Collected: 15 Years of Spring Fling

Spring Fling Open Studios celebrates its 15th year and Gracefield is delighted to showcase a selection of works purchased by visitors to this unique event over the years.

Join us as we showcase works by current and previous Spring Fling participants from private and public collections. This exhibition displays not only a broad example of Spring Fling artists, but also explores where works are now, how they have shaped people’s lives and homes, highlighting the special relationships built between artist and collector.

“I’ve built up my collection from scratch, mostly from studio visits, and am now the proud owner of paintings and ceramics that I enjoy every day”

“Helen has been a great champion of my work ever since my first Spring Fling. Her enthusiasm and encouragement through the years has been fantastic and she is now a great friend" - Clare Dawdry (Studio 41, p38)

Here at Gracefield we welcome back Gwen Adair (painting), Andrew Adair (ceramics) and Morgan Hardie (painting & prints) and newcomer, Emily Cooper (mixed media portraits).

Patricia Cain: Seeing Beyond the Immediate

Exploring the Scottish artist’s movement between representation and abstraction

Artist Patricia Cain curates both her own work and that of Scottish abstract artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham to create an installation that encourages visitors to engage with the creative process of artists who make both representational and abstract artworks.

Originated during a 3 month residency at Barns-Graham’s house ‘Balmungo’, Seeing Beyond the Immediate goes behind the aesthetic of artworks to focus on the artists’ process and decision-making and considers how this might be linked to the development of the artist herself.

The exhibition’s narrative reveals how Cain makes her work in relation to what she observes of the world and the work of others and it’s interactive content allows visitors to experience this for themselves.

Please join us for the opening of the exhibition with Jenny Wilson of the Barns Graham Trust on Saturday 20 May, 2-4pm.

Thursday 15 June: Seeing beyond the Immediate Symposium. Presented in association with Upland, the symposium considers the impact of creative process on the maker’s development with a specially invited international group of speakers. Full details will be available in early May - contact Gracefield on [email protected] if you’d like information sent directly, or visit our Facebook page.

PERFORMANCE EVENT

Saturday May 27 and Sunday 28 May 7.30pm

Joan Eardley A Private View

Heroica Theatre Company is set to stage its new play touring extensively to art gallery venues across the UK in 2017 including here at Gracefield Arts Centre for the Dumfries & Galloway Arts

Festival. Heroica – with the support and assistance of National Galleries Scotland and Stellar Quines Theatre Company, Edinburgh – is creating a new journey for artist Joan Eardley; one which follows her as she makes her way through a life of joys and frustrations, friendships and solitary stretches, disillusionments and disappointments – as well as passions and successes. This interactive promenade piece by Anna Carlisle - directed by Marilyn Imrie and starring Alexandra Mathie - will take you, quite literally, along with ‘Joan’ as she paints, ponders - and pursues her very unusual lifestyle. Meet her ‘children’, her friends and her lovers, hear the sounds of the streets and the Catterline coast and become a living part of her painting day.

Performed ‘in the round’ in the Gallery 2 space, the audience will get up close to the cast and enjoy the drama and immediacy of

the actors in a creative setting. Gracefield has a strong connection to Eardley with over 45 works held in its permanent collection, most gifted by Eardley’s friend Audrey Walker, who is a prominent character in the play. The production tour of Joan Eardley: A Private View comes to you through the generous support of Arts Council England, Creative Scotland and random arts giving.

Performance starts at 7.30 (approx. 1hr) and tickets are available via the Arts Festival or the Midsteeple £15/£12conc.

Due to the nature of the performance, places for this special event are limited in each show so early booking is recommended.

Running concurrently in Gallery 2, ‘Past and Present’ shows some of the work of the society key players and celebrates the importance of art created by individuals from all walks of life that continues to this day.

Past and Present - A Celebration of the Dumfries and Galloway Fine Arts Society

The exhibition highlights the Society’s members and organisers who led it from a small idea to a membership of over 260, with exhibitions, talks, demonstrations and workshops and encouragement of artistic endeavour for all ages and abilities at the heart of it all. The annual exhibition found a home at Gracefield when the building was opened in 1951 as a public art gallery as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations, and has been a regular feature of the summer programme ever since.

Over the years many artist and makers have shown their work and shared the wealth of talent from this creative corner of Scotland. The exhibition features at least one prominent past president or life-time member from each decade and works have

been drawn from the permanent collections held at Gracefield and the Stewartry Museums as well as private collections. A special feature of the exhibition will be the work of past president, Melville Brotherston, who celebrates his 75th birthday this year.

People of Dumfries and Galloway

The diversity of Dumfries and Galloway is reflected in the faces and stories of its people. Dumfries Camera Club was founded in 1947 and, as part of their Platinum Anniversary celebrations, Club members are photographing many hundreds of the Region’s residents and hearing a little about their lives, families, work and interests.

‘Doonhamers’ and newcomers, young and old, rich and homeless, well known faces and strangers; their portraits will be festooned around the galleries telling the story of who we are today.

ARTIST ROOMS: Don McCullin

Sir Don McCullin CBE (b.1935), one of the world's greatest photographers, has spent much of his long career working in conflict zones around the globe, including Vietnam, Cambodia and Northern Ireland. McCullin’s photographs document decades of war, mass emigration, famine and political upheaval, but are underscored by a powerful humanity, bringing us unbearably close to the experience of people living under conditions that we can barely imagine.

The works on show are drawn from the ARTIST ROOMS collection of modern and contemporary art, which is jointly owned by National Galleries of Scotland and Tate on behalf of the public, with additional works from Tate.

Since ARTIST ROOMS was established in 2008 by Anthony d’Offay, 40 million people have visited exhibitions of work from the collection in museums and galleries across the UK, and 600,000 young people have taken part in creative learning projects in their hometowns.

A programme of talks and events to accompany the show will be available in early August, contact the gallery for details, visit the website, or follow on Facebook/Twitter.

PRINT STUDIOGracefield also has a small printmakers workshop, with a large relief press and etching press. Ideal for non-toxic printmaking techniques and traditional relief printing. You can become a member to receive a great daily or hourly rate, or book as a non-member to use the studio on an ad hoc basis. As the studio does not have a print technician, some previous experience of printmaking is required to use the etching techniques, but you can also use the studio as a space to work. The studio should be booked by telephone and we never book more than 6 at any one time so there’s usually plenty of space. You will need to clear your space at the end of the day as we don’t have storage facilities.

If you’d like to view the space or pick up membership information please give us a call on 01387 262084.
