Inauguration MessagesHear some key messages from inauguration guests and Dr. Barnes at www. graceu.edu/inauguration

Dear Friends,

1

t is hard to believe it has been almost a year since I began my tenure at this biblically centered Christian institution of higher education. As you will see in the following pages, the historic and foundational mission of the University is as strong today as when the doors first opened. We

continue to embrace the mission to boldly share the Good News of the Gospel by training our students to be servant leaders in boardrooms, schools, hospitals, courtrooms, and ministries around the globe.

I am excited about the faculty-driven initiatives that are providing innovative ways to disciple students and provide ministry opportunities in a technologically centered era. The expansion of on-campus and online offerings is providing biblically centered Christian higher education to students from around the world interested in diverse fields.

Our students are passionate and growing in their relationship with Christ and want to reach their calling. Through a variety of programs, our students are gaining valuable experience. I hope you enjoy reading about the:

• Scholarship opportunities that are taking away barriers to a Grace education.

• Servant Leadership Training program where students learn and serve the community more than 14,000 hours each school year.

• Graduate School offering new master’s degree opportunities for teachers and counselors.

• Jobs as Mission team expanding ministry and outreach opportunities in China.

• Music Department ministering through music from Washington state to Nebraska to Asia.

• Athletic Department increasing its offerings so more student athletes have an opportunity for biblically centered Christian higher education.

• Newly hired, mission-focused faculty and staff who are committed to serving Christ through their roles.

As you learn more about our new initiatives and foundational programs, I ask that you continue to pray for and support our students, faculty and staff. Through your financial gifts and friendship we are raising up the next generation of servant leaders to spread the gospel on campus, in our community and throughout the world. Thank you for walking with us on our Christ-centered journey.

Yours for a biblically centered Christian higher education,

Inauguration WeekKicks Off New Era

T o celebrate the installation of Dr. David

Barnes as president of Grace University,

the campus and community enjoyed a

week of events where Dr. Barnes was able to

meet students, alumni, and supporters and share

his mission-focused vision for the University.

Dr. Burkholder Welcomes 11th PresidentIn honor of the inauguration of Dr. David Barnes, Dr. Jared Burkholder returned to campus to welcome the University’s eleventh president and continue his long-standing relationship with Grace. Dr. Burkholder has had the privilege of knowing all of the University’s presidents. He enjoys telling the story about how he was born in October 1943, just one month after Grace University was “born.” His father, Harold D. Burkholder, who later led Grace as vice president and president, was one of the 10 pastors and leaders who met at the Flatiron Hotel in Omaha to plan and develop what would become Grace University.

Dr. Burkholder ‘65 served as Director of Intercultural Studies, instructor in Bible, and Vice President for Student Services. The Jared T. Burkholder Conference on Global Engagement was named in recognition of Dr. Burkholder’s commitment to missions.

To hear Dr. Burkholder’s reflections on the role of a Grace University president, watch the inauguration festivities at www.graceu.edu/inauguration.

Come to a concert … enjoy a lunch with Dr. Barnes … see a musical … attend a missions conference … watch a game … We want to keep you up-to-date on campus activities, new programs, and enrichment opportunities. Follow Grace University on Twitter, Facebook and through e-mail updates.

New offerings in the College of Graduate Studies are opening doors for those wanting to begin or enhance their education careers.

Master of Arts in Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for those seeking initial Nebraska State Teaching Certification. It is an accelerated 16-month four-

semester program of study for students with a bachelor’s degree, who have never held a teaching certificate, and who want Nebraska Department of Education Certification. The accelerated program enables individuals already possessing a non-educational bachelor’s degree to begin an elementary or secondary education career focused on business, English, history, mathematics, music or social studies.

The MAT integrates classroom management techniques and technology skills with a strong biblical worldview. Students are prepared to serve locally and internationally in a Christ-honoring manner in public, private, or parochial school environments.

Master of Science in Education

The Master of Science in Education (MSEd) exists to develop servant leaders within the education profession through excellence in biblically integrated

instruction and student-focused service learning.

