READING WRITING MATHS INQUIRY/OTHER Learning intention Learning intention Learning intention Learning intention Focus: Main Idea We are learning to find the main idea of a text.

Focus: WOW Writing

We are learning to write for a sustained period.

Focus: Subtraction We are learning to understand how number facts can help to solve subtraction problems.

Focus: The Solar System We are learning to identify features of our solar system.

Success Criteria Success Criteria Success Criteria Success Criteria I can find the main idea of a text. I can put the main idea of a text into my own words and include supporting details.

I can write productively for at least 20

minutes.

I can use interesting vocabulary in my writing.

I can apply strategies to solve subtraction problems. I can use the count up and count down strategy to solve subtraction problems.

I can label different parts of our solar system. I can compare parts of the solar system.

Task Task Task Task ACTIVITY 1: Read for 15 minutes independently – You can read a book of your choice from home, or a story from Sunshine Online, Reading Eggs/Eggspress or Kids News. ACTIVITY 2: Today you will try to find the main idea of a text. The main idea of a text is the most important point that the author is making about the topic/subject. The details are the key points that support the main idea. Finding the main idea: • Read the title and look at the pictures for clues. • As you read, think about and identify the important information.

Remember ‘WOW Writing’ expectations:

Try to remain seated and write somewhere quiet, away from distractions.

No illustrations until you have finished.

You get to choose which genre (writing style)

you like, including: recount, narrative,

persuasive, poetry, procedure, information

report, transactional (letters & cards).

First, spend a few minutes thinking what

genre you will use today, and then pick a

topic. Maybe you did something fun in the

holidays? You could write a recount about it.

Perhaps you want to convince (persuade)

your parents about getting a new pet. You

could write a procedure for a new game you

made up in the holidays. Perhaps you have

developed a new super power – you could

write a narrative story about it.

WARM UP: I bought something at the supermarket and got 5c change. How much did it cost and how much money did I pay with? ACTIVITY: Some words associated with subtraction are: take away, difference, less than, subtract, reduce, fewer, decrease, etc.

Let’s look at the count-up strategy. When you have two numbers that are not too far apart from each other, start from the smaller number and count up to the bigger number to find the difference. E.g. 58-55, you count up from 55 to 58. 55 + 1 + 1 + 1. The difference (answer) is 3. Let’s look at the count-down strategy. When you have two numbers far apart from each other, start from the bigger number and count down to the smaller number to find

This term, our inquiry topic is Our Changing Earth!

You will be learning all about our wonderful solar system! Our Solar system is made up of the following (These are not in any specific order): - Outer Space - The Milky Way - Mars - Earth - Neptune - Saturn - Jupiter -

• Look for repeated words, pictures, information, themes or ideas. • Ask yourself: ‘What is the text mostly about?’ Read the text ‘Slip Slop Slap’ (see below) and answer the 4 questions.

Answer the questions using full sentences and NOT one word answers.

The poster may give you some more ideas.

(see below) The choice is endless!!

Now ‘write freely’ in your book for

approximately 20-35 minutes on a topic and

genre of your choice.

the difference. E.g. 38-4, you count down from 38, four times. 38 -1, -1,-1,-1 = 37,36,35,34. The difference (answer) is 34. Solve the sums below:

1. 28 – 23 = 2. 45 – 38 = 3. 82 – 76 = 4. 35 – 28 = 5. 27 – 3 = 6. 42 – 6 = 7. 73 – 6 = 8. 15 – 8 = 9. 77 – 12 = 10. 66 – 7 =

Please write down which strategy you used

for each question.

- Uranus - The Sun - Venus - Mercury

Watch the video, to learn all about our amazing solar system. CLICK HERE After watching the video, use the word bank provided on ‘The Solar System’ sheet (see below), to label different parts of the solar system. After you have labelled the different parts of the solar system, answer the following question: - Which planet is the biggest? - Which planet orbits furthest from the

Sun? - What is the name of our galaxy? - Which planet has the most rings?

Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Too hard? Answer the following question:

- What is the text ‘Slip Slop Slap’ mostly about?

Try to write for at least 15 minutes without leaving your seat. Then illustrate your work.

Complete Subtraction Worksheet 1. (See below)

ONLY label the different parts of the solar system.

Too easy? Too easy? Too easy? Too easy? After answering the four questions, complete the Crazy Creative Challenge. Bring this poster back to school to pin up in the classroom for Term 4.

Include some interesting adjectives and phrases in your writing. Your WOW writing should be at least 1 page, with evidence of paragraphs to separate your thoughts and ideas. Illustrations are optional.

Answer the questions above and then complete Subtraction Worksheet 2. (See below)

Can you think of any other facts about our solar system? List 3 or more facts.

Don’t have _________? Don’t have _________? Don’t have _________? Don’t have a printer? N/A N/A N/A DRAW our wonderful solar system on paper

and label the different parts.
