GPS Project: Creating a
Cleaner Stockton Campus
Water Watch is one of the few environmental organizations on campus that conduct
campus clean ups. Because of this, our research was conducted to researchwhere this organization should hold the most campus clean ups and why.

Data Collection
GPS points were taken of individual trash cans, individual recycling cans, cans that
had one of each, and litter.
GPS polylines were taken of popular routes walked by Stockton students.
GPS polygons were taken of trash and recycling areas that contained numerous cans.

Data Collection
Data was collected at Richard Stockton College of
New Jersey.
These data were collected various times of day over a
two week period.
These data were noted so that the chance of
accidentally GPSing a point etc. more than oncewas limited.
Data was collected in WGS 84.

GIS Interpretation
These data were projected in WGS 84, then changed NAD 83 then to New Jersey
State Plane.
The areas of optimal campus clean-ups were noted and visually pointed out within themaps.
The individual days were combined into point, polyline, and polygon shapefiles and
wrote the metadata for these shapefiles.
We made a few different maps of the data.

GIS Interpretation
We also decided to look at the types of
trash or recycling cans as well as
the types of litter into different maps.
Because this data is useful to Water Watch, we printed a large poster for that
organization to keep in their records.
Lots of the trash cans were not full,
yet much of the litter accumulated
in specific areas. These areas
either lacked trash cans or had
some, but I suppose students
were too careless to throw awaytheir trash.

Results
Basically, the areas that need more campus clean-ups would be:
- Light Path
- Housing Areas
- Between Lake Fred and Housing
The Light Path has not trash cans on it. This could be discussed with Stockton to ask
for more trash and recycling cans in these areas.
The Housing Areas have the most recycling polygons and many trash cans. It wouldbe a good idea to advertise and education more in these areas about littering.
The Areas Between Lake Fred and Housing have minimal trash and recycling cans
due to the fact that these areas are within the forest. Perhaps there should be
more, but maybe not. I think, if there was more education, then this may change.

Further Implications
These data could be used for the following:- Show Water Watch where to conduct campus-clean ups
- Show Stockton where additional waste and recycling cans may be needed
- Show Stockton that there needs to be more education and possibly higher
penalties for students littering
If a future student conducts this experiment again these data could be use to:
- Show if Water Watch is making an impact on Stocktons environment
- Show Water Watch if they should target campus-clean ups elsewhere
- Show Stockton if there needs to be more education or more cans
