This Reserve Force regiment originated in Ottawa,Ontario on 7 June 1872, when the '1st BattalionGovernor General's Foot Guards' was authorized tobe formed.1 It was redesignated: 'GovernorGeneral's Foot Guards' on 16 September 1887;2

'The Governor General's Foot Guards' on1 April 1896;3 '2nd (Reserve) Battalion, TheGovernor General's Foot Guards' on7 November 1941;4 'The Governor General's FootGuards' on 31 January 1946;5 'The GovernorGeneral's Foot Guards (5th Battalion, The CanadianGuards)' on 1 September 1954;6 'GovernorGeneral's Foot Guards (5th Battalion, The CanadianGuards)' on 25 April 1958;7 and 'Governor General'sFoot Guards' on 1 September 1976.8

Notes:On 12 March 1920, the Governor General's Foot Guards wereorganized as a two battalion regiment with the 1st Battalion (noCEF designation) on the Non Permanent Active Militia order ofbattle, and the 2nd Battalion (77th Battalion, CEF) on theReserve order of battle (MO 59/20). The reserve unit wasdisbanded on 14 December 1936 (GO 3/37).

North West RebellionThe 1st Battalion Governor General's Foot Guardsmobilized one company for active service on10 April 1885.9 It served in the Battleford Column ofthe North West Field Force.10 The company wasremoved from active service on 24 July 1885.11

The Second World WarDetails from the regiment were called out on serviceon 26 August 1939 and then placed on activeservice on 1 September 1939, under thedesignation 'The Governor General's Foot Guards,CASF (Details)', for local protection duties.22 Thedetails called out on active service were disbandedon 31 December 1940.23

The regiment subsequently mobilized 'The GovernorGeneral's Foot Guards, CASF' for active service on24 May 1940.24 It was redesignated '1st Battalion,The Governor General's Foot Guards, CASF' on7 November 1940.25 On 26 January 1942, it wasconverted to armour and redesignated: '21stArmoured Regiment (The Governor General's FootGuards), CAC, CASF';26 and '21st ArmouredRegiment (The Governor General's Foot Guards),RCAC, CASF' on 2 August 1945.27 It embarked forGreat Britain on 23 September 1942.28 On24 July 1944, it landed in France as part of the 4thArmoured Brigade, 4th Canadian ArmouredDivision, and it continued to fight in North-WestEurope until the end of the war.29 The overseasregiment was disbanded on 31 January 1946.30
