1.4. ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

For admission to any programme, the candidate should fulfill the necessary admission

requirements for the respective PG programmes, as prescribed by the Pondicherry University.

(ii) For converting the awarded CGPA into equivalent marks, the procedure prescribed

and indicated in the mark sheet by the degree awarding University will be followed.

(iii) In case, no such procedure has been prescribed, then the procedure laid down by

the Pondicherry University/CENTAC alone, will be followed.


1.5.1 PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING THE MERIT SCORE.

Selection of Candidates for admission to all the Degree courses will be based on the Merit list

prepared by CENTAC, based on the following methods:

Selection Procedure for PG Admission M.Tech. Programme


Generally, admission to M.Tech., programme/(s) is based on eligible GATE

score/percentile. Admission to remaining M.Tech (Non Gate) vacancies will be done based

on the qualifying degree marks.

(a) Puducherry State Candidates:

• Admission shall be based on GATE percentile. In case of a tie in the GATE score,

the aggregate marks of the qualifying examination (3rd semester to 8th

semester)/CGPA will be the criteria for selection.

• Vacancies arising in the seats allotted for GATE passed candidates will be filled up

by the Non- GATE candidates of Puducherry, failing which, by GATE passed

candidates from other states / other UTs, failing which, by Non-Gate Candidates from

other states / other UTs.

• The SC/ST vacancies of Puducherry quota will be filled by Non-GATE SC/ST

candidates of U.T. of Puducherry, failing which, by GATE passed SC /ST candidates

from Other States / other UTs.

(b) Other State Candidates:

• Admission shall be based on GATE percentile. In case of a tie in the GATE score,

the aggregate marks of the qualifying examination (3rd semester to 8th

semester)/CGPA will be the criteria for selection.

• Vacancies arising in seats allotted for GATE passed candidates from Other States /

other UTs will be filled up by non-GATE candidates from Other States/other UTs,

failing which, by the GATE/non-GATE candidates of Puducherry General (taken in

the order).

• The SC/ST vacancies of Other States / other UTs will be filled by SC/ST candidates

of U.T. of Puducherry with GATE score, failing which, by non-GATE SC/ST

candidates of U.T. of Puducherry.

(c) Sponsored Candidates:

• Sponsored candidates must have two years of full time work experience after

obtaining the prescribed minimum qualification for admission. Further, the work

experience should be from a registered firm# / company

# / Industry

# / Educational and

Research Institution / any Government Department / Government Autonomous

Organization, in the relevant field in which the admission is sought.

• A maximum of FIVE seats in each programme is earmarked for sponsored for

sponsored candidates.

• Sponsored candidates shall be treated as non-GATE candidates and (i) 40%

weightage of marks for experience (at the rate of 4% for each completed year of

experience excluding the first two years which is the minimum requirement, subject

to a maximum of 40%) and (ii) 60% weightage of marks shall be given for the

qualifying degree marks. The aggregate of marks obtained in (i) and (ii) stated above

shall be the criteria for selection.

• Vacancies arising in the seats allotted for sponsored category candidates will be filled

up by respective Pondicherry and other State category General candidates.


#The sponsoring firm / company / industry should be a member of CII / NSI / Builders

Association / any other recognized professional body at national/state level. The candidate

sponsored should be a confirmed employee.

Selection Procedure for PG Admission MCA / MBA/ M.Sc. in Materials Science &

Technology / M.Phil. in Physics (Material Science)

• Selection is based on the aggregate of marks obtained in the qualifying examinations

• Tie, if any, will be resolved by considering the aggregate marks/CGPA, in the

qualifying examinations.

• For candidates with engineering degree, aggregate marks/CGPA of the qualifying

examination, from 3rd

to 8th

semester will be considered.

• For all other candidates, aggregate marks/CGPA in Part-III of the qualifying

examination, will be considered.

Selection Procedure for PG Admission to M.V.Sc.

The selection of candidates to M.V.Sc. Degree Programme will be based both on marks

obtained in the B.V.Sc. examination and the PG Entrance Examination-2018 (PGEE-2018)

with equal weightage. The candidate shall secure a minimum of 50% in the entrance

examination to be eligible to get admission for M.V.Sc. Programme.

Merit list: Among the candidates who secured minimum of 50% of marks in the PGEE-

2018, the Merit List will be prepared based both on marks obtained in the B.V.Sc. & A.H.

examination and the PGEE-2018 with equal weightage. In case of a tie i.e. candidates having

obtained equal marks in the merit list, the inter- se merit will be decided in order of

preference as under:

Selection Procedure for PG Admission in Health Sciences

(i) M. Sc. (NURSING)

The selection of candidates will be based on the merit list drawn from the merit marks, giving

50% weightage to the aggregate marks obtained in the qualifying examination and 50%

weightage to the MTIET (PG)-18 entrance examination marks. The entrance examination

will be conducted by Mother Theresa Post Graduate & Research Institute of Health Sciences

(MTPG&RIHS), Gorimedu, Puducherry.

(ii) M. PHARM.

The selection of candidates shall be based on a valid GPAT-18 (All India Test)

percentile/score. In case of a tie in the GPAT score, the aggregate marks of the qualifying


examination will be the criteria for ranking. The GPAT candidates need not appear for the

MTIET (PG) entrance examination. The entrance examination will be conducted by Mother

Theresa Post Graduate & Research Institute of Health Sciences (MTPG&RIHS), Gorimedu,

Puducherry.

