The Bareilly Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install Global Positioning System (GPS) devices on its garbage lifting vehicles to ensure that the vehicles follow their set routes.

With the installation of GPS in more than 200 vehicles, senior officials will be able to track their daily movement. Once GPS comes into place, we will be able to monitor the movement of vehicles," said municipal commissioner Sheeldhar Yadav.

"Whenever our vehicles leave to get any work done, they end up taking three days to finish a single day's work.

It not only delays completion of work but also leads to wastage of fuel.

Though municipal staff has initiated door-to-door garbage from each homes on cycle rickshaws, they transfer the waste to municipal corporation vehicles who dump the waste at the Bakarganj ground.

"However, few vehicles do not lift the garbage for final disposal and we had received similar complaints for others.

Though we are aware that few employees will raise objection to it as they will not be able to flout rules and will be forced to follow correct procedures after GPS devices are installed, we will still go ahead with it," said an official on the condition of anonymity.

As per BMC officials, a installation of GPS in one vehicle will be Rs 5,000.While a monthly GPS charge of Rs 300 is also to be paid.

According to the proposal, the concerned department will keep an eye on the movement of vehicles from their system. Senior officials will also be able to track movement through their mobile phones.
