Dear Key Clubs of the Mighty New York District
Every day, the music and the arts play a
crucial role in our daily lives. Whether it be the
music coming from our headphones or a grand
orchestral performance, the music and arts can
touch us in the most subtle and powerful of ways.
This service year, as appointed by District
Governor Domenick Pesce, the Governor’s
Project ("Music and Art, Within our Hearts") calls
for all the New York District Key Clubs to step up
and promote this special initiative. You may be
wondering-how exactly should I contribute to this
cause? The answer is straightforward. Both
fundraising and community service count.
Along with the rest of the
Governor’s Project Committee, I have compiled a
comprehensive list of service project ideas and
organizations in this packet that are specifically
geared for this initiative. Perform holiday carols at
your local senior center! Host a battle of the bands
fundraiser at your school! You can even help out
with simple projects like making holiday cards and
decorations to donate to your local hospital.
Any effort, no matter how small or large,
counts! If you have any questions regarding
the project, do not hesitate to contact me
at [email protected]. Remember, without
your efforts, Key Club would never be able to reach
its ambitious goals and commitment to service
Yours in Spirit and Service,
Lt. Governor Emma Cheng
Why Music and Art?
Music and Art is academic. For some people, this is the primary reason for providing music lessons to their children. A recent study from the University of California found that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Second graders who were given music lessons scored 27% higher on proportional math and fractions tests than children who received no special instruction.
Music and Art is emotional. Music is an art form. We are emotional beings and every person requires an artistic outlet.
Music and Art is for life. Most people can’t play soccer or football at 70 or 80 years of age, but they can sing or they can play piano or some other instrument. Music is a gift you can give others that lasts a lifetime.

MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNORMESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNORMESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNORMESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR
Hey New York District Key Club! This is
Governor Domenick here to tell you about the
Governor’s Project for the 2011-2012 service year. The
Governor’s Project is a service based project each year,
focusing upon a specific category. This year we will be
performing a very unique type of project, not recently
done in the past. This year’s Governor's Project is called
“Music and Art Within our Hearts.” It simply
advocates and encourages the planning of service
projects or fundraising that somehow involves or
promotes the music and the arts. With the economy in
its current condition, and school administrators cutting
budgets left and right, students are beginning to lose
out on things such as music, arts, and even Key Clubs!
This is an opportune time to show your teachers,
parents, and administrators how much extracurr
mean to you as well as all of the good they accomplish.
