Campingopportunities intheGovernorKnowlesStateForestincludefamilycamping,groupcamping,equestriancampingandbackpackcamping.
Family campingisavailableyear-roundattheSt. Croix Family Campground,whichhas30sitesanddrinkingwater,hikingandbikingopportunities.Electricalhookupsareavailableforanadditionalfeeatsomesites.Vaulttoiletsareprovidedforcampersandfirewoodisavailableforpurchase.Thecampgroundisnotplowedduringthewintermonths.Firstcome,firstservedsitesareavailable,asarereservablesites,whichmaybereservedthroughReserveAmerica(seecampingpermitsonbackpage).
Group CampingisavailableattheSioux Portage Group Campground.Drinkingwater,picnictables,afirering,trashcans,vaulttoiletsandhikingandbikingtrailsareavailableforcampers.ThesiteisaccessiblefromtheSt.CroixRiver(0.2mileuphillhike)orbyroad.Thisgroupcampsiteisprimarilyatent-onlyfacilityandcanaccommodateupto60campers.ReservationsareavailablethroughReserveAmerica.ContacttheStateForestHeadquartersforspecialpermissionforrecreationalvehicle/camperuseatthislocation.
EquestrianCampingandmorethan40milesofhorsetrailsareaccessiblefromtheTrade River EquestrianCampground.The40campingsitesprovidepicnictables,firerings,vaulttoiletsandhorsetieposts.Electricalhookupsareavailableforanadditionalfeeatsomesitesandfirewoodisavailableforpurchase.On-siteself-registrationoradvancedreservationsthoughReserveAmericaareavailableforcampers.Thecampgroundandtrailsareopenyear-round,butroadsarenotplowedduringthewintermonths.AWisconsinStateTrailPassisrequiredforriders16yearsandolder.TrailPassescanbeobtainedthroughself-registrationatthetrailheadorataWisconsinDepartmentofNaturalResourcesServiceCenter.Trade River Day Use Areaprovideson-sitetrailmaps,water,restrooms,horselinesandtrailpassself-registration.Aparkingareawithmapsisavailablealongthenorthernportionofthehorsetraillocatedon340thStreet.
Backpack Campingisavailableathike-incampsiteslocatedthroughouttheStateForest.Fireringsandpicnictablesareprovided.Drinkingwaterisnotprovidedatanyofthesecampsites,howevereachsiteislocatednearasmallstream(waterpurificationisrequiredpriortouse).There is no fee for these remotesites,butapermitisrequired.ContacttheStateForestHeadquartersatleasttwodayspriortooccupyingthesitetoobtainyourfreepermit.Besuretopackoutalllitterandcompletelyextinguishfiresbeforeleaving.

Camping Permits• Forreservationsduringthesummercamping
season,contactReserveAmericaanytimeat1-888-947-2757 or www.reserveamerica.com. Reservationscanbemadeupto48hourspriortoarrivalandnomorethan11monthsinadvance.
• Only onewheeledcampingunitisallowedpersite.Thereisnolimitonthenumberoftents,providedtheyfitwithintheperimeterofthecampsite.
• All campers must obtain a camping permit. Backpackcampersmustobtainafreepermitfromtheforestheadquartersatleasttwodayspriortocamping;permitscanbeobtainedbycallingtheofficeat715-463-2898.
• Maximumcampingdurationis14 days within any 21-day period.
• A non-family group may not exceed 6 persons. A“family”islimitedtoparent(s)anddependentchildrenandnotmorethantwoguests.
• Campingpermitsarevalidfrom3pmofthefirstdayto 3 pm of the last day.Checkouttimeis3pm.
• Electricalhookupsareavailableatsomesitesforanadditionalfee.Thefeeisthesamewhetheryouusetheamenityornot.
Campfires• Containfireswithinthemetalfireringprovided
ateachsite.Forthehealthofyourfellowcampersplease don’t burn trash.
• Don’tleaveyourfireunattendedandbesuretoextinguishitcompletelybeforeleavingyourcampsite.
• FirewoodisavailableforsaleattheSt.CroixFamilyCampgroundandtheTradeRiverEquestrianCampground.Toprotectourforest,firewoodmustbepurchasedwithin 10 milesofthecampground,DATCP-certifiedfirewoodorgatheringdeadanddownwoodonthestateforestisalsopermitted.Forthehealthoftheforest,do not cut live trees or brush.
• Charcoalandgasgrillsareallowed.Carefullydisposeofusedcharcoal.
Sanitary Facilities• Campgroundcampers: -Tomaintainsafedrinkingwater,don’t wash
dishes at the pump. -Sanitarydumpstationsarelocatednearthe
registrationbuildingsatboththeSt.CroixFamilyCampgroundandtheTradeRiverEquestrianCampground.
-Safedrinkingwaterisprovidedatallcampgrounds.
• Duringtraditionalcampingseasons,adumpsterislocatedattheSt.CroixFamilyCampgroundneartheregistrationbuildingforregisteredcampers.
Pets• Pets must be on a leashnolongerthan8feet
incampgroundsandotherdesignatedareas. Pleasecleanupafteryourpets.
Motor Vehicles• AllvehiclesintheTradeRiverEquestrianCamp-
groundandtheSt.CroixFamilyCampgroundmusthaveaWisconsinStateParksandForestadmissionstickerorpaytherequireddailyusefee.
• Nomorethantwo vehiclesmaybeparkedatthecampsite.Keepvehiclesongravelpads.
• Parkextravehiclesattheregistrationbuilding.
Noise• Atnotimemaythenoiseinyourcampsiteinterfere
withtheenjoymentofyourfellowcampers.Campersmayoperategeneratorsbetweenthehoursof7amto8pm.Permissiontooperategeneratorsmayberevokedifgeneratorsareexcessivelyloud.Pleaserespectyourfellowcampersandonlyusegeneratorswhennecessary.