When GPAT-18 qualified candidates are not available, admission will be given to non-GPAT

candidates of respective category on merit. The selection of Non-GPAT candidates will be

based on the merit list drawn from the merit marks, giving 50% weightage to the aggregate

marks obtained in the qualifying examination and 50% weightage to the MTIET (PG)-18

entrance examination marks.

In case of grade points / CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks has to be furnished

from the concerned University only. If not, Pondicherry University CGPA conversion table

will be used for converting the grade points / CGPA to percentage marks. The speciality

selection will be by the choice of the candidates as per merit list. For GPAT Qualified

Candidates GPAT scholarship is not guaranteed by the institution.

(iii) M.P.T.

The selection of candidates will be based on the merit list drawn from the merit marks, giving

50% weightage to the aggregate marks obtained in the qualifying examination and 50%

weightage to the MTIET (PG)-18 entrance examination marks. The entrance examination

will be conducted by Mother Theresa Post Graduate & Research Institute of Health Sciences

(MTPG&RIHS), Gorimedu, Puducherry.

Selection Procedure for PG Admission to M.Sc. (Agri.) & M.Sc. (Horti.) in

PAJANCOARI, Karaikal.

Candidate who has undergone the course credit system with an OGPA of 3.25 out of

4.00 or 7.50 out of 10.00 or 75 percent aggregate alone is eligible to apply for various

Master’s degree programmes in this Institute. However, this will not apply to SC/ST

candidates/State Department nominees. Just a pass in the concerned degree is sufficient for

them.

Candidates seeking admission to the various Postgraduate degree courses are

permitted to apply for ONLY TWO SUBJECTS.

METHOD OF SELECTION:

i. Candidates shall be required to be present on the specified date for a written test at

their own expenses.

ii. The students will be ranked based on total marks scored by them in the categories

mentioned below:

iii. Written test with objective type (multiple choices) questions in the specific subject

40% (12 marks) is must for considering the candidate for admission.

iv. Candidates applied for two subjects should write the examination for both subjects

continuously for two hours.

v. All the original certificates for which attested copies have been enclosed with the

application must be produced for verification at the time of written test. Candidates

who fail to produce original certificates will not be allowed to write entrance test.

vi. Seats are reserved for candidates belonging to scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other

Backward Classes as per the norms of Government of Puducherry.

vii. Two seats of the total sanctioned strength, irrespective of the discipline, are reserved for

the in-service candidates of Department of Agriculture, Puducherry. Their selection

will be considered under General category in the respective discipline.

Admission procedure:

i. The admission is based on the merit category of the candidates and availability of

vacancies at the time of counseling.

ii. All admissions made are provisional and subject to the approval of the University.

Selection Procedure for PG Admission in Law

Candidates who have applied for the respective courses will be ranked on merit on the basis

of the marks obtained by them in the qualifying examination. Ranking will be made on the

basis of percentage of marks in aggregate of all subjects obtained by the candidates in the

qualifying examination.

Employed candidates and practicing advocates are not eligible to apply for the LL.M. course.

Admission to this programme is restricted to the

residents of the Union Territory of Puducherry.

However, eligible Non-Resident candidates will be

considered for admission in the absence of eligible

Resident candidates.

Candidates should have obtained 55% in the qualifying

examination in the concerned subject of the

Pondicherry University or of any other University,

recognised by Pondicherry University as equivalent

thereto.

Part-Time

(a) Teachers working in colleges affiliated to

Pondicherry University, and Departments of the

University (Minimum three years of continuous service

is required).

(b) Administrative/Scientific personnel employed by

the Government of Puducherry and posted in places

within the jurisdiction of Pondicherry University at the

time of their application (Minimum ten years of

continuous service is required).


(c) Teachers working in the Higher Secondary

Schools/Trained Graduate Teachers within the

jurisdiction of Pondicherry University (Minimum five

years of continuous service is required). They should

be teaching at the ‘PLUS 2’ level/High School level.

(d) Persons working in recognized Public Libraries

situated within the jurisdiction of Pondicherry

University (Minimum ten years of continuous service

is required).

Note: If necessary an entrance examination will be conducted as advised by the academic council.



2.5.1 Procedure for Determining Merit Score.

i. Only Part III marks (excluding internal assessment marks) in the end semester

examinations are considered for calculation of percentage of marks.

ii. Environmental studies is only an awareness papers and so it is excluded in the

calculation of percentage of marks.

Algorithm Merit list

Step 1: Calculate the Total Marks, TM = Sum (all the marks secured)

Step 2: Aggregate Marks , AM = TM – [ I.M + P1.M + P2.M + E. M ]

I.M = Internal Marks, P1.M = Part I Marks, P2.= Part II Marks,

E.M = Environment studies Marks

Step 3: Calculate the Average AM, AAM = AM / No. of papers in A.M

Step 4: Arrange AAM in descending order department wise

Step 5: Classify AAM according to reservation policy.

Step 6: Print the Merit List.

Step 7: Stop.

2.5.2 Order of Priority for Tie Break

In case of Tie, the following steps are to be adopted.

1. Total marks are to be compared.

2. In case, the total marks are also same, the dates of birth are to be compared.

2.5.3 Merit List

The merit list is prepared by combining 2.5.1 & 2.5.2.
