History & Development

Government College of Nursing Thiruvananthapuram is thepioneer institution of Nursing Education in Kerala, which preparesdifferent levels of professionals who are equipped to face allchallenges in the profession of nursing. This pioneer institution hasmany firsts in its credit. This is the first institution in the state to startBSc Nursing and MSc Nursing and is now a known PhD studycentre. The college caters to General nursing and midwifery students,graduates and post graduates in nursing, who are now successfulprofessionals in all parts of globe, bringing glory to their Alma Mater.

Milestones

1943 - Started School of Nursing attached to General Hospital,Thiruvananthapuram.

1954 - School of Nursing shifted to Medical College campus

1960 - Diploma programme in Teaching and Administration of11 months duration started at University level with an annualintake of 10 students.

1963 - School of Nursing upgraded to College of Nursing withthe starting of Post Basic B Sc. Nursing for diploma nurseswhich was the first of its kind in South East Asia.

1972 - Four year Degree Programme in Nursing (B Sc. Nursing)was started under Kerala University with an annual intakeof 25 students on merit basis

- The present college building was inaugurated on 12th April1972 by Dr. K. Balaraman Nair, the then Director of HealthServices.

1983 - Admission to B Sc. Nursing programme was made throughcommon Medical and Engineering Entrance Examinationof Kerala with 25 annual admissions, out of which 3 seatswere reserved for male candidates.

1987 - Started Post Graduation Programme in Nursing, (M Sc.Nursing) in Medical Surgical Nursing specialty with anannual intake of four students and selection was based onmerit.

1990 - M Sc. Nursing admission was made through EntranceExamination

1992 - B Sc. Nursing seat enhanced from 25 to 50 with 6 seatsfor boys

1996 - Post Graduation Programme in 3 more Nursing specialties(Child Health Nursing, Obstetrics & GynecologicalNursing & Community Health Nursing) started with 4students in each.

1998 - Manpower Empowerment in Trauma Care in co-operationwith Loma Linda University, USA was initiated.

- Started admission of male candidates to GNM Programmewith intake of 3 students.

1999 - Global Health Exchange Programme in Nursing withKarolinska Institute, Sweden started

2002 - Admission to B Sc. Nursing was made equal for boysand girls.

- Faculty Exchange Programme under Linnaeus Palme(LPE) started with Karolinska University, Sweden.

- Annual Intake of B Sc. Nursing Students was enhancedfrom 50 to 60.

- New syllabus for B Sc. Nursing programme implementedwith four year course and one year compulsory nursingservice.

2004 - GNM Programme - Male candidates’ seat was enhancedfrom 3 to 6.

2005 - College of Nursing was recognized as study centre forPhD in Nursing as part of National Consortium and IndianNursing Council.

- M Sc. Nursing seat enhanced from 16 to 28.

- New Syllabus for GNM programme (3 ½ years including6 months internship) implemented.

2006 - Faculty appointment made through Kerala PublicService Commission

- Two Faculty and Three M Sc. Nursing Students visitedKarolinska University, Stockholm, Sweden, as part ofLinnaeus Palme Programme.

- One crore rupees was sanctioned under PMSSY Schemefor construction of PG Block.

2008 - Annual intake of B Sc. Nursing Students was enhancedfrom 60 to 75.

- College of Nursing recognized as Research Centreunder University of Kerala.

2010 - Post Basic B Sc. Nursing Programme restarted (seats -30).

- B Sc. Nursing, Post Basic B Sc. Nursing & M Sc. Nursingprogramme affiliated to Kerala University of HealthSciences (KUHS).

2011 - One year Post Basic Diploma in Speciality Nursingprogramme started in four specialities, viz; Critical CareNursing, Oncology Nursing, Nurse Midwifery Practitionerand Emergency and Disaster Nursing.

2014 - A mutual recognition agreement (MRA) was madebetween Singapore Government and Government of Indiawhich recognized this college as an Institution of HigherLearning in Nursing Education along with three moreprestigious institutions in India.

2015 - Syllabus for GNM course was amended. Duration ofcourse was shortened to 3 years.