The MSEd is for teaching professionals who want to grow in their professional skills and knowledge. It is an accelerated 16-month four-semester degree for those who already possess (or have possessed) a teaching certificate. It is designed for professionals who want to further develop their teaching skills, study the latest research in curriculum and instruction, and earn a Nebraska ESL Endorsement.

Because of Grace University’s commitment to serving students and making Christian higher education more available locally, nationally

and internationally, the EXCEL degree completion program is expanding its campus and online offerings. As part of the expansion, James Santoro, associate professor of psychology at Grace University and a licensed clinical therapist, has been selected as the first full-time director of EXCEL. Jim has been a faculty member at Grace University since 2005, bringing a broad academic, military and counseling background as he served students and the community.

As the director of EXCEL, Jim will be responsible for program development, student recruitment and retention, staff recruitment, and student activities. He also will continue in his role as a faculty member.

Jim has a B.S. in computer information systems from The Ohio State University, M.S. in business management from the University of Northern

Colorado, and M.A. in Community Counseling and M.A. in Christian Ministry from Grace University. His education, U.S. Air Force career, and his subsequent business and teaching experience make Jim a valuable asset to Grace University.

Mental health practitioners are in high demand and the Graduate College has expanded its Counseling Department

to include a School Counseling Track. The State of Nebraska only allows certified teachers to become school counselors, and this track enables experienced teachers to enhance their career skills. As school counselors, Grace graduates have the opportunity to impact public and private school students in a new way. Graduates of the School Counseling Track receive a 52-credit Master of Arts degree in Counseling from a biblically integrative perspective with courses in counseling and biblical studies.

The Counseling Department has committed to seeking accreditation from the Council

for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The CACREP only grants accreditation to counseling programs that meet the highest educational standards. The faculty are engaging in a self-study process with hopes to complete the process in spring 2015. The faculty are excited and committed to this effort; we ask that you pray for success in planning and conducting such a tremendous effort.

Grace University is committed to equipping students in the counseling program to help hurting people from a Christ-centered perspective. The Counseling Department has an excellent reputation within the Omaha community for preparing students for practice in a variety of settings. Currently, graduates work in clinical settings including private practice, group settings, and at institutional facilities.

Master of Arts — School Counseling Track

Jim Santoro’s experience in the classroom and in management make him the ideal leader to expand the EXCEL adult degree completion program as it reaches more students on campus and online.

Mission Program Strengthened Through Theory and Practice

The Intercultural Studies department has the goal to produce cross-cultural competency in students so they can succeed in ministry, business, education, and

diplomatic efforts within other cultures. There is a three-pronged approach to reaching this goal as students learn:

• The theology of the cross-cultural reality.

• About culture, what it is, how it works and how different cultures interact.

• The practical skills needed for their career including how to work in church-based ministries, education (especially teaching English), business, community development, and psychology/counseling.

There is vital balance between the study of theory and gaining practical experience. Although cultures are reduced to neat and clearly defined models so they can be understood in the classroom, people and the cultures they create defy these oversimplifications in real life. The Intercultural Studies department gives students the basis to understand cross-cultural work, but then provides ongoing practical experiences so students discover how the theories fit into mission work.

To fulfill academic requirements, students are given opportunities to serve locally and abroad. The diversity of Omaha provides a wealth of opportunities to experience other cultures. One way students learn is by pairing up with an experienced mentor to learn how to navigate the reality of cross-cultural ministry and service. Students also spend a semester living, studying and working abroad. New opportunities are being explored in urban and rural locations in Latin America, Europe and India where students will study under professors from that culture and live fully immersed as members of that society.

The Intercultural Studies Department is led by Dr. Mike Schmidt ’87. Dr. Schmidt returned to Grace this year after almost two decades with Serving in Mission (SIM) in Niger. His educational background in missiology and his experience ministering to the Tuareg people brings a valuable addition to the mission emphasis of Grace.

The program leadership and outreach opportunities will further strengthen the mission focus of the Intercultural Studies department and enhance the network of alumni spreading the gospel around the globe.

Academics

During the annual Association of Biblical Higher Education Conference, faculty and student leaders take a break from workshops to visit the H.E.A.R.T. Institute where Grace University Intercultural Studies students learn the practical and technical skills needed for living in a developing country, before leaving for an international mission field.

