six months, the church expenses exceeded income each month in the operating fund. The turn came in the month of June, expenses were over income by just $1100.00 July has seen the church with a virtual breakeven month despite a significant drop in congregational giving. This is the first time in the five-year history June and July have closed this well. The good news is due to many factors:

• Volunteers taking up the duties previously performed by staff • Staff examining ways to reduce expenses • Facilities finding new ways to cope with their many demands as well as volunteers taking on more tasks. Working on the

facilities tasks is a fun experience. Please consider answering the call to help on planned work days. Congratulations and thanks to everyone for their much appreciated effort!! Looking forward, the month of August seems to be another break-even month. Everyone on the staff has helped make this possible. The only question mark is the BGE bill. The amount could cause expenditure to exceed income. The BGE bill may be $3000 to $4000 which is difficult to manage. September marks the beginning of increased expenditures for the reminder of the year. If the congregation resumes giving at the budget level we can balance the expense with income. This pattern of control, giving and help from all will help the operating fund keep the deficit accumulated in the first six months from expanding. The result is up to all of us. It is dependent on volunteers con-tinuing to do tasks and congregational giving. The July financial report for all funds is available in the church office for your reference. Many difficult decisions were necessary to bring the church into fiscal balance. The outpouring of help from congregation and staff is very impressive. The finance committee thanks everyone for making it possible for the church to have a great second half of the year. Joe Hamilton

Govanstown Cemetery - Cemetery of the Govans Presbyterian Church

Recently I have had the opportunity to add my work to that of the others who have, in the past, been involved in keeping records of those interred in the Cemetery of the Govans Presbyterian Church. I have relied heavily on those others in preparing the present computerized list. The most complete source is the book, “Tombstone Inscriptions of Govans Presbyterian Church Cemetery,” infor-mation therein having been gathered in 1988 and 1989 and published in 1996. This book also contains a history of the Church and its Cemetery, a map of Govanstown as of 1877, and plats of the Church and Cemetery at their beginning. Earlier tombstone re-cording was done just prior to 1943 and was donated to the Maryland Historical Society at that time. Finally, James W. Jones, a Church member, spent many hours compiling an index from different sources; this was added to the 1996 tombstone book and thereby included in the computerized list. Two factors have made the work especially difficult. First, the fact that in about 1922 the old cemetery records were destroyed in a disastrous fire in the church manse. Second, the presence of several lists and the tombstones themselves, each of which contained its own minor errors, requiring me to make decisions as to the correct information, or on occasion, simply to note the differences. The church ledger itself seems to have been typed by a secretary who had to interpret and transcribe old, handwritten records, thereby adding more questions. In early 2005, church members gave of their time to type church ledger information onto computer discs. I then took those discs, corrected them and added information from the inscription book and the Jones list, so that now the listing is not just one of the names of the interred, but also of further information about them, such as birth dates and relationships (son, daughter, husband of, wife of). This list includes nine members of the Govane family, which gave its name to the Govanstown Cemetery in 1986. The list numbers 1,437 interred, of whom there are 24 who were born in the 18th century, the earliest birth date being that of Archibald Shaw who was born in 1753 and who died at age 92 years in 1845. The information is available free, on-line, by going to www.govanspres.org, and it is as complete as possible at present. If anyone notes any errors or omissions, they are invited, nay urged, to write me at 220 Melancthon Avenue, Lutherville, MD 21093. William A. Andersen, M.D.
