GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Information

What is GPRS?

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is the way in which information is sent in

small data “packages” across a mobile network, to handsets, PDAs and laptops, etc.

What is Mobile Internet?

Mobile Internet is the new name of Digicel’s WAP Portal. It has replaced the name

Digicel Vibes. This is a portal/gateway page for links to other WAP sites. This is the

only WAP page for which Digicel has content control.

Can you give me a WAP Site to …?

Various links are available on the Digicel Wap site (Cool Links), which includes

entertainment and business links.

In addition to the links available on the Mobile Internet Wap site, Digicel customer

care will only suggest search engines to users such as –

http://wap.google.com

http://www.google.com

http://wap.google.com/wml

http://wapall.com

WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) vs. WEB

Browsing via WAP allows access to “web like” sites that were designed to be viewed

on micro browsers e.g. those found on mobile phones.

These pages are usually associated with WAP somewhere in the address. Extensions

such as http://wap.XXXX.com, http://XXXXX.com/wap, or in some cases, without the

“wap” extension in the address.

WEB access allows users to view internet websites on the world wide web

(http://www. - sites with the following beginning).

GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will GPRS replace WAP? No, GPRS is not an alternative to WAP; it's simply a different way of accessing it. In

fact, GPRS makes WAP a more exciting experience, giving quicker and easier access.

What happens when I travel abroad?

GPRS Roaming is not currently available from Digicel.

Troubleshooting GPRS Settings

Settings have been sent numerous times to my phone why can’t I receive

them?

• Visit a Dealer Store for phone to be manually provisioned.

• Try using another SIM card inside the phone and resend settings.

• The GPRS GUI may be offline.

I have gotten my phone manually provisioned, but still can’t connect to the

internet, why is that happening?

• Setting incorrectly entered in phone. Take phone to dealers and have settings

re-installed.

• Ensure that SIM card is provisioned for GPRS.

Whenever I receive the GPRS settings it is stored directly in my text

message inbox. I cannot install the setting into my phone?

• The handset being used is not able to receive our OTA settings. Take phone

to Dealer to be manually provisioned.

• Example of phones where this happens: Panasonic GD 68, Motorola C333,

C332 etc.

Problem using Service

Why did I lose connection in the middle of a WAP session?

This can result from the following:

• Difficulties with connection to that particular site.

• Signal problem when connecting.

• Sites will time out after 2 hours. Refresh page to re-establish connection.

Please note that refreshing the page is still considered browsing hence the

customer will be charged for refreshing the page after a time-out.

Why can’t I connect to sites that I was able to connect to before?

• Advise subscribers that some WAP sites may have restrictions for specific user

groups. These sites are not managed by Digicel for restrictions to be

cancelled.

• Recommend alternate sites for viewing by the use of a search engine

o eg. wap.google.com

o eg. wapall.com

I have fixed dialling enabled on my phone. Why does that stop me from

accessing the internet on my phone?

• Once fixed dialling is enabled, the customer will not be able to make a ‘data’

call to connect to Digicel Live.

GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How can I check how many bytes or kilobytes I’ve used so far?

• This is ‘phone specific’ feature, so some phones will display the amount of

bytes or kilobytes you’ve received while browsing. Other phones do not come

with this function.

• Even if your handset does not support this function, some internet sites will

advise you of the number of bytes displayed on that internet page before

downloading begins.

• If this is still not available to you, the number of bytes received for each

internet session can be had from our Customer Care Contact Centre.

A customer is browsing and receives a call. The internet page then times

out or expires. Will he/she be charged for refreshing that page?

• Yes, they will be charged to refresh the page. Refreshing the page is similar to

loading, hence a charge is applicable.

• While on the call the service goes in an inactive state and there is no charge

applied.

• Once the internet page times out, the charging stops. Once you refresh the

page, your service becomes active again and and the charging is restarted

• Mobile internet allows you to get and make calls while connected. In fact,

except for charging, your connection to the mobile internet service will not be

disturbed while you are in call mode.

I haven’t activated my prepaid SIM, but I’m still able to browse the

internet? Should I be allowed to do this?

