Breakdancing (originally B-boying or breaking) is a style of street dance that originated

primarily among African American but also 0uerto 1ican youth, many former members

of theBlack #pades , the 'oung #pades, and the Baby #pades during the mid *+s.

Breakdancing as further de&eloped by 0uerto 1ican youth in e 'ork /ity in the late

*+s to the early 2+s.345he dance spread orldide due to popularity in the media, especially in regions such as the nited 6ingdom, /anada, 7apan, $ermany, France,

1ussia, and #outh 6orea. While di&erse in the amount of &ariation a&ailable in the dance,

b-boying consists of four kinds of mo&ement8 toprock , donrock ,poer mo&es , and

    free9es . B-boying is typically danced to hip-hop ,funk music , and

especiallybreakbeats , although modern trends allo for much ider &arieties of music

along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.

A practitioner of this dance is called a b-boy, b-girl, or breaker. Although the term

"breakdance" is fre:uently used to refer to the dance in popular culture and in the moremainstream entertainment industry, "b-boying" and "breaking" are the original terms.

5hese terms are preferred by the ma;ority of the pioneers and most notable practitioners.

5he terminology used to refer to b-boying (break-boying) changed after promotion by themainstream media. Although idespread, the term "breakdancing" is looked don upon

$ra&ity Benders cre shocasing the four elements of b-boying Stoprock,donrock,free9es, andpoer mo&esS some cre choreography, and a short battle.

5here are four primary elements that form b-boying. 5hey include toprock, donrock, poer mo&es, and free9es.

5oprock generally refers to any string of steps performed from a standing position. %t is

usually the first and foremost opening display of style, though dancers often transition

from other aspects of b-boying to toprock and back. 5oprock has a &ariety of steps hich

can each be &aried according to the dancers e>pression (i.e. aggressi&e, calm, e>cited). Agreat deal of freedom is alloed in the definition of toprock8 as long as the dancer

maintains cleanliness, form, and the b-boy attitude, theoretically anything can be toprock.

5oprock can dra upon many other dance styles such aspopping , locking , tap dance ,

Cindy hop , or house dance . 5ransitions from toprock to donrock and poer mo&es

    are called "drops".3==4

onrock (also knon as "footork" or "floorork") is used to describe any

mo&ement on the floor ith the hands supporting the dancer as much as the feet.onrock includes mo&es such as the foundational -step , and its &ariants such as the

=-step. 5he most basic of donrock is done entirely on feet and hands but more comple>

&ariations can in&ol&e the knees hen threading limbs through each other.

    0oer mo&es are acrobatic mo&es that re:uire momentum , speed, endurance,

strength, and control to e>ecute. 5he breaker is generally supported by his upper body

hile the rest of his body creates circular momentum. #ome e>amples are the indmill ,

sipe , back spin, and head spin. #ome poer mo&es are borroed from gymnastics and

martial arts. An e>ample of a poer mo&e taken from gymnastics is the 5homas Flair

hich is shortened and spelled flare in b-boying.

Free9es are stylish poses that re:uire the breaker to suspend himself or herself off the

ground using upper body strength in poses such as thepike . 5hey are used to emphasi9e

strong beats in the music and often signal the end of a b-boy set. Free9es can be linked

into chains or "stacks" here breakers go from free9e to free9e to free9e in order to hit

the beats of the music hich displays musicality and physical strength.

    B-boy styles3edit 4

5here are many indi&idual styles used in b-boying. %ndi&idual styles often stem from a

dancers region of origin and influences. oe&er, some people such as b-boy 7acob

Although there are some generalities in the styles that e>ist, many dancers combine

elements of different styles ith their on ideas and knoledge in order to create auni:ue style of their on. B-boys can therefore be categori9ed into a broad style hich

generally shocases the same types of techni:ues.

0oer8 5his style of b-boying is hat most members of the general public

associate ith the term "breakdancing". 0oer mo&es comprise full-body spins androtations that gi&e the illusion of defying gra&ity. E>amples of poer mo&es include

head spins, back spins, indmills, flares, air tracksGair flares, +s, clusi&ely in their sets are referred to as "poer heads".

Blo-up8 A style of b-boying hich focuses on the "o factor" of certain poer

mo&es, free9es, and circus styles. Bloups consist of performing a se:uence of as

many difficult trick combinations in as :uick succession as possible in order to"smack" or e>ceed the &irtuosity of the other b-boys performance. 5he names of

some of these mo&es are air baby, hollo backs, solar eclipse, and re&erse air baby,

among others. 5he main goal in blo-up style is the rapid transition through ase:uence of poer mo&es ending in a skillful free9e or "suicide". Cike free9es, a

suicide is used to emphasi9e a strong beat in the music and signal the end to a routine.

While free9es dra attention to a controlled final position, suicides dra attention tothe motion of falling or losing control. B-boys or b-girls ill make it appear that they

ha&e lost control and fall onto their backs, stomachs, etc. 5he more painful the suicide

appears, the more impressi&e it is, but breakers e>ecute them in a ay to minimi9e

pain. Fla&or8 A style that is based more on elaborate toprock, donrock, andGor free9es.

5his style is focused more on the beat and musicality of the song than ha&ing to rely

on poer mo&es only. B-boys ho base their dance on "fla&or" or style are knon as

    "style heads".
