GRACE NOTES February 2014 First Corinthians 12 provides us with familiar words reminding us that we are the body of Christ and individually members of it. Which part of the body are you? Are you committed to the body, or just a part of it? Many have expounded on Paul’s analogy for generations so I trust that you understand the implications of our different roles contributing to the whole, the value & necessity of each of us, and how sometimes some parts step up to the plate when others may be weak. While we all have our roles in the body of Christ, we need always remember that it is Christ himself who is the head of the Church. As hands, feet, or other parts, it is important not to get so caught up in our own tasks that we lose sight of the bigger purpose of the body we are called to be part of. Our physical bodies for the most part are made up of permanent parts for the duration of our lives, yet it is not so with the church as an institution. That is one place where Paul’s analogy may not go far enough to aid us in times when members of the body depart. Last year our pastor of 12 years retired and we’ve managed to carry on. Joe Busby who contributed so much to the life of Grace Presbyterian Church over the years passed away as others have before him. As we embark on the journey of 2014, Owen & Judy Wingate are leaving to relocate in Jacksonville and JoAnn Schell will no longer be our Christian Education Coordinator. Do we love and value them all as part of the Body of Christ as manifested in our congregation? Of course! Yet we must understand that while a person cannot be replaced, the role that they served can always be handled by another – maybe not in the same exact way, and maybe it will require some adjustments, but their purpose in serving the body can be taken up by another. Transitions in the body are difficult for us when we falsely assume that all of the church body’s members are permanent and fail to understand that the only part that is permanent is the head, Jesus Christ. GRACE NOTES

February 2014

First Corinthians 12 provides us with familiar words reminding us that we are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

If we are focused on the head and the mission & ministry it calls us to, we will discover creative ways to adjust as members come and go, as much as we valued and relied upon them. I believe our body is healthy and we have the capacity to finds way to discover, equip, and empower new hands and feet to attend to every need that truly serves the mission & ministry of the kingdom.

Blessings,

Pastor Drew

Mutual Mission Housing Report

January 2014

This January the presbytery sent a team of 22 volunteers to Kingston, where they addressed several mission tasks (Dental work, facilities, and housing). Due to various factors, there were just two volunteers available to build the house that was planned Pastor Drew and his son-in-law Matt Sumner), and the recipients’ church provided one Jamaican worker to join them.

After worship on Sunday, a visit to the home site was arranged and up an overgrown path, behind a precarious wall fashioned from rusty sheets of tin, a tiny house sat next to a freshly poured 18’ x 25” concrete foundation. Upon it was a stack of 2x4’s and other building materials. There they met the recipients.

The Andersons are an elderly couple with a mentally handicapped son who were living in a small decaying house that has not had secure roofing since the last hurricane, allowing water to stream in every time it rained. Whenever Pastor Drew asked her to describe aspects of their living conditions she wept, and it was heartbreaking to hear her stories.

The housing team set out on a rainy Monday to begin work and on the way the sign of God’s promise, a glorious rainbow, seemed to be landing upon the sign at the edge of the Hope Flat Community where the home was to be constructed and their spirits were lifted.

Gathering at the site, Rev. Davidson of the King’s Gate United Church was asked to lead a prayer of consecration in between raindrops, then work commenced. By the end of the third day the walls were up but the roof was not started.

The 4th day our JEMM partners located 2 skilled workers to assist the team and the roof framing was up by the end of the day. Late Friday Rev Jermaine Gibson, JEMM director, led a moving prayer of thanksgiving and blessing and a secure, dry home was delivered to a grateful family just after dusk.

It is amazing what God can do with prayers, a pile of materials, and faithful servants – Thanks for the support of Grace Presbyterian Church and thanks be to God!

HELP NEEDED!!

We all love the beautiful flower bouquets in the sanctuary as well as the important fellowship time we have together after the service each week.

However, we are not seeing members signing up to provide flowers or to facilitate the fellowship. Fellowship only requires cookies, coffee and punch.

Please let us keep these important parts of our worship time at Grace. Sign up for flowers on the sign up sheet at the back of the sanctuary. Sign up for Fellowship in the fellowship hall. Or call Karen in the office 376-5654.

If you have any questions, ask any Church Elder or Pastor Drew.