- Exchange programme in Nursing with West ChesterUniversity, Pennsylvania, USA, commenced.

 2016 - Revised syllabus for BSc Nursing (KUHS) implemented.

- Drawing and dispersing authority of the institution has beenvested up on to Senior Superintendent.

- Admission for students from Jammu & Kashmir startedunder Prime Ministers scholarship scheme.

Philosophy

Nursing is a profession with continuous growth andexpansion of knowledge. The faculty, College of Nursing believesthat nursing is a scientific problem solving process based on theholistic concept of health care, directed towards rendering qualitycare to the patients with commitment and compassion. Theprofessional nurse has a major role in the promotion of health,prevention of illness and rehabilitation of the individuals, families andcommunity. The qualified graduates of nursing programme areequipped with basic knowledge, beginning skill and right attitude tofunction as a care provider, educator and manager in a variety ofsettings. We also believe that the nursing education contributes tothe development of the student as an individual, citizen and aprospective member of the profession who will uphold the dignityof the profession

Administration

Govt. College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram is a full-fledged institution under the Directorate of Medical Education. ThePrincipal is the Administrative head of College of Nursing who isresponsible to the Director of Medical Education and Joint Directorof Nursing Education. The administration and internal managementof the college is vested on the Principal. The Principal is assisted bythe Vice Principal, Professors and the office staff in the administrationof college.

• The minimum educational requirement is the passing ofregular degree course in Nursing – (B Sc. Nursing / B Sc.(Hons). Nursing / Post Basic B Sc. Nursing), with minimumof 55% aggregate marks, in an institution which is recognizedby Indian Nursing Council.

• Minimum one year of experience after Basic B.Sc. Nursing.One year compulsory nursing service/internship aftersuccessful completion of four year B Sc. Nursing can beconsidered as experience.

• Minimum one year of experience prior or after regular PostBasic BSc. Nursing.

• Candidate should be medically fit.• The duration of course is 2 years.• Selection of candidates is based on the entrance examination

• Admission is given for 30 students annually.

3. General Nursing & Midwifery

• The minimum and maximum age for admission is 17 and 35years respectively. There is no age bar for ANM/LHV.

• Minimum education qualification:

• 10+2 class passed preferably Science (PCB) & Englishwith aggregate of 40% marks.

• 10+2 in Arts (Mathematics, Biotechnology, Economics,Political Science, History, Geography, Business Studies,

SBMR funded projects:

State Board of Medical Research is providing financialassistance for holding continuing medical education programmes,seminars, symposia and workshops on topics relevant to healthproblems of state. Grants are sanctioned to the faculty for paper/thesis presentation. A few faculty members are doing projects underSBMR fund.

National Consortium:

National Consortium for PhD Nursing or PhD consortiumhas been constituted by Indian Nursing Council in collaboration withRajiv Gandhi University, Karnataka, for the faculty of nursing topromote doctoral education. Government College of Nursing,Thiruvananthapuram, is a recognized research centre under INCNational Consortium. Video conferencing facilities are provided forPhD aspirants at the conference hall of this college.

Hostel

A separate hostel building is available for girls within thecampus and presently the male students are accommodated in men’shostel of Medical College. Male students of General Nursing &Midwifery course are presently accommodated at PIPMS hostel inthe Medical College campus.

Library

The college has its library with a collection of more than 9000books. It has 450 plus theses and 15 journals. The library providesXerox and internet services to students and faculty. Persons fromother institutions and colleges are permitted to use library, by payingRs.100 per day, provided they should bring credentials to provetheir identity.

Transportation

One 40 seater bus, one 32 seater bus and a Mahindra Xyloare available for transportation of students to clinical& communitypractice areas outside the campus.

Student Welfare Activities

Student guidance and support and support programme(SSGP)

SSGP has been initiated by KUHS for the purpose of givingguidance and counseling services for the students for theiracademic problems and learning needs, personal and socialissues, adolescent issues and health problems.

Health record for individual student is maintained which isdesigned to contain a summary of the student’s previous medicalhistory and a complete record of his/her health during the periodof study.