Dr. Mike Schmidt’s experience in Africa is energizing the mission components of the Intercultural Studies program.

Students Enter Pre-law Track

Grace University is committed to preparing students for ministry in all fields including law. By providing a Pre-Law Track, Grace

graduates will have the life skills, biblical worldview, and educational background needed to succeed in law school and thrive in a legal career. Through studies of history, English, philosophy, Bible, business and communication, students will sharpen their critical thinking, research and writing skills. Students are encouraged to get a broad range of experiences and to take demanding courses in preparation for their ministry in the legal field. Through the Pre-Law Track, students will focus on analytic problem solving, critical reading, writing, oral communication and listening abilities, task organization and management skills, and Servant Leadership Training.

“Bring me my books,” the Apostle Paul implored Timothy. Students who share Paul’s passion for the printed page can

now major in English at Grace University.

Grace’s program is distinguished by its emphasis on biblical integration. Reading literary works with discerning eyes prepares students to be engaged world citizens equipped with a biblically based criteria for assessing the merit of literary works. The English faculty at Grace will fan the flames within those students who love stories by introducing them to new authors and books, which will provide them a lifetime of enjoyable and edifying reading.

The English major provides students the opportunity to read, study, and discuss literary works spanning the ages and the globe. Four new courses were created specifically for the program: Major Authors, Literary Periods, Literary Genres, and a senior capstone course, Topics in Literature. The program builds on a solid base of preexisting composition, creative writing, and literary courses. Those offerings have been supplemented by collaboration between departments. Teacher Education and English majors will enjoy the Children and

Adolescent Literature course. The EXCEL Survey of Religious Literature course was adapted for traditional undergraduates and the Literature of the Bible course has been revised for the English major.

The department’s faculty has a distinct teaching style and a diverse area of expertise that complement those of his or her colleagues. Students majoring in English at Grace will learn to sift wheat from chaff in a literary world where never more true is Solomon’s observation that of the making of books there is no end.

AthleticsAthletic Programs and Facilities Expand to Meet Demand

“The historic, purposeful mission of Grace University is behind every expansion decision that is prayerfully considered by our faculty, staff

and board of trustees,” said Dr. David Barnes, president of Grace University. “By giving Christian students and athletes greater opportunities to study in relevant academic programs, we are helping them reach God’s call on their life in today’s mission fields. The founders of this University recognized the need for biblically centered Christian higher education, and our resolve is as strong today.”

The plans include the addition of women’s soccer, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s track and field, and the addition of junior varsity teams, as well as the development of a soccer, baseball, and softball complex. Research is being done to assess the feasibility of other sports including wrestling, lacrosse, and shooting sports. The Grace University Royals expansion also is being done in preparation to join NAIA and to move to the NCCAA Division I level, which increases the level of competition and scholarship opportunities for student-athletes.

“We are expanding athletic programs so that student athletes can choose Grace University where they will get a biblically centered Christian education that will prepare them for their calling,” said Dr. Barnes. “The reality is that most students will choose an institution that has the athletic opportunity they are looking for.”

Director of Athletic Advancement Builds Enrollment

Thad Mott has returned to Grace University as director of athletic advancement.

In his role, Mott will oversee the expansion of athletic programs through recruitment of student athletes and as community liaison. Mott was formerly the athletic director and coached the men’s 2008 National Championship basketball team. His experience with athletics, student mentorship, leadership, and recruitment make him the ideal person for the vital role.

Grace University is in the first year of a three-year plan to expand the school’s athletic offerings and facilities.

Athletic Programs and Facilities Expand to Meet Demand

Former major league player and coach Thaddis Bosley, Jr.,

has joined the Grace University team to lead the expansion of its athletic programs.

“Thad Bosley’s leadership experience, vision, passion for growth and

development of young people, and communication ability has prepared him for leading our athletics to a new level of excellence,” said Dr. David Barnes, president of Grace University. “Our teams have a long history of performing well on and off the field. Thad will be able to move our students to the next level athletically, academically and spiritually.”

