Welcome

All worshipers are asked to help us be a friendly church by signing our Friendship Register. Look for the small blue book located near on the inside of each aisle.

Restrooms are located across the breezeway just inside the doors to our Grace Hall.

A cry room/nursery room for parents needing to quiet small children is located at the back of the chapel. The room is equipped with chairs and toys and offers audio of our services.

There is coffee located across the breezeway in the Grace Hall.

If you would like to know more about Grace - Yorba Linda, visit our website at www.gracelutheran.church. A membership class, a class that covers the basic teachings of the Bible and what it means to be a Christian, just began. Speak to Pastor Sievert for more information. OPENING HYMN Blessed are the Saints of God (#394)

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

L. God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. This response, a cry for God’s love, is one of the oldest in the Christian church. Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to rescue us from sin. A form of “Gloria” has been used in worship to echo the Christmas angel’s song since the 4th century.

L. God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

LORD, HAVE MERCY – Kyrie

L: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with

gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

L: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for

the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our

prayer, O Christ.

C: Christ, have mercy.

L. For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer

here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

L. Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us

in your tender care:

C: Amen.

L. The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of praise.

GLORY BE TO GOD ON HIGH Gloria in Excelsis

All Glory be to God on high! Your name, O Lord, we glorify; We praise you for your peace and grace, Your favor toward our fallen race. O Lamb of God, to you we pray. You take all human sin away. Have mercy, Lord; receive our prayer; from God’s right hand your mercy share. You, Christ, are holy – Lord alone; The Father’s glory you made known. We by your Spirit sing again: “All glory be to God!” Amen.

Be seated as Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to hear the one thing needful – God’s Word. The way of the kingdom of Christ is upside down … for the way of strength through weakness and humbleness.

PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray.

Lord God, you know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we

often stumble and fall. Strengthen us in body and mind, and bring us safely

through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

FIRST LESSON Micah 6:6-8

6 With what shall I come before the LORD

and bow down before the exalted God?

Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,

with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams,

with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?

Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,

the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the LORD require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with your God.

Blessed are they…

The path to

wisdom and

strength is not the

one the world takes

– but it is found in

Christ, so in him we

boast.

PSALM 1 (p.64)

SECOND LESSON 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”

Hymn of the Day Blest Are They

Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.

Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth. Blest are they who hunger and thirst, they shall have their fill. Refrain (all)

Page 7: GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH · 2020-01-18 · Turns Our Life Upside Down This morning we start a new sermon series based on the first part of the most famous sermon ever preached: Jesus’

Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs. Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God! Refrain (all) Blest are they who seek peace, they are the children of God. Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory of God is theirs. Refrain (all) Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of me. Rejoice and be glad, yours is the kingdom; shine for all to see.

Refrain.

SERMON LESSON Matthew 5:1-12

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them. He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. L. This is the Gospel of the Lord. C. Praise be to you, O Christ!

Visitors, we invite you to participate in this act of worship but please don’t feel obligated to give. God’s Word makes it clear that we are not to give under compulsion but out of love and thankfulness for God’s love for us.

Members and guests, please use this time to fill in the friendship register located in each pew.

Prayer requests are welcomed and encouraged. Please let our pastor know and he would be happy to include them.

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

This communion

song echoes the

song of the angels

in Isaiah 6.

THE SACRAMENT M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. In the past he spoke to us through the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, who is the radiance of his glory.

Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

394 Blessed Are the Saints of God – Back

1 Blessed are the saints of God; They are bought with Christ’s own blood.

They are ransomed from the grave; Life eternal they shall have.

With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.

2 They are justified by grace; They enjoy the Savior’s peace.

All their sins are washed away; They shall stand in God’s great day.

With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.

3 They are lights upon the earth, Children of a heav’nly birth.

One with God, with Jesus one, Glory is in them begun.

With them numbered may we be Here and in eternity.

315 Here, O My Lord, I See You Face to Face – Back

1 Here, O my Lord, I see you face to face;

Here would I touch and handle things unseen,

Here grasp with firmer hand eternal grace,

And all my weariness upon you lean.

2 This is the hour of banquet and of song;

Here is the heav’nly table spread anew.

Here let me feast and, feasting, still prolong

The brief bright hour of fellowship with you.

3 I have no help but yours nor do I need

Another arm but yours to lean upon.

It is enough, O Lord, enough indeed;

My strength is in your might, your might alone.

4 Mine is the sin but yours the righteousness;

Mine is the guilt but yours the cleansing blood.

Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace:

Your blood, your righteousness, O Lord, my God.

5 Too soon we rise; the vessels disappear.

The feast, though not the love, is past and gone.

The bread and wine remove, but you are here,

Nearer than ever, still my shield and sun.

6 Feast after feast thus comes and passes by,

Yet, passing, points to that glad feast above,

Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,

The Lamb’s great marriage feast of bliss and love.
