Recognising Strong Governance

What is the Weekend About? In order to achieve strong governance, any Governing Body needs the right mix of skills and experience to function effectively as a collective. The Governing Body as a whole has the responsibility to lead an organisation, however, each individual member must fully understand their responsibilities as a Governing Body Member and contribute fully towards this function.

The Scottish Housing Regulator places a requirement on each Governing Body Member (GBM) to take part in an Appraisal Interview every year. Furthermore, from April 2015, after 9 years of service a GBM must take part in an additional assessment of their continued effectiveness before they can stand for re-election. Whilst these requirements may sound daunting, they should be viewed as an opportunity for every member of the Governing Body.

This weekend events aims to dispel any fears individuals may have regarding appraisals and to look more closely at the individual responsibilities of Governing Body Members. In February 2015 the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations will publish its “Appraisal Guidance for Governing Body Members” which will act as a “menu” of approaches for organisations to choose from and adapt to suit their needs.

As in previous years, this event will be highly interactive, with delegates undertaking practical groupwork and feeding back their views. Delegates will be given the opportunity to discuss such topics as:

• Appraisal• The 9-year Rule• Succession planning• Role descriptions for GBMs• The relationship between staff and GBM

About the VenueThe venue for the weekend will be the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, which is situated on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, about 3 miles south of Peebles.