Guidance and counseling for students are provided by theteaching faculty. Personality development programmes areorganized from time to time. Co-curricular training programmesare conducted periodically.

Observation of various days of national importance, conductingeducation and cultural programmes and social awarenessprogrammes are activities done by the student bodies. Collegeday and other festivals such as Onam, Christmas etc. arecelebrated in the college to facilitate cultural and recreationalactivities.

Scholarships

1. Kumara Pillai Commission (KPCR) Scholarship is given toSEBC & Forward Caste students. SEBC & Forward Castecategory students whose parent’s annual income below Rs 2,00,000/- can also apply for the same scholarship. The details are availablein www.e-grantz.kerala.gov.in

2. Merit Cum Means Scholarship:

Post Metric Scholarship for SC/ST/OEC Students: Studentsbelonging to SC/ST/OEC communities are eligible for thisscholarship irrespective of annual income. Details can be accessedfrom the website www.e-grantz.kerala.govt.in

C H Muhammed Koya Scholarship: The Government of Keralaoffers scholarships to girl students belonging to the MuslimCommunity or Latin Catholic Community or Converted Christians(Scheduled Caste Velar Community), studying in Government/Government Aided Institutions for Under Graduate Programmes, inthe first year of the course. The scheme has Scholarships and HostelStipends. Applicant should have secured at least 50% marks in thequalifying Examination. The annual income of the family should bebelow Rs.2,50,000/-The details are available inwww.momascholarship.gov.in

3. KUHS Studentship scholarship is available for first yearstudents of undergraduate programes who have acquired admissionin government merit quota in university accredited institutions andhas annual income less than Rs. 50000/-.

4. E-grants is available for SC/ST/OEC students and foreconomically backward students who belong to forward community.

Students can avail only one scholarship at a time.

Stipend

Post Graduate students who have studied M Sc. Nursing inGovernment Nursing colleges and successfully completed the coursecan work as Junior Lecturer in Clinical Nursing, in any of theGovernment Nursing colleges for one year. They are eligible for aremuneration of Rs. 18,500 per month.

M Sc. Nursing students are eligible for stipend of Rs. 17,500per month during their study period on executing a bond to the effectthat they will serve the government for a period of one year after thesuccessful completion of the course.

Second year Post Basic Nursing students are eligible for astipend of Rs. 8000 per month

Post Basic Diploma in Speciality Nursing students are gettinga stipend of Rs. 7000 per month.

Award and Endowment

Awards are given by various professional organizations likeSNA & TNAI, Alumni Association, KGCNTA & KBNSA for Rankholders & for Best outgoing students. Gold Medal for the Ist rankholders of GNM, BSc. Nursing and M Sc. Nursing, Post BasicBSc. Nursing and Post Basic Diploma courses are offered by PTA.

Sree Nidhi Award is a cash award sponsored by 10th batch BSc.Nursing students of Government College of Nursing,Thiruvananthapuram, in memory of their class mate and former facultyof this college Mrs. Sree Nidhi.M. The award is given to the firstyear GNM student who scores highest mark for Psychology theoryexam in council examination.

COMMITTEES AND ASSOCIATIONS1. Standing Committees

The standing committees are constituted for the properfunctioning of the Academic and co-curricular activities. Thevarious standing committees functioning in the college are asfollows:

a. Curriculum CommitteeThe Committee undertakes the overall planning of all the activitiesof students of each year, which include theory classes, clinicalpostings, observation visits, sessional exams and co- curricularactivities. c. College Development CommitteeThis Committee aims at quality sustenance and coordinates andsupervises both academic and non-academic programmes. Principal is the Chairperson, professorsand all class teachers are the members of the committee.On admission, a signed declaration is obtained from all studentsregarding anti- ragging. Anti- ragging classes are given to allstudents by KELSA panel and officers of police departments.Signed anti – ragging declaration is also obtained from all studentseach year.Anti- Ragging squad is present in both college and hostel. Facultymembers are responsible for anti- ragging duty in college and inhostel. The anti- ragging duty is vested on assistant warden,housekeepers, hostel secretary, mess secretary and classrepresentatives.