As the executive director for athletics and athletic development, Bosley will be spearheading Grace University’s athletic expansion plan and developing new programs and resources. Bosley has been a key architect in the recently announced athletic expansion, which is vital to reaching enrollment and revenue growth plans. Bosley has been serving as a consultant during the planning and implementation of the initial athletic program expansion, including new coach hires. As a Christian leader, he understands the unique mission of Grace University and is committed to raising up servant leaders. As Executive Director of Athletics and Athletic Development, Bosley will oversee and coordinate the direction and implementation of all athletic programs. He will work closely with the athletic department and coaches in the recruitment and athletic development of our student athletes. In addition, Bosley will serve as the head baseball coach.

“I am confident that we can develop top-ranked programs and continue the Grace University tradition,” said Bosley. “But my greatest desire

is to mentor young men and women and provide an environment of leadership, integrity and excellence.”

Bosley comes to Grace University with a strong professional and athletic background. He was a Major League Baseball player for 14 seasons, twice leading the league in pinch hits. He was the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers and the Oakland Athletics, where he coached two American League MVPs, and a runner-up Rookie of the Year, and was the hitting coach for the 2003 Team USA, qualifying Olympic Team. Bosley began his Christian coaching career at Bethany University before being asked to lead the development of the first baseball program at Arizona Christian University in 2010.

“The expansion of athletics is being guided by the historic, purposeful mission of Grace University,” said Dr. Barnes. “Our founders recognized the need for Christian higher education, and we want to provide greater opportunities for Christian student athletes to reach their calling.”

Off the field, Bosley is the owner and Managing Member of Kinnor Holdings, LLC, an investment company that facilitates the private placement of accredited investor funds in real estate investment, participation agreements, commodities, and hedge funds. Kinnor assists the Christian community in the restructuring and refinancing of its debt obligations. Bosley owned B & E Records, where he wrote and produced contemporary Christian music and R & B ballads, and provided venture capital for the start-up of Bellmark Records and the development of new artists. He has been an instructor of New Testament Survey for Jubilee Christian Center Bible College in San Jose, Calif. Bosley has earned Executive Certificates from Thunderbird School of Global Management and the Investment Banking Institute; attended Major League Baseball’s Executive Development Program; and studied at Bible Way Pentecostal School of Ministry.

Athletics

Coach Courtney Moore has been promoted to head

coach. Moore has had a long-time relationship as a player from 2005–2008 and as an assistant coach for two seasons. In the six seasons Coach Moore has been a part of Grace volleyball, the team has

competed at the national level five times to bring home two final four finishes, one national second place finish and one National Championship.

Coach Moore plans to continue the legacy of excellence and expects to see it demonstrated

by each player in her athletics, academics, and relationships. As a Christian, Coach Moore believes excellence is found when people accept their identity in Christ and allow “his power to be made perfect in weakness.” She focuses on leading her players to think rightly about God and about themselves. She believes this allows them to be their best on the court and also in life.

“Grace Volleyball seeks to be hard working and competitive on the court, without losing sight of the One who enables us to live and move and have our being,” said Coach Moore. “We train hard, practice hard and play hard because we love the game and we love each other, but ultimately ‘we press on to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus.’”

World Class Soccer Coach leads Women’s TeamMeet Coach Benning and learn about her philosophy at www.graceroyals.com/womenssoccer.shtml

World Cup soccer player and former Husker Tanya Franck Benning has been selected as the first head coach of the inaugural

women’s soccer team. Coach Benning has a strong collegiate and professional background, a heart for Christian mentoring, and a solid reputation in the metro soccer community. Her strengths include her solid tactical skills and her talent for developing the character of her players. These traits make her a compelling recruiter locally and nationally.

Benning, a native Canadian, had a successful career at University of Nebraska–Lincoln as a Husker midfielder. She was co-captain for the Huskers for three seasons and earned numerous honors for her defensive play from 1994–1997. As a biochemistry major and communication minor, she earned spots on the Big 8 and Big 12 Academic Honor Rolls. Following graduation, she played four years for the Canadian national team, playing in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She then played two years for the United Soccer League’s Toronto Infernos.

