How to keep a paper FOCUSED

The THESIS is developed and maintained throughout.

There is very little or no loosely related material.

All points and supporting ideas are clear and convincing and relate to the thesis.

Read each of these thesis statements and discuss what the rest of the paper will look like based on this one sentence.

• Which of these is the best thesis?

• Which is too narrow?

Sample Paragraph:

Sea turtles navigate the ocean using the magnetic fields much like sailors use latitude and longitude. According to the article How Sea Turtles Navigate to the Same Beach Every Year, scientists realized that sea turtles use “the magnetic lines in the sea to find their way home.” Even though the animals can’t see the lines, they can somehow sense them in order to help guide them as they travel. This really is amazing and interesting, since we as humans don’t “sense” the magnetic lines ourselves. Turtles, though, always find their way home thanks to magnetic fields, both in the sea and on the beach.
