ACTIVITY 2: Being able to recall (remember) facts and details is an important reading strategy so we understand what we have read. The facts are what actually happened and can be proven to be either true or false. Today you will choose a newspaper article about space from the Kids News website. CLICK HERE You may choose any article about space that is of interest to you. There are three different levels to choose from: Green, Orange or Red. (Select your own ‘Just Right’ level).

Editing is the process of reviewing a piece of writing to correct any errors. ACTIVITY:

Re-write the passage below using a red pencil to mark the corrections. Look for capital letters, full stops, apostrophes, spelling and grammar mistakes. If you are having trouble reading this, refer to the bigger version below.

WARM UP: Watch the video on the Top 10 Most Famous Bridges. CLICK HERE As you are watching the video, you may want to pause it occasionally to examine the various examples of bridges and the lines and angles used in their construction. ACTIVITY: Yesterday you learnt about acute, obtuse and right angles. There are other types of angles as well such as straight angles, reflex angles and a complete angle (revolution).

Let’s look at the bridge below.

Today you will be learning the differences between a positive relationship and a negative relationship. What does a positive relationship feel like versus a negative relationship? We have lots of different relationships in our lives. Some are positive and some can be negative. We have relationships with our parents/carers, friends, brothers, sisters, grandparents and wider family. ACTIVITY: In your workbook, answer the following questions. Can you think about what it feels like when a relationship is positive?

- What emotions do you feel? - What does your body feel like? - What might you think?

Now using the Newspaper Article Fact Finder template (see below), record some of the important facts you learnt. REMEMBER TO INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE

ARTICLE YOU READ!

ACTIVITY:

1. How many different types of angles can you see on the bridge?

2. What is the purpose of having the steel in the form of angles?

3. Where else in real life would you find such angles?

4. What do you notice about the size of the angles?

Can you think about what it feels like when a relationship is negative?

- What emotions do you feel? - What does your body feel like? - What might you think?

Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Choose an article from the Green section, such as Wanted: four people to live like Martians CLICK HERE The article can be read to you if you click on ‘Listen to the Story’ at the bottom of the page.

Find as may mistakes as possible. Design and then draw a bridge using as many angles as you can. (You may want to refer to the video again to get some ideas).

Use the inquiry attachment (see below) to gather ideas.

Too easy? Too easy? Too easy? Too easy? Choose an article from the Red section. Complete the editing passage. Once you are

done, you can be the teacher!! Write a paragraph and include some mistakes on purpose! Make sure you know what the mistakes are. Now, hand the paragraph to a family member and see if they can edit it correctly. Go through the answers together.

Design and then construct a bridge using as many angles as you can. (You may use any raw materials you have at home, such as straws, sticks, cardboard etc).

Write a paragraph explaining the differences between a positive and a negative relationship.

Don’t have a printer? Don’t have _________? Don’t have _________? Don’t have _________? If you can’t print the Newspaper Article Fact Finder template, just record the important facts in your book.