After returning to Nebraska, Benning served as an assistant coach at UNO in 1999–2000 and volunteered as an assistant coach at Creighton University in 2002–2003. She joined Arsenal Club as the head coach from 2003–2005. Following the merger into the Omaha Football Club (OFC), Benning served as the head coach for the top two girls’ teams for the Academy Division and currently is the assistant coach for OFC’s Youth Development League.

Off the field, Benning has worked for Calvary Chapel West Omaha as a ministry assistant where she has been responsible for mentoring and counseling women and youth, as well as planning community outreaches.

The Volleyball Team placed well at the opening Spikefest Tournament and won the NCCAA Central Region preseason tournament. They placed 4th in the Grace Classic, including a big win over Ozark Christian College. They headed into post-season play with a convincing win over Faith Baptist Bible College. The Royals lost to Manhattan Christian in the regional championship game. This season was Coach Angela Taulborg’s last as head coach of our volleyball team and she will be missed.

The Women’s Basketball Team started the season as the two-time defending champion of the NCCAA Central Region. In the opening weekend of the season, the Royals beat Emmaus Bible College and Northland International University. Midseason, the Lady Royals beat Ozark Christian and Calvary Bible College. They entered the Central Region Tournament as the number 3 seed. Despite putting up a great effort, the Lady Royals lost to Central Christian College of the Bible. They finished the season with a record of 13–11.

The Soccer Team finished with a record of 6–5–1. Their season included victories over St. Louis Christian and Emmaus Bible College. They also beat regional foes Central Bible College and Central Christian College of the Bible. A highlight of the season was Senior Night. The Royals played their last home game at Morrison Stadium (Creighton University). The Royals faced CBC at the regional tournament and came away with the victory. They faced Manhattan Christian in the finals, and despite a great effort they lost.

The Men’s Basketball Team knew they had a bull’s eye on their back. They were the defending NCCAA Central Region champion. During the season, they split head-to-head meetings with CBC. They also split with Faith Baptist Bible College. Against arch-rival Manhattan Christian, the Royals were 0–2 during the season. Defense of their title looked like a tall order. In the first round of post-season play, the Royals dispatched Central Bible College. That win set-up a rematch with MCC. Unlike the regular season, the Royals came out on top and earned a trip to the NCCAA national tournament. At nationals, the Royals finished 10th out of a 12-team field.

Royals Student Athletes Excel

The Royals teams had a successful year and are looking forward to the addition of new sports, athletes and coaches, together with the addition of athletic fields. Coaches have been working hard to

recruit new talent to compliment current student athletes already on campus.

“The addition of athletic programs and facilities allows us to serve more Christian students who want to continue playing sports in college,” said Dr. David Barnes, president.

MusicFestival of Christmas Supports Scholarships

The 2012 Festival of Christmas Scholarship Concert was enjoyed by more than 600 supporters of Grace University, which helped raise funds for student scholarships. The

evening began with a dinner in the Storz Fountain Court and was followed by the concert in the Witherspoon Concert Hall at the Joslyn Art Museum. Attendees enjoyed music from the Grace University Chorale, Concert Band, Women’s Choir, Chamber Singers and instrumental ensembles, along with our special guest, the Columbus High School Choir.

Funds raised from the concert support the Price Match Advantage, which eliminates the financial factor when students are choosing the best fit for their college experience. Through the Price Match Advantage, Grace matches “net” out-of-pocket cost as shown on the financial aid award letter from any four-year, regionally accredited, public or private college.

Performing for Sold-out CrowdsLittle Women the Broadway Musical produced by Dr. Greg Zielke, chairman of the Music Department, and directed by his daughter Mackenzie Dehmer, featured top performances from student singers and actors, as well as student and community musicians. Special performances were arranged for local Christian schools and homeschool groups.

Musicians Serve in China

The Grace University Band visited China for a two-week concert tour in May. More than 25 students and community

musicians toured key places in China and performed many concerts in Taiyuan schools. The main component of the trip was creating personal relationships with people. During previous trips in 2007 and in 2010, strong relationships were built and the team has seen the impact of continuing these friendships. Taiyuan does not attract tourists or business travelers. The Chinese people have been very interested in talking with musicians at great length. For many in Taiyuan, Grace musicians will be some of the few Americans they may ever encounter. This year, the musicians performed for more than 10,000 people.

