Foreword
In response to Letter no. 1/7/DIP/2015/MSME-DI dated 20/05/2016 of O/o DC
(MSME), M/o MSME, Govt. of India, the District Industrial Profiles of all 21 districts of
North Bihar under the jurisdiction of the MSME- Development Institute, Muzaffarpur
have been updated as per data available for latest years.
This report contains details of geographical information, topography, mineral and
forest resources, industrial scenario, social infrastructure, supporting institutions,
related statistical data and other information relating to MSME sector in the Siwan
district. The relevant data have been collected from various government agencies
and other institutional sources.
I take this opportunity to appreciate the efforts put in by our officer, Shri Avishek
Chanda, Assistant Director (E.I.) for updating the report.
I sincerely hope that this report will serve as a valuable guide to the entrepreneurs
and will also be useful to other stakeholders.

Brief Industrial Profile of Siwan District
1. General Characteristics of the District
The word „”Siwan” means the border in Bhojpuri. Currently it is not located as border
district of Bihar, India but formerly it was the southern border of Greater Nepal that‟s
why it is called „”Siwan”, The border. This district is well known for having the first Indian
President from the district, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, born in Jiradei.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area
Siwan is located at 25°58′-26°23‟North Latitude & 84°1′-84°47‟East Longitude. It has an
average elevation of 77 meters (253 feet). Siwan district came in existence in 1972,
surrounded by Saran district in East, Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh in the West,
Gopalganj district in North and in South Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh.
1.2 Topography
The land of Siwan district is alluvial in nature and the agriculture is the main activity of
the region and paddy, wheat and vegetables are grown in the district in larger area of
the land.

1.3 Climatic Conditions
The district has generally a humid climate except during summer which is rather dry.
The winter season starts from November to February and Summer Season from March
to May. The rainy season extends from June to September, October being the
transitional month. January is the coldest month when the mercury sometimes drops to
7-8°C. Dust storms and westerly wind usher in the hot weather in early April. May is the
hottest month when the maximum temperature reaches up to 38oC. The monsoon
season begins in the second half of June and lasts until September and maximum
annual rainfall falls during the monsoon season. With the cessation of rains the
temperature falls and the climate becomes rather pleasant. The district gets some
winter rains also.
1.4 Availability of Minerals:
This resource also is almost nil in this district. There are no minerals except nodular
Limestone (Kankar) of good quality which is found throughout the district. It is used for
metalling roads for ballast on the railways. Brick making has assumed importance in the
recent.
1.5 Forest:
The resources of forestry in this district are almost nil. Now the forest Department has
launched Social Forestry through afore station by the roads side canals, embankments
which shall yield result after some years and good progress in this direction has been
made.
1.6 Electricity and Power
The district receives its entire power supply from the Barauni Thermal Power Plant of
the Bihar State Electricity Board. There are no hydro-electric or thermal power stations
in the district. The industries that are run by power here have either their own electricity
plant or derive the power from the power generating station maintain by the
Government. There is one 132 K.V. grid power substation situated in this district whose

present capacity is 2x20 M.V.A. which is feeding power to both Siwan and Gopalganj
District. There are four power substation situated at Siwan. The district required about
17 MW power at peak load hours and 15 MW on average out of which the district is
getting 5-6 MW average per day. The Government has been paying full attention to
rural electrification and a large number of villages have been electrified. There are 993
electrified villages found in the rural area of the district.
1.7 Administrative set up
District Siwan has its headquarter at Siwan itself and it has 2 sub-division and 16 blocks
to look after the administration and all rounded development of 1530 revenue villages
as well the town agglomerations.

government.
