Greetings LaMissTenn District Key Clubbers,
Whether or not you sang the title of this page like I
hoped you would, I’m sure that you all are just as
excited for summer as I am! Summer is my favorite
season because it is filled with adventures and
memories made with family and friends.
I am humbled and honored to be your District
Governor this year. During the upcoming year, the
LaMissTenn District will strive to new heights as we
increase fundraising efforts for The Eliminate Project and
achieve new goals, such as providing more resources
for clubs via the district website and creating closely
knit divisions through service projects. As Key Clubbers,
we are saving and changing lives all through our
service; now that is incredible!
This newsletter contains updated information
regarding The Eliminate Project, helpful tips on service
during the summer, insight on your district board’s work,
and much more. I hope you all have a wonderful
summer! Yours in Service,
Tabitha Kearns

Kiwanis has partnered with UNICEF to eliminate maternal
and neonatal tetanus off of the face of the earth. U.S. $1.80
protects a mother and her future babies from this deadly disease.
Maternal and neonatal tetanus, MNT, kills one baby every
nine minutes. Once tetanus has spread throughout a baby’s
body, the baby experiences muscle rigidity, locked jaw, arched
spine, difficult breathing, and convulsions. Babies infected with
MNT experience pain from the slightest sound, light, and touch;
therefore, a mother helplessly watches her child die.
As of May 26, 2014, the Kiwanis-family Service Leadership
Programs have raised US$2,937,246.20 in total funds. This sum
equates to saving and protecting over 1.6 million women and
babies.
MNT has been eliminated from 34 countries, and 25
countries are still at risk. Madagascar, the Philippines, Cambodia,
and India are in the process of scheduling validation surveys.
These surveys determine if MNT can be considered eliminated
from a country. The Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC,
scheduled immunization rounds in April 2014. They aim to
immunize 2.2 million women. The DRC has been "adopted" by
Key Club International. There are currently 62 target districts in
the DRC that need to be eliminated from MNT.
Key Club International encourages each member to
donate at least $5.40 this year. If each member donates this
amount, we can reach the goal of eliminating MNT from the DRC
as well as eliminating it off of the face of the earth by 2015.
I encourage your club to have a fundraiser this summer to
support the project. I would enjoy hearing about your most
successful fundraiser. Please email me, and your club’s
fundraising idea could be in a later newsletter.

The Eliminate Project
Summer is a perfect opportunity to give back to your
community. During the next couple of months, you and
the members of your club can plan wonderful projects
that you may not have had the time to execute during
the school year. Volunteering at nursing homes and
vacation Bible schools are just two ways you can get
involved in your community. You can also have a car
wash or bake sale for The Eliminate Project. Just
remember that service does not stop during the
summer! Use your free time helping those around you
and showing them your Key Club spirit.

Sweet Service during Summertime
The district board recently met in Baton
Rouge for New Board Training. Lieutenant
governors were able to learn more about their
duties and expectations for the upcoming year.
Overall, it was a great weekend!
During the summer, the executive board will
be setting directives with committees to ensure
effective work throughout the year. The district
board and LaMissTenn Key Clubbers from various
clubs will be traveling to Anaheim, California, in
July for the 71st Annual Key Club International
Convention.

This space could feature your club!
Each month, an outstanding club
will be featured in this district
newsletter. If you would like your
club to be considered, please email
me stating your club’s outstanding
performance. You can also include
pictures if your advisor approves.
This space could also feature a
service project your club has done
that you would like to share with the
district.
One of the district board’s goals this
year is to improve our current district
website. If you have any suggestions,
please contact your lieutenant
governor. Your lieutenant governor will
relay your suggestions to the board.
We would like to make the website