11

During a concert at the No. 1 Foreign Language School in Taiyuan, 1000 guests packed the auditorium. Jeff James, associate professor of music who is leading the trip in China, made some new friends who enjoyed the concert.

“Teaching at Grace for the last 17 years has been one of the greatest honors in my

life,” said Dr. Dahlquist. “At times it all seemed like a dream. Imagine getting to teach the Bible, mentor hundreds of young students for the cause of Christ, and even get paid for doing it.”

After almost two decades of sacrificial service with his academic and theological expertise, Dr. Dahlquist is retiring and moving to Indiana to be closer to family. Thankfully for Grace and the students yet to be influenced by his teaching, Dr. Dahlquist will continue to serve as an adjunct through the EXCEL online program.

While difficult to quantify the impact of his ministry, perhaps an illustration of his impact on the University was his receiving the 2012 Honorary Alumni of the Year award that recognizes an individual for service, leadership, stewardship and influence on behalf of Grace. When Dr. Dahlquist arrived on campus, little did he know that God was going to use him to teach, advise and mentor more than 100 pastoral majors, countless EXCEL students, and numerous graduate students who would one day be scattered around the world serving Christ and His church in diverse ministries and professions. His impact on the Omaha community and his co-workers is immeasurable.

Dr. Dahlquist was hired by Dr. Jim Eckman, then Academic Dean, in fall of 1996, to lead the Pastoral Ministry Department and teach Bible.

“Because of Dick’s passion for God and for people, this was one of the best hires I ever made,” said Dr. Eckman, president emeritus.

Originally focused on teaching Old Testament, Dr. Dahlquist has taught a multitude of Bible courses and pastoral ministry classes to traditional undergraduates. In addition to these responsibilities,

he began adjunct teaching in EXCEL during the cohort system where students stayed together for the entire 15 month experience and had two instructors—one for Bible and one for their professional studies. And while he was serving as the EXCEL Bible instructor, he was asked to rewrite the entire EXCEL Bible curriculum. This material later was adapted for Graduate studies and Dr. Dahlquist led graduate students with no previous academic Bible background through a 12-hour intensive Accelerated Bible Core program.

In 2004, Dr. Dahlquist was named the part-time Director of EXCEL and served in that position until his retirement. In addition to directing the EXCEL program, he worked with

and mentored the EXCEL faculty. As the director, he rewrote the Bible material again to reflect the needs of today’s students, and he developed a new Christian Ministry program designed to serve adult students who work in churches, but have not finished their college degree.

From 1999 to 2007, he was involved in directing the Graduate College and was promoted to professor of Bible in 2002. During the last year, he has been working extensively to develop the EXCEL online program so students around the globe can receive a Grace education.

When not on campus, Dr. Dahlquist has been an active member of Harvey Oaks Baptist Church serving on the deacon board, education board, and pastoral search committee. In addition to teaching at Grace, he ministered to his congregation as an adult Sunday school teacher and gave sermons to fill in for the pastor in his absence.

“The glory all goes to God,” said Dr. Dick Dahlquist when reflecting on his successful ministry at Grace University.

Campus News

Grace University faculty have been sharing their knowledge and experience around the globe. Just a few things they have done include:

Dr. Rich Ramsey, Director of Christian Ministry Department, recently published an article in the Christian Education Journal titled “The Ministry of … Grading?” The article discusses the teacher in Christian higher education as a minister and the sometimes mundane chore of grading as an avenue to mentor students toward spiritual growth. Dr. Ramsey shared the research at North American Professors of Christian Education conference and used it at a professional development seminar at Association of Youth Ministry Educators conference.

Dr. Justin Brogan, Counseling Department Chair, and Ron Shope, Director of Assessment and Institutional Research, have published the article “Increasing Student Self-Efficacy Through Counselor Education Teaching Methods” in the American Counseling Association’s VISTAS. The article focuses on the education of future counselors and how teaching methods effect self-efficacy as an important component of counselor competency.

