amazing building is ten years old already, there is an entire lower level that we are still hoping to raise funds to
complete.You can help us today!

A Message About Meals by Amy St. Onge, RN/Health Coordinator
As many of our participants and readers are aware, BPI follows the nutritional guidelines set forth by the Child and Adult Care Food Program when making breakfast, lunch and snacks. This is a USDA program based on the nutritional needs of adults.
Meals and snacks are prepared by our kitchen staff on-site and we
do our best to present the meals in a manner that will be pleasing in taste and appearance. We also enjoy serving our participants in a restaurant fashion so that the dining experience is relaxing and pleasant.
BPI serves almost 1000 lunches per month and nearly 500 snacks! As one can imagine, our kitchen staff members work very hard to serve so many meals and snacks! Balancing cost, nutrition, taste, presentation and special meal accommodations is a difficult task and we appreciate that people understand when we cannot provide special items for people based on personal preference. What we can accommodate are meal substitutions when there is a medical necessity scripted by the physician. For example, one may need an alternate item due to a known food allergy, medical intolerance, texture issue, or due to a cultural or religious belief.
With the above being said, I am asking for understanding when our staff may explain why a meal item cannot be accommodated due to preference. We understand that some people don’t enjoy foods such as mayonnaise or onions, but unfortunately, these products may be found in some of our dishes. We cannot make a separate dish using a product someone may bring in from home. We do offer a daily sandwich if the entrée is not something that is appealing to an individual. We ask that all
sandwich requests are in to the kitchen staff in by 11:00 for enough time for preparation. As always, one may choose to bring in their own bag lunch as well.
An accommodation which BPI will be eliminating is the “no dark greens”. This was an outdated concept when patients were prescribed the blood thinner Coumadin (Warfarin). Leafy greens and other foods high in Vitamin K were previously eliminated from diets. Current medical practices, however, have changed due to patients eliminating too many nutrient-rich foods. They became deficient in fiber, iron and vitamins. The idea behind this new concept is providing “consistency” rather than eliminating food items - even if that includes a dark veggie in a controlled portion 1-2 times per week.
We have also looked at the research involving Diabetic diets. Current medical practices also aim toward the concept of providing consistency in terms of carbohydrates. Our BPI meals and snacks will be prepared using the “consistent carb” rule. Therefore, all participants whether Diabetic (or not) can enjoy the same meal and dessert. Our Registered Dietician will continue to review our menus in advance to ensure our meals are low and consistent in the carbohydrate category. We do, however, need to serve whole grain breads and pastas to fulfill necessary vitamin and fiber components. It is one’s choice to decline a roll or piece of bread if you are working to reduce carbs for weight loss.
As we move forward in implementing our dietary changes, we appreciate that people will respect and accept them. We offer our thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding! If questions arise, you may contact Amy St.Onge, RN or our dietary staff.

Bennington Project Independence is celebrating its 40th year of providing comprehensive Adult Day Services to older persons, younger adults with disabilities and families throughout Bennington County, New York and Massachusetts.
Daily activities are tailored to meet the variety of needs and interests of the participants. BPI services include health and wellness, social, and an array of meaningful, fun, adult activities.
The works on display here are the result of our twice weekly art therapy “Open Art Studios.” Each artist works in the medium of their choice to explore creatively and to deepen their understanding of themselves and those around them. The motto of the artists while working in the studio is “I accept what I am doing – we are all unique in our own way.” This show is a celebration of each individual’s talent, time and expression poured into their artwork each week.
“Joyful Accomplishment” will be on display March 20-April 15th at the Bennington College Red Barn, East Gallery. There will be a reception on April 5, 2019, from 1-3 pm. Please stop by to celebrate the artists who put their time, effort and creativity into their artwork. For more information please call BPI at 802-442-8136.
