PROGRAMS PROMOTING LEADERSHIP

New Member Committee GroupsThe Omicron Brothers are always striving to foster leadership in the Chapter. Early on, the new members of Class 109 had the great opportunity to get more involved in the Chapter by being a part of 12 different committees. These committees were created to help promote leadership as well as create a sense of unity among the candidate class. Some highlights from these committees include academic study sessions organized by the Academic Committee, the annual Phi Delta Chi Health Fair led by the Health Fair Committee, and over $7,500 fundraised by the St Jude's Committee. Brothers Involved: 47 out of 47

Board Leadership Retreat To welcome a new academic year, the Worthy and General Board of Omicron got together for a Leadership Retreat. The WVC and WCC, as well as a few other board members, shared their experiences at this year's Leader-Development Seminar, effectively, passing down important ideas and tools they learned in order to help with leading the Chapter for the upcoming year. One of our main goals during the Retreat was to create a sense of unity and understanding so that each and every Board member knew what was expected of them. Our Worthy Prelate, Rojena Riad, had a vast amount of activities planned which consisted of the human knot, a beach ball icebreaker, and an obstacle course to allow us to learn how to better work together as a team Brothers Involved: 14 out of 17

Expansion of Chapter CommitteesLed by the Worthy Vice Counselor, the Board’s goal this year was to find a way for more Brothers to be involved in the chapter. Their effort started by reimplementing the committees from previous years. With success, the Chapter now has seven committees that consist of the Executive, Financial, Membership, Social, Achievement Award, Alumni, and Professional Projects Committees. The WCC appoints one Brother to lead the Committee while the WVC oversees their monthly tasks and projects. Overall, the implementation of these Committees has proven to be a success, which can be seen in the greater number of events and projects being held by the Chapter. Examples of these include the fundraising week for St. Jude's held by the Financial Committee, the Mock Residency Interview for P4s held by the Alumni Committee, and the new fundraising events for St. Jude's held by the Professional Projects Committee. With the increase in Brother involvement in the Chapter, our Board has indeed seen the impact of new Brothers stepping up to the plate and acting as new Leaders for Phi Delta Chi. Brothers Involved: 83 P2/P3 Brothers out of 83 P2/P3 Brothers

The ASSP/Phi Lambda Sigma Mentorship Program aims to create and develop the student body at the USC School of Pharmacy through personalized coaching and mentoring. Brothers of Omicron find it extremely important to be engaged as mentors to the students at the School of Pharmacy. Mentees, who are generally P1 and P2 students, are paired with a P3 or P4 student mentor at the beginning of the school year based on similar interests in pharmacy fields and career goals. Throughout the year, PLS sends out discussion topics to help engage students in conversation about the field of pharmacy and the school curriculum. The mentorship serves as a great opportunity for Brothers to act as leaders on campus and also to expand their network. Brothers Involved as Mentors: 42 out of 100

PROGRAMS RECOGNIZING LEADERSHIP

Omicron Social Media Recognition Omicron's Webmasters, Historian, and Social Chairs all collaborated to recognize Brothers who are Leaders in Pharmacy by acknowledging their hard work and dedication in all social media platforms. Some of the recognized Brothers include P4 Brother Sandy On, newly elected P2 Brothers in various organizations, and Brothers who attended LDS. This truly allows other Brothers and the Chapter to be inspired and motivated to keep pushing on and being the best Leader that they can be! Leadership Award Every year, PDC’s Omicron Chapter recognizes an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership through their involvement and dedication to their profession as well as the Fraternity. This year, we honor the 2017-2018 Leadership Award to our Brother Stephen Wei. From the beginning of Class 109's candidacy process, it was evident that Stephen was well-admired by all - not just for his numerous accomplishments as a pharmacy student, but also for his giving nature and kindheartedness. Even with his busy schedule, Stephen put in the time and effort to hold review sessions for the P1's upcoming Non-Prescription Therapies exams, making sure the P1s were thoroughly prepared to do their best. He also constantly encouraged them to grow as leaders in pharmacy and wanted to provide them with as much help as he could give so that they had the tools and knowledge to succeed. His involvement and dedication to our Brothers makes him very deserving of this award. Although Stephen has since graduated pharmacy school and has moved forward to his residency, we will continue to spread his positive influence, generosity, and knowledge onto future generations.

Most Active Candidate of the Year AwardThis award is given to a candidate who goes above and beyond what is expected of them during the candidacy process. And this year, PDC’s Omicron Chapter proudly presents the Most Active Candidate of the Year Award to Charles Dela Roca. During the P1's candidacy process, Charles not only contributed his time and effort to his Brothers, but also opened up his home on numerous occasions to give everyone opportunities to strengthen their bonds and build lasting relationships. Additionally, in preparation for Kid’s Day, Charles was involved in choreographing the boys’ dance routine while making sure it was a fun experience for everyone participating. He is the glue to the P1's candidate process, and his role as PDC Omicron’s Social Chair couldn’t be more well-deserved. All in all, with his outgoing personality, fun spirit, and wholehearted dedication to and involvement within PDC, Charles was a no-brainer as our pick for Most Active Candidate of the Year.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Leader-Development Seminar

What is LDS? The abbreviation gets thrown around from brother to brother so much that not many know what it is. Some say it is a conference, a chance to socialize, or a networking event. I say it is an experience, an opportunity, a privilege, for self-improvement. LDS stands for Leader-Development Seminar, as Brother Ralph Saroyan would emphasize "leader" not ‘leadership," despite their similar yet distinct meanings. I learned that a leader is not necessarily someone who does the most work, has the most innovative ideas, or is even well respected. Those qualities certainly help individuals on their journey to become leaders, but they are unnecessary and insufficient. A leader should be able to critically think about his followers, understanding what their needs are as well as how to fulfill them by utilizing the strength of each individual in order to accomplish common goals. Although LDS was only a week-long, it opened more doors for me than I could have imagined. I strive to practice what I learned by leading by example as a Phi Delta Chi Brother, encouraging others to take the next step in their self-improvement journey. My newly learned skill also helps in other capacities. As a president of a student organization, I learned to identify the strengths and weaknesses of my team members, and more importantly, how to address them appropriately so that the whole team benefits from each individual's improvements. LDS 2018 enlightened me far beyond what happened in Virginia Beach. Without LDS, I would not have been able to attend another leader-development activity with the California Pharmacists Association, which taught me even more about myself and how to empower others. I highly recommend any brothers - newly initiated or otherwise - to attend LDS at least once to take control of their professional and personal development. - Tim Dang
