Three Significant Events - and their Costs

Greetings My Friends,

I realize that some of you are getting the Well Versed Newsletter for the firsttime, so allow me to make this very brief personal introduction. (And checkout www.WellVersedWorld.org )

BACKGROUND

I was born on a wheat and corn farm in North Central Kansas. I was raised in agodly home that discussed theology and politics (governmental issues)constantly, along with singing together.

On August 13, 1956, at age nine, a “governmental anointing” (a calling tospiritually impact government) came upon me – while watching the DemocraticNational Convention – although I did not know what to call it until manydecades later.

I had a passion for the governmental. At age five, I saw a president for the firsttime – fellow Kansan Dwight Eisenhower. At age nine, I was so moved when Isaw the scaffolding being built on the east side of the Capitol Building in DC,for the January 1957 Second Inauguration of President Eisenhower.

President Dwight Eisenhower Senator Frank Carlson

Four miles from our farmhouse was the farm of Senator Frank Carlson, whowas a close friend of President Eisenhower, and who partnered with him tolaunch the National Prayer Breakfast, to add “Under God” to the pledge, and tomake “In God We Trust” our National Motto. As a boy growing up, we were so

proud of our neighbor and his impact.

Jimmy Carter George W. Bush Donald Trump

While in graduate school, I attended the January 1977 Inauguration of JimmyCarter (although I had not voted for him). I was later thrilled to attend theJanuary 2005 Inaugural Events for George W. Bush, and then in January 2017the Inauguration of Donald Trump.

MOVING INTO ADULTHOOD

As a young man, I went to grad school, completing a number of degrees –including a Ph.D. in historical theology – on the East Coast.

My heart was in pastoring, so that is what I did for the next 49 years (Kansas,Kentucky, New Jersey, Oklahoma, all briefly – then 13 years in Texas, followedby 23 years in California) with a brief time teaching university. At one point inmy 30s, I thought I might run for office, but I sensed God say, “You are not torun for office, but you are to encourage those who do.” From that moment on,that is exactly what I did.

I have been involved with so many – it feels like hundreds of – candidates, assisting them spiritually as they ran for office, and encouraging them to thinkBiblically about public policy.

PERSONAL / FAMILY LIFE

In 1971, I was blessed to meet and marry Carol, an Oklahoma farm girl whograduated from the prestigious Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NewJersey near Princeton Theological Seminary where I graduated. We adoptedfour wonderful children. After a painful six-year battle with cancer, Carol died in2013. In 2014 I married Rosemary Schindler who had four wonderful children, and who has made 71 trips to Israel. Together we have eight grandsons andtwo granddaughters. We are deeply concerned what kind of a nation we areleaving for our children and grandchildren.

GOD’S WORD

In 2016, I read a survey that America’s laypersons stated that “we do not speakout on the issues, because we do not know what to say.” In that instant, Idecided to write a book to address this shortcoming. Well Versed, BiblicalAnswers to Today’s Tough Issues – one of 21 books I have authored – waswritten, and we have sold it at our hard cost – with no profit – from that day tillthis. It provides the Biblical foundations to 30 different political-governmental

issues. (See https://www.wellversedworld.org/product/well-versed/ )

At my core, I am not political. I am Biblical. The Bible is governmental. It is Godwho established government, and who establishes nations.

We all know that the Bible addresses (1) our personal lives, (2) our family livesand (3) our congregational (church) life. But few understand that the Bibleaddresses governmental life. However, it does. With great clarity.

THE ISSUE

To the extent that the government follows the principles of Scripture, to thatextent human pain, suffering and poverty is reduced.

To the extent that the government violates the principles of Scripture, to thatextent human pain, suffering and poverty increases.

WASHINGTON, DC

In July 2014, we partnered with a friend to launch weekly worship services inthe US Capitol Building. Weekly Christian worship and preaching services hadbeen held in the Capitol Building each Sunday from 1800 to 1869. Werestarted them…on Wednesday evenings. That morphed into a Well VersedBible Study (Biblical principles of governance) for Members of Congress.