Dr. Justin Brogan has presented the talk “Suicide: The Fierce Goodbye.” This discussion helps participants understand that although suicide may seem like a distant threat, when someone one knows becomes a statistic, the fierce goodbye can tear one to the core. Dr. Brogan shares what to do when personal struggles turn suicidal and where God is when life doesn’t seem worth the effort.

Dr. Gary Nebeker, Professor of Theology, has written the paper “The Integration of Psychology and Christianity: A Position Paper.” To read the paper, go to blogs.graceuniversity.edu/thesecretspace/ and go to the “Word About Integration” page.

One of the newest is the “Secret Space.” This blog explores the subterranean geography of the heart to bring forth good treasures (Luke 6:45) and acquire “hearts of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12).

In his impassioned confession in Psalm 51:6, King David said to God, “Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” The ancients viewed the heart as the source of one’s thoughts, emotions, and choices, that “secret space,” the hidden part of the person not readily seen by others. Grace University is one arena, among many in life, where wisdom can be cultivated and spiritual transformation can happen.

As part of the annual Jared T. Burkholder Conference on Global Engagement, Todd Conkright, chairman of the Business

Department, organized a Business Beyond Business conference on campus for local business leaders to learn from Mark Weber from PovertyCure. PovertyCure is working to show the damaging effect of an aid-based approach to poverty alleviation.

As part of the University’s mission to raise up Christian business leaders, it is important for students and the community to be aware of the

spiritual needs in emerging markets. As part of a Jobs as Mission concept, it is important to educate students and professionals about how to be the most effective in ministering to various communities facing the challenges of poverty and a lack of resources.

Through well-intentioned aid, Christian organizations and churches have contributed to the erosion of local economies. Government-level aid from the West also has created a dependence on outside help for countries around the globe. During the Business-to-Business conference, Weber shared the importance of addressing poverty not only from our hearts, but also from our heads. He challenged attendees to consider the long-term impact the desire to help may have on those we hope to serve. The most effective means of assistance centers around job creation and economic development. In other words, the solution to poverty is trade, not aid.

Participants in the Business Beyond Business conference came from all education, business, community development, and government sectors. Grace students attended the keynote and Q&A sessions with Weber and many were moved by the eye-opening message that was presented.

Outreach

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Department coordinated a two-week mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Associate professor Dr. Troy Backhuus organized the trip for students and staff to assist Jim and Teri Riley who minister

to college students and plant churches. The Grace team worked with the Rileys at a youth camp and at their church. The main purpose for this trip was for Grace counseling students to gain experience through counseling local students and American missionaries in the area. The team also visited a mental institution and a rehabilitation center. This trip was exhausting but very much God honoring as Grace counseling students were able to serve in Honduras.

Since 2009, Grace University and the Friends of Asia have been working together to support and encourage the Asian community

in Omaha.

“We believe that the Lord will open the eyes of these communities, and Grace University will play a greater role in this reformation,” said Giri Mohanan, a 2010 graduate of Grace University and president of Friends of Asia. “We are thankful for Grace University’s love for our community and people.

Friends of Asia began meeting at Grace University during the India Independence Day Celebration in 2009. Since then, the organization has been organizing “game nights” for Asian families to

come and meet new people and have fun playing volleyball, indoor soccer and other family-oriented games at Grace.

“Our campus is open to minister to all people. We are excited that we can host such important events for our city’s international community,” said Dr. David Barnes, president of Grace University. “The work we do on campus is key preparation for our students who are being trained to impact the world for Christ.”

Friends of Asia also are helping expand athletic opportunities on campus. The organization held the first Indoor Cricket Tournament ever in Nebraska in 2010 at Grace University with eight teams. The tournament has grown the past two years and this year’s tournament hosted 22 teams from different parts of Nebraska. For the first time in the history of Nebraska cricket, a non-Asian cricket team played in the tournament. The Grace University Cricket Team was made up of students and staff, including the University president.

“This was a great opportunity for us to learn a new sport and be a part of an international community,” said Ryan Pramberg, student body president. “We are looking forward to the next tournament in the spring and are hopeful about our chances of placing as a top team.”

