Driver Behavior
Impact on Employee Safety, Productivity and Employer Liability• 1 Million people have died in motor
vehicle crashes in last 25 years• 35,000 deaths each year in the U.S.• Leading cause of on and off-the-job
unintentional deaths in the U.S.• Leading cause of death for people 5 to
24 years old
Additional Stats• 4 out of 5 accidents (80%) are attributed to
distracted drivers.• Texting while driving is about 6 times more
likely to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated
• People who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash
• Texting/reading emails takes a driver’s focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds – enough time… to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph
• Talking on a cell phone while driving can make a younger driver’s reaction time as slow as that of a 70-year-old
In the U.S.A.• 150,000,000 employee in U.S.• 250,000,000 registered vehicles in U.S.• 3 Trillion vehicle miles traveled in 2011• 5,400,000 police reported vehicle
crashes in 2009• $260,000,000,000 cost of crashes in
U.S.• $16,300 average non-injury cost
For Businesses• $60 Billion per year• On-the-job crashes cost employers more than
• $25,500 per crash• $128,000 per injury• $500,000 per fatality
• Legal theories of negligence:• ‘Respondeat Superior’ – employer is
responsible for the negligent acts of employees while they are acting in the scope of employment
• ‘Direct Negligence’ – employer is responsible for its own negligence in hiring, supervising, and entrusting a vehicle to an unqualified employee
The Ultimate Goal….• Creating a “Driver Safety conscious culture” in
the workplace• Implementing policies and procedures that
support safe driving behaviors• Increasing employee safety in the field• Reducing distracted driving among field
employees• Reducing or eliminating accidents and injuries
in the field
Implementing a workplace driver safety program can greatly reduce a companies exposure to injuries or death and help protect its bottom line.

Portable solution for companiesfleet 590 integrates a black box, cable and antenna with Garmin’s leading user interface. The 5.0" touch display is optimal for limiting driver interaction and makes it easy to see driving-related information at a glance. It also has a fleet-friendly design so you can easily transfer it from vehicle to vehicle. And because fleet 590 is portable and does not require a direct hard-wiring to the vehicle, professional installation costs or customer downtime is reduced or eliminated.

Proper Installation Recommendations
20
GPS Tracking Device should be securely mounted up and under the driver’s side dash near the steering column. Wiring should be connected directly to the Ignition Wiring harness and a good ground source.
The antenna provided is an external windshield mount. GPS Satellite signal strength is more important than Cellular side of GPS tracking. Upper right corner of windshield is most optimal and safest for placement.
The in-vehicle Buzzer should be securely mounted under the driver’s side dash near the center console or somewhere that will not obstruct the sound emitted.
1. 2.
3.
4. To thwart tampering with the installed system, Torque Seal (supplied) should be applied to all wiring connections including the SMC/SMA antenna connectors.
