Introduction to the Unit of Inquiry
Artificial Intelligence is an approach which makes a machine to think and act like smart human beings.
This unit deals with the study of human brain about how it learn, decide and work, before it tries to solve
problems. The aim of AI is to improve computer functions which are related to human knowledge like
reasoning, learning, and problem-solving by understanding of human behaviors.
The Artificial Intelligence is now all around us. It is currently working with a variety of subfields, ranging
from general to specific, such as self-driving cars, playing chess, proving theorems, playing music, Painting,
etc.

Historical Context
If you investigate the background of Artificial Intelligence, you will find that it is not a new word and not
a new technology for researchers. This technology is much older than you would imagine. Even there are
the myths of Mechanical men in Ancient Greek and Egyptian Myths. Following are some milestones in the
history of AI which defines the journey from the AI generation to till date development.
Linkages to other Disciplines
When you will come to know about the content of this UI, you will be able to interrelate the various
disciplines and how all are integrated with AI. AI had deep inter relation to all fields be it be Linguistics,
Mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences.
• AI in Environment.
• Personalized advertisements on social media
• Chatbots
• E-mail Filters
• Predictive searches
Essential Question
By the End of this UI, you will be able to appreciate the importance of AI and will be able to answer the
following Question
INTRODUCTION TO AI
4 | DPSGS
Setting the Scope of Inquiry - Why and how much do we need to know
Why?
• To identify what is Artificial Intelligence and what is not?
• To analyze the applications of AI around us
• To develop critical thinking skills by reflecting on the ethical issues around AI
How?
• By recognizing the difference between AI, ML and DL
• By identifying the domains of AI through real life examples
• By apprehending case studies based on Human-Machine Interactions.
The Pre-requisites!!:
• Human Machine interaction
• To identify and appreciate Artificial Intelligence and describe its applications in daily life.
• To identify what is Artificial Intelligence and what is not?
• To relate, apply and reflect on the Human-Machine Interactions.
• To identify and interact with the three domains of AI: Data, Computer Vision and Natural
Language Processing
• To understand and reflect on the ethical issues around AI.
• To gain awareness around AI bias and AI access.
Unpacking of UI
Your journey begins with an activity in which your will watch the given video and discuss about the
same in class. Along with video clip, a pre reading text is given and observation of same video will
also be discussed in class. This small activity will be conducted to reinforce the concept.
Transaction
You will be making Sway, question bank, graphic organizer by using video links and pre reading
material. In some of the sessions, you will be guided through and given reference material to gain
an insight to different skills. You will be divided in groups in which you will discuss the topic of
each day and note down the important points. Then at the end of UI the group will present the pecha
kucha presentation which will be assessed.
Mid UI review and reflection
Somewhere around the mid of UI, mid UI review will be conducted through flip class worksheet to
ensure that you do not have any concepts where you are facing difficulty. It will also help you to
identify those parts where you might need more attention and support.
End of UI
At the conclusion of the UI, an assessment of learning will be conducted through PPT presentation.
Following the end of UI assessment, whole class reflection will be conducted where you get to
know your achievements and challenges that you have faced in this unit. The facilitator will design
with you further plans which will help you to work on your strengths in building the concepts
around this particular unit. The individual discussion that you will have with your facilitator will
become your assessment dialog and the plans that you will create will be a part of your personalized
learning pathway.
2. Differentiating between Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence
3. Analyzing the application of AI around us
4. Understanding the domains of AI through real life examples
5. Analyzing ethical concerns of AI

Session Flow - Key Milestones
Session-1: Use of Sway
The facilitator would provide the videos as viewing material to arouse curiosity and to connect you from
known to unknown. These videos will set the pace for the further enquiry. At the end of each session
students have to express their understanding by creating a sway based on the topic. On the completion of
the UI they will have to submit it.
Pre-Class Activity:
A video based on different types of intelligence will be shared with the class as a pre class activity

Assessment Parameters:
Session-2
Pre-Class Activity:
Go through the following link thoroughly. Based on this reading, a group discussion will be
conducted in the class.
DPSGS | 9
Case 1: You are stuck on the top floor of a skyscraper that is about to be demolished. There are no
windows or stairs, and there’s nobody to help you. You have to choose one of three elevators to
escape. Inside Elevator One is a spider, that can bite and poison you so that you’ll be dead in under
three seconds. Inside Elevator Two are mosquitos that carry a disease. The vaccine to cure this
disease is very rare. Inside Elevator Three is boiling water that will scald you to death. Which
elevator do you choose?
Case 2: You’re lost in a cave, and don’t know where to go. There are five passages that lead you to
the outside of the cave. In Passage One, there is a landslide, and the tunnel will immediately fill
with stones. In Passage Two, there is poisonous gas that is extremely toxic to animals. In Passage
Three, there are blood-sucking bats. If you get bitten, you are infected with a deathly disease. In
Passage Four, there is molten lava that can kill you in seconds. In Passage Five, there are radioactive
plants. The radiation can kill you. What passage do you choose?
Case 3: You are in a prison cell, with enough food and water to last you three days. However, there
is an escape to freedom. You have to choose between three doors. Behind the First Door, is a wall
of fire. Behind the Second Door, there is a mama polar bear and her cub. Behind the third door, is
a lake full of hungry crocodiles. Which door do you choose?
Assessment Parameters:
• Rubrics for Sway presentation
Session-3
Pre-Class Activity:
Collect information about the different AI applications around you and their uses.
Learning Engagement:
• Creation of questionnaire on different AI applications and their uses.

• Self-Driving cars/ Automatic Cars
• Face Lock in Smartphones
• Email- Filters
Pre-Class Activity:
Go through the following reading material. It will give you insight about the ethical concerns related
to AI.
Scenario 1:
Let us imagine that we are in year 2030. Self-Driving cars which are just a concept in today’s time
are now on roads. People like us are buying them for ease and are using it for our daily transits. Of-
course because of all the features which this car has, it is expensive. Now, let us assume, one day
your father is going to office in his self-driving car. He is sitting in the back seat as the car is driving
itself. Suddenly, a small boy comes in front of this car. The incident was so sudden that the car is
only able to make either of the two choices:
1. Go straight and hit the boy who has come in front of the car and injure him severely.
2. Take a sharp right turn to save the boy and smash the car into a metal pole thus damaging
the car as well as injuring the person sitting in it.
With the help of this scenario, we need to understand that the developer of the car goes through all
such dilemmas while developing the car’s algorithm. Thus, here the morality of the developer gets
transferred into the machine as what according to him/her is right would have a higher priority and
hence would be the selection made by the machine.
If you were in the place of this developer and if there was no other alternative to the situation, which
one of the two would you prioritize and why?
Scenario 2:
Let us now assume that the car has hit the boy who came in front of it. Considering this as an
accident, who should be held responsible for it? Why?
1. The person who bought this car
3. The developer who developed the car’s algorithm
4. The boy who came in front of the car and got severely injured
Session-7
Pre-Class Activity:
• You will be divided into groups and you have to create a 5 minute Pecha Kucha presentation
based on your understanding of the concept of AI. The last slide of the presentation must
carry the mind map of the concepts learned.