Art Festival Expands

The 8th annual Fine Arts Festival expanded to include Christian music and the work of students from Omaha Christian Academy. Members of the Grace family and OCA students shared their paintings,

drawings, sculptures, pottery, photographs, sketches, poetry, and short stories. The event was hosted by Jim Santoro, director of EXCEL, and his wife Elizabeth in conjunction with the Fine Arts Committee and Student Body Association.

Career Fair Serves Community

Career Services hosted its 8th Annual Career Fair to serve students and community members. This year’s fair was co-hosted by Salem Broadcasting’s KGBI radio station and featured 50 local businesses, schools and ministries.

Through collaboration with KGBI and media outreach efforts, the fair was the largest ever on campus and brought many people to campus to learn about Grace.

Study Abroad Furthers Goals

The JAM summer study abroad program in China has been expanded to serve students from majors other than teaching

and business who want to gain experience working internationally. Students teamed up with alumni and local organizations in China to provide hands-on service learning opportunities. The Grace students came from a record number of diverse majors and during the trip students completed an internship or practicum based on their major.

In Beijing, the team assisted alumni in the classroom and helped with a cultural fair at a large international school. Grace students also visited an orphanage and ministered to the children. Psychology students worked at a counseling center and the team visited ZDL, China’s largest Christian publishing company.

In Tiyuan, the team stayed at a technical university to interact with college students through English lessons and speak in various classes. Students also worked with Evergreen to learn about the social work field in China. In Xian, students visited a coffee entrepreneur who is using business to expand opportunities in China and has plans to open 50 new coffee shops in China in the next two years. Students interviewed the staff and owners and observed international business operations and strategies. Students served through English Corners in the coffee shop.

Although the name has changed, the mission and focus of the JAM program continues to be to raise up leaders who can use their profession to serve others. It is exciting to see the program’s strength and participation grow.

Married Student and Graduate Housing Increases Campus Capacity

Former faculty member Dr. Russ Jones who taught at Grace for almost 50 years has sold Grace his five-unit apartment building on the corner of 10th and William Streets. Dr. Jones provided a great opportunity

for Grace to expand the married student and graduate housing on campus, while acquiring the building below market value. The location also increases Grace University’s visibility on 10th Street, which is one of Omaha’s fastest growing corridors.

Judah Finds Home in Walkway

A new walkway connecting the campus features a beautiful water feature and bronze lion sculpture, based on the mascot Judah. The project was made possible from funding from the Sunderland Foundation and Bill

and Berniece Grewcock. The path was designed with seating areas along two 6-foot-wide paths with lighting and landscaping between. The water feature was designed by alumnus Byron Reimer, president of Pristine Water Gardens LLC, who is a licensed contractor and has done numerous landscape projects. The sculpture was created by Rev. Terry Tomlinson, an ordained United Methodist pastor.

Bringing Down the Barriers to a Christ-Centered Education

Because Grace University does not want price to to be an impediment when selecting a biblically centered education, the Price Match Advantage program is now available. Through the Price Match Advantage, Grace matches “net”

out-of-pocket cost as shown on the financial aid award letter for any four-year, regionally accredited, public or private school. The match amount is guaranteed for up to four years and matches academic scholarships.

Golf4GraceToday’s Leaders Supporting Scholarships for Tomorrow’s Leaders

After an exciting first year of growth and development, the Communication Studies department now encompass all the various

aspects of the communication discipline and has two concentrations: Interpersonal Communication and Mass Communication. Interpersonal Communication is a new program that focuses on developing students’ personal and professional communication skills. In the Mass Communication concentration, students work with the Iowa Western Community College’s co-op program to earn their degree in radio production, audio production, or electronic graphic communication. A minor in Interpersonal Communication also is being introduced.

New course offerings include conflict management, public relations, and small group communication. Non-communication majors are finding value in the courses as they develop their communication skills to complement their various areas of study. The Communication Studies program integrates a biblical worldview and furthers the mission of Grace by preparing all students to effectively communicate the gospel through a variety of channels to diverse people.

L.I.F.E. Chapel continues to be a key component of a Grace University education. Chapel meets four times a week for praise and worship, enrichment, and Bible study.