7. Alumni Association

1. General Discipline:

• Working hours: The class and clinical hours are from 8 amto 5pm for all students except M Sc. Nursing students,whose duty hours are from 8am to 7-30 pm.

• Students are obliged to observe order and silence at all timesin the college especially during working hours.

• Students are forbidden to take part in political agitation againstthe college authority or the government. Students are prohibitedfrom organizing any meeting or entertainment at the college,or collecting money for any purpose within the college premise,without the permission of the college authority.

• Student found guilty of going over to other colleges to takepart in acts of indiscipline such as organizing demonstrationand strike would be deemed and would be punishedaccordingly.

• Students are forbidden to affix posters, display materialsand other articles on the walls of the college building and itspremise without prior permission.

• Mobile phones are prohibited in the college campus. Studentsshould wear identity card in the campus.

1. Rules related to Attendance, Leave or Absence:

• Students should be punctual for lectures, practical classesand clinical work.

• Students are expected to assemble in the classroom ‘5’minutes before the beginning of the class when the attendancewill be taken and absence of any students noted.

• No students shall be absent from class unless such absenceis satisfactorily explained. Leave application should besubmitted before availing the leave and should state clearlythe ground for the leave, number of days and the dates forwhich leave is required

• If for unavoidable circumstances, leave cannot be obtainedin advance, the reason should be explained at the earliestopportunity available.

2. Library rules

• Library will be kept open from 10 am to 5 pm on all workingdays.

• Library is for the use of students and staff of this college.

• Personal belongings and lab coats are not permitted insidethe library.

• PG students are eligible to take 3 books, BSc Nursing, PostBasic and Post Basic diploma students are allowed to take2 books and GNM students are permitted to take 1 bookat a time.

• Books are issued for the students for the period of 14 days.

• Fine of Rs 1 per day will be collected for returning of booksafter due date.

• Maintain silence inside the library.

• If any book is lost or damaged it should be replaced withthe latest edition or the cost of the damaged book will haveto be paid by the borrower.

3. Hostel Rules

Girls Hostel is under the control of Principal and managedby the Assistant Warden , who is assisted by a team consisting ofstudent representatives, housekeepers, cooks and cleaners.

• Inmates should keep their room clean the room doors; messhall etc. should not be disfigured by writing or stickingposters.

• Shouting, reading aloud and other such acts likely to causedisturbance to others should be avoided at all times.

• All members are expected to be in the hostel by 6 pm. Theyshould study and sleep in their own rooms only.

• Members are not allowed to remove any articles or furniture,fittings, lights etc.

• Any damage to the hostel property shall be immediatelyreported to the Assistant Warden. The cost of the damagewill be recovered from the individual who is responsible. Ifthe person could not be identified, the members of theconcerned room will be held responsible for the same.

• Members are not permitted to conduct meetings of any sortanywhere in the hostel or its premises without the AssistantWardens permission.

• There shall be an executive committee of inmates consistingof Principal, Assistant Warden, Hostel secretary, messsecretary and representatives of inmates. The executivecommittee shall meet once in every month. The general bodywill be conducted as and when necessary and should beattended by all inmates

• No member shall take active part in political meetings,processions, or propagandas. Violation of this rule will leadto immediate expulsion from the hostel

• Members are forbidden from ill treating or misbehaving withany of the hostel employees.

• Students should take permission from Assistant Warden forout pass and to go home.

• No students shall be absent from hostel for any night withoutobtaining the permission.

• Fine will be charged for untidy rooms.

• Day and night roll call register is maintained and housekeeperis authorized to take roll call. Inmates should physically reportfor roll call and sign in the register.

• All correspondence regarding the hostel should be madethrough the Assistant Warden

• Misconduct or breech of any of these rules will render theoffenders liable to fine, suspension or even dismissal fromthe hostel.

• Members are strictly advised not to leave money orvaluables in the rooms. Hostel authorities will not beresponsible for any loss.