• Even though your SIM is not activated, you are only able to browse “charge-

free” pages. That is internet pages that do not incur a cost. For example,

Digicel’s website (www.digiceljamaica.com)

• Once you attempt to browse on a page that you should be paying for, that

internet page will not load as you have no available balance on your account.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Page 10 of 33 last updated: August 2004

GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• You will not be able to browse ‘chargeable’ pages until you have activated

your SIM.

• Your pre-set balance is not available for use until you activate the SIM by

dialing 122 or sending *122#

• In order to add credit as well, the phone must be activated by dialling 121 or

sending *122#

I’m a postpaid customer. Will I be using my bundled minutes when I

access Digicel Live?

No, you are not using your bundled minutes when you use Digicel Live.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)

What is Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)?

This is an additional feature of some handsets having the capability to send a

message to a recipient. This may be in the following message type - text, audio, still

picture and video. Users may send a combination or a specific message type to a

contact.

What is the maximum size of an MMS?

There is no maximum size for an MMS, each MMS is charged at $9.00 per message

GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GPRS Pricing

1. Charging for MMS (Picture Messaging)

• Sending an MMS = $9.00 per message (flat rate)

• Receiving an MMS = FREE

• Prices are the same for both post-paid & prepaid

customers

Points to Note

• The cost of sending an MMS will not vary even if the size and content of each

MMS is different.

• When a prepaid customer who has less than $10 on his account, is receiving

an MMS, he will also get an SMS stating “insufficient balance”. This is a

standard message, but does not stop the MMS from being received.

• The customer will not be charged for receiving the MMS despite receiving a

text about insufficient balance.

How does GPRS costs compare to sending and receiving data via GSM? GPRS works in a totally different way to other mobile services, so you also pay for the service in a different way. Instead of paying for the time you spend connected to the service, you pay for the amount of information you send or receive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Page 31 of 33 last updated: August 2004

GPRS FAQ Guide

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Charging for Wap Browsing

• Wap Browsing = 25¢ per Kb

• Web Browsing rates are applicable to both prepaid and post-paid customers

• Browsing may include but is not limited to the following:

i. Viewing content on the internet

ii. Downloading games

iii. Reading your horoscope

iv. Checking your email

• What is a Kb?

o Kb refers to a Kilobyte.

o A Kilobyte (the smaller measure is a byte) is how one measures the

amount of content that is displayed on your handset when you are

browsing the internet.

o The number of kilobytes that can be found on each internet page will vary

dependent on how much text, pictures, graphics and sound bytes are on

each page.

• How do I calculate what I will be charged when I browse on my

handset or laptop?

o The size of an internet page is displayed in bytes.

o It is advised that bytes should be converted to kilobytes (Kb) by using the

following formula

1024 bytes = 1Kb

1024 Kb = 1 Mb

o To convert bytes to kilobytes, divide the total number of bytes by 1024.

o Eg. Customer browsed the internet and received 5640 bytes of information

o 5640byets ÷ 1024 = 5.5 Kb

o 5.5kb x 25¢ = $1.37

These rates are on a sliding scale which indicates that the more you use the service,

the cheaper it becomes.

Here’s an example of how the sliding scale works:

This example demonstrates how much a customer would pay if he used 15 Mb for

the month.

Usage

From To

Web Browsing

Rates

Number of Mb customer has

received by browsing the Web

What customer

pays

0 Mb - 1 Mb $125.00 1 $125.00

1st Mb - 2nd Mb $100.00 1 $100.00

2nd Mb - 10th Mb $75.00 per Mb 8 $600.00

10th Mb - 25th Mb $37.50 per Mb 5 $187.5

TOTAL 15 Kb received $1012.50

He will pay:

$125 – for the first Mb

$100 – for the second Mb

$75 x 8 Mb = $600 for the next 8 Mb

$37.50 x 5 Mb = $187.50 for the last 5 Mb

Therefore in total, he would have paid $1012.50

NB. On the first day of the next month, his usage will be reset to 0 Mb