In 2017, we began weekly Well Versed Bible Studies at the United Nations, initially led by former Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. (While in Congress, she had helped us launch our weekly worship services in the Capitol.)

The Knesset in Jerusalem, Israel

JERUSALEM

In 2017, my wife and I co-sponsored Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures) Bible studiesin the Knesset – the Israeli Parliament – in Jerusalem, led by Rabbi YehudaGlick and Rabbi Tuly Weisz.

GOVERNMENTAL CONTACT

Over the past four years, a small delegation of us have been privileged to meetwith 10 Heads of State (Presidents, Prime Ministers and a King), along withmany members of Parliaments or Congresses from Europe and Latin America.

One of the great joys was to serve on a faith leadership group under PresidentTrump.

But covid impacted everything. Some things came to a halt. Some things couldbe done by Zoom or by texts. Some could not.

THE RE-LAUNCH

But now – we are re-activating our ministry. The Well Versed ministry hasthree major events coming in the next few days, and I admit I am really excitedabout these!

Congressman Jody Hice

1) We are having a special dinner in Washington, DC for a wonderful group ofMembers of Congress who are passionate for truth. Our goal? To encouragethem during this dark season. They need encouragement! Our sponsor inCongress is Congressman Jody Hice.

2) We are hosting a special breakfast for Freshman Members of Congress, thatis, those who began their Congressional service just this past January. Wedesire to touch their lives and to encourage them to think Biblically regardingpublic policy issues.

Ambassador Luis Lamb

3) We are hosting an event for Ambassadors at the United Nations in NewYork City, once again, to encourage government influencers to see that God’sWord has the fundamental answers to the greatest issues of our day. Oursponsor for this event is Ambassador Luis Lam.

But please allow me to be candid. I need your help. May I ask for your help?

PRAYER NEEDED

Will you pray? Will you really pray for these three events? I so hope you will.We cannot make it without prayer. There is an intercession team that meets viaphone two hours every week – praying over Well Versed. Will you pray forGod’s blessing on these three events. Will you pray for the Members ofCongress and the Ambassadors at the United Nations?

PARTNERSHIP

Will you consider partnering with us financially? These three events are costly.

In the last nearly 100 or so newsletters, I can hardly recall of one where I havedirectly asked for your financial assistance. Perhaps I have, but I sure cannotrecall of one at this moment. But we really do need your help to “re-launch”Well Versed.

If you are already giving monthly, would you be able to give a little more thismonth? If you are not giving monthly, could you give this month?

ACTUAL COST

May I have permission to share with you our actual costs?

$240 would cover a hotel night for one of the six members of ourtraveling team. $2,200 would cover all our hotels costs. Can you partner with us and cover the cost for one of us?

$140 would cover a train ticket for one of us from Washington, DC toNew York City. $828 would pay for all of our train tickets. Can you partner with us and pay for one or more of us?

$500 would come close to paying for the airfare for one of our team. $4,000 would cover all our airfares.Would you consider partnering with us and pay the airfare for one of us…or all of us?

$85 would cover the cost of a dinner, tax and tip included, for a Memberof Congress. (It is extremely expensive to operate in Washington, DCand New York City.)$35 would cover the cost of a breakfast.$4,000 might come close to covering the food for our events. Let me ask you if you would pray about covering the cost of one Memberof Congress, or could you cover the whole cost?

CAN YOU HELP?

Regardless of whether you give a little amount – say $10 – or you give a large

Page 7: Governance Principles of Bringing Biblical...Glick and Rabbi Tuly Weisz. GOVERNMENTAL CONTACT Over the past four years, a small delegation of us have been privileged to meet with 10

amount – say $10,000 – we are immensely grateful.

WE ARE ONLY STEWARDS

For the record, we are careful stewards of what God provides. We believe anyfunds given do not belong to us. They belong to God. And we treat those fundsas good stewards, who are accountable to God.

Please allow me to say “Thank You” in advance to all of you who canfinancially partner with us on these three major events.

Bringing biblical principles of governance to government leaders…and to the people who elect them!
