At the end of this week, we leave on our first-ever Holy Spirit Mission Trip — from Saturday, August 9 to Saturday, August 16 — to Jamaica. I am hoping that this will become an annual event. I’m guessing that some of this year’s participants will want to go again next year; so, we may have to go during two different weeks and/or a location other than Jamaica. Thanks, especially, to Deacon John and Katie Breeden who started this Mission Trip for us here at Holy Spirit.

For years, I used to go with teens and adults from Christ the King to Vicente Guerrero, in northern Baja California, Mexico. We had to stop those trips because of the dangers involved for travelers in that part of Mexico. However, those trips provided great experiences and memories for all involved: we truly learned to appreciate the blessings of the United States of America; at the same time, we realized that people are pretty much the same all over the world: all of us needing the very basics of life (food, water, shelter, clothing), but especially friendship and love. I’m sure that this trip to Jamaica — during which we will be working with some very severely handicapped children and adults — will also help us to see how we are all children of one God — all special, beautiful and unique. Thanks to so many of you parishioners who have supported us along the way: making money donations either directly or through some of our fundraisers or donations of supplies. When the twenty-three of us go, we will also be bringing with us “in spirit” hundreds of other Holy Spirit parishioners. I ask you to pray this prayer every day from August 2 to August 9 for the particular individuals listed in the calendar below the prayer.

O God, who would have all your children be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, we ask you to send forth, protect and bless (________________________________________name those listed below according to the day and date) and grant them with all confidence to preach the Word — by their speech and actions; that in Jamaica your Gospel may be heard and glorified, and that all may know you and Jesus Christ, your Son in union with the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Holy Spirit Mission Team 2014!

The time has finally arrived! 23 missionaries from Holy Spirit will depart next Saturday, August 9 at 6:00 am for Jamaica. Thank you for your incredibly generous support over the last few months of planning and fundraising! Because of you, we were able to cut the cost per missionary in half! Additionally, we are taking 23 Suitcases filled with critically needed supplies for the residents of Mustard Seed thanks to you. Please keep the following team members in your prayers next week:

Please pray for their safe travel and for the Holy Spirit to fill their hearts with love as they go out to be Christ’s hands and feet serving the poorest of the poor. We can’t wait to share our experiences with you when we return.

GO. BE. LOVE.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Thank you to all of those parents that have signed their children up for the atrium sessions already. We do have a few spots left open if you would like to enroll your child. We have had great response with parents and vol-unteers, our atrium is in the finishing stages, our first training for catechists will be August 8, 9 and 10. We hope to see all of you there who have signed up and if any others want to join us - we welcome you. We will be meeting in the upper room. Email for details. Just a thought: The brain’s task is to receive information coming from within us and the world around us, to work with it, and then give responses. It bears the char-acteristics of our “image and likeness” of God. What you offer your child in these early years is especially important because learning happens in a different way at this time. The mind of a child is like an absorbent sponge – 80% if what they will learn in their life is done from birth to the age of 6. Consider if this is the right road to start your child on… You may register in the office with Kathy McGee or if you have questions please call or email… Teresa Chisholm 702-292-2234 [email protected]

Edge Registration for 2014-2015 Year Edge is a Catholic middle school ministry aimed to present the truths of the Catholic faith in a

hands-on and relevant format. The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church’s mission to evangelize,

middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge.

At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh

graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders.

Edge is open to all those in middle school—even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge.

Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education.

Registration packets for 6th-8th Grade Registrations will are now available:

1. Pick up a registration pack in the parish office. 2. Email Louie for a registration pack, or

Religious Ed Program for Grades K-5

Class Schedule K-5th - April 2013 SUNDAYS at 11:15 AM @ Gorman H.S.

We are now taking registrations for the K-5 Religious Education

Program for 2014-2015

holyspiritreligiouseducation.blogspot.com Email: [email protected]

Dear Religious Education Families, Hello and welcome to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2014-15 Religious Education Program! As you are undoubtedly aware by now, our programs have undergone some significant changes from last year to this year, and we are pleased to be able to present and explain some of the highlights at this time: **All Religious Education classes are now held on SUNDAY mornings between the 10AM Mass and the soon-to-be-moved 12:30 PM Mass.** Classes will be held at Bishop Gorman High School (BGHS) starting at 11:15 AM and ending at 12:15 PM. The reasons for this change are numerous, including (1) ease of BGHS facility use on Sunday compared to weekday nights, (2) common weeknight schedule conflicts on the part of both families and teachers, (3) students who are tired after long days of school on weekdays, (4) the convenience of a single trip to BGHS for Mass and class as opposed to two trips per week, (5) traditional “Sunday School” association for families. Sacramental Preparation to be included in regular Sunday class. Although Sacramental Preparation remains a two-year program at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, no longer will students need to attend two separate classes during a Sacramental Year. Rather, students who are eligible to receive Sacraments (students must be baptized, in their second year of Religious Education and at-or-above Second Grade level) will be grouped together in grade-level preparation classes where they will learn both the regular Religious Education curriculum, as well as the Sacramental Preparation curriculum. Students who are not in Sacramental Preparation years will be grouped in classes with other students not preparing for Sacraments. Registration forms are available at Mass or in the parish office. There is a parent information form enclosed that has the class schedule for the year, as well as other important information.

My Dear Parishioners, On the weekend of August 10 the Diocese of Las Vegas will take up a collection to benefit our rural parishes. This collection is used to help sustain rural parishes that could not otherwise remain open. Many of these parishes are long distances from the next neighboring parish and serve populations that are small in numbers. These rural parishes may be very small communities in population, but the parishioners, are a beacon to their communities of their Catholic faith. It is not possible for these churches to meet the increasing financial bur-dens of upkeep of buildings, utilities and parish activi-ties. They depend on our generosity to assist them in their religious education programs and evangelization programs. Without this assistance, these missions and rural parishes would cease to be a Catholic presence in their communities. Our diocese is blessed to have Father John McShane who serves as Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Ely and its mission church, St. Michael’s, Father Rolando Rivera who serves as Administrator of St. John the Evangelist in Overton and Father Rey Salditos who serves as Administrator of St. Patrick’s in Tonopah. Our other rural parish communities; namely, Christ of the Desert in Armargosa , Holy Child in Caliente and St. Catherine of Siena in Sandy Valley rely on the as-sistance of a priest to celebrate Sacraments whenever possible as they do not have a priest in residence.

These priests travel great distances to bring Mass to the parishioners in these rural communities to which we are very grateful. I thank you for your generosity and assure you of my prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas
