 Learn About It!

An entertainment speech is a kind of speech where the                   main purpose is enjoyment. It aims to make the audience                   laugh or smile. This is usually delivered during light-hearted                 dinners or situations that call for humor, amusement, and                 relaxation.

Entertainment speeches are one of those types of speeches                 that may come in handy especially with the youth and                   children. The tone and purpose of entertainment speeches               tend to attract a wider audience, thus, making it a good                     starting point for most speech deliveries.

The basic structure of an entertainment speech includes an introduction, body and                       conclusion.

The introduction contains the central idea of your entertainment speech. It should capture                         the attention of the audience through the use of humor, anecdotes, and other strategies. The                             body strengthens the central idea while the conclusion reiterates it.

Possible Topics of Entertainment Speeches:

● The Society from the Eyes of a Baby ● Topsy-turvy Mother Earth: When Humans Became Ozone Layers ● The Funniest Dream in my Own Nightmare

Lesson 2: Composing an Entertainment Speech

It has an introduction, body,                   and conclusion.

 Warm-up!

 Learn About It!

When composing an entertainment speech, it is important to                 establish the structure first. A basic entertainment speech               has an introduction, body and conclusion

Writing the Introduction of an Entertainment Speech

When writing the introduction of an entertainment speech,               make sure to capture the attention of the audience. You may                     use humor, anecdotes and other witty remarks to make your                   audience know that they are bound to have a good time with                       your speech.

Below are different examples of an introduction for an                 entertainment speech:

(1)  Good morning ladies and gentlemen. It is sticky and it is soft. It is soft and it is hard. It is sweet and sour. What is this? It is bubble                                                 gum-a type of gum with many health benefits and I am here to talk about them all.  (2) Ladies and gentlemen, I have invited another visitor to assist me. He is a wonderful                             husband to his wife and a father to his kids. Who is this? Well, it’s none other than me. This                                       person standing before you is a role model. Or maybe not!

Writing the Body of an Entertainment Speech

Always remember that a stand-up comedy is different from an entertainment speech. An                         entertainment speech has a clear message which is elaborated in the body of the speech.

The body of your entertainment speech should revolve around a central theme, Be sure to                             present the main points and details that will support your main points. Express these points                             using humor to make the audience feel good while making your message unforgettable.

Below is a short example of the body of a speech:

Humans are confusing creatures. When he wants something, he does everything he can in                           order to get it but when he finally has that thing, he loses interest. He wants to buy                                   extravagant things but when he finally does, he does not appreciate them and craves for                             something more instead. When he loves someone, he hurts them.

Truly, man does not know what he wants, what he is living for and why he exists in this                                     world that does nothing to help ease his everyday confusion.

So, ladies and gentlemen, do you still want to be a human being?

Writing the Conclusion of an Entertainment Speech

When writing the conclusion of an entertainment speech, make sure it is memorable and that                             it summarizes the central theme of your speech. The goal is to leave them laughing after your                                 conclusion. You may use humor, funny quotes or anecdotes, as well, to end your speech.

Below is an example of how to end you entertainment speech:

Ladies and gentlemen, you have to lead your own life and not let others dictate to you on                                   what choices you’ll make. Grab life firmly on the arm and pull it.

Guide it towards the path that you want it to take.

Just remember: Make sure to loosen your hold when it says “ouch”!

   Common Types of Humor

These are some types of humor that can be incorporated in entertainment speeches.

 1. Turn of phrase – This is employed by making a serious point then turning things around by                                   revealing an unexpected meaning behind the words.

Example: This boy is a hero. A hero of darkness.

  2. Pun – This is employed by using a word with its serious meaning than using the same word                                     in a different meaning or using a word which suggests more than one meaning.

Example:

Speaker: Ladies and Gentlemen, could you describe what a night is?

Audience: dark, scary

Speaker: Wow! I didn’t know that knights from the medieval ages were dark and scary.

  3. Exaggeration – This is employed by making a small thing into a bigger and unbelievable                               one.

Example: You see, when you love someone, you should wag your tails for them like a dog.

  4. Understatement – This is employed by underplaying a bigger situation or issue.

Example: Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Have you ever heard a lion’s roar that is so scary? Well, I have, and I almost fell asleep.

Lesson 3: Delivering an Entertainment Speech

Delivering a written or memorized script in front of an                   audience may be a fearful task for some, or a challenge                     to most people.  It takes talent and numerous repeated practices to               deliver a perfect speech. It takes more effort to make it                     entertaining and humorous to an audience.

 Warm-up!

Think-Pair-Share  Use the cluster chart of amusing and funny ideas generated by the class. In groups of three,                                 come up with three funny jokes or anecdotes that may be fictional, to deliver to the class. The                                   purpose of the sharing is to make the teacher or most of the class laugh or smile.  Guide questions:

● Was it difficult to craft or create a joke for the class? Why or why not? ● What were the things you considered while writing your own jokes or anecdotes?

 Learn About It!

Making your friends laugh may be an easy task for you may                       know them well to understand what makes them laugh.

Delivering an entertainment speech with humorous lines             and interesting anecdotes, and a main message might be a                   challenge if you are facing a bigger, and more diverse                   audience.

The following are some tips when delivering an               entertainment speech:

Analyze Your Audience

Make sure that the humor is appropriate for the age of the audience as well as their                                 educational background and status in life. Different kinds audiences will respond in different                         ways based on the content of your speech. Knowing the audience will also help you choose an                                 appropriate topic.

Be Prepared

Do some relaxation techniques before the speech. You may inhale deeply and exhale slowly                           to relax your body before delivering the speech. Make an outline of the speech in your head if                                   you are going to deliver it from memory. It is helpful to carry note cards, a small card with                                     notes for your speech, so you don’t forget anything.

Adapt to the Occasion

The humor in your speech should match the occasion. There are situations which do not call                               for humor and there are some where jokes will be appreciated.

  Know Your Time Limit

Be mindful of the time. The length of the speech will depend on the time given for you to                                     deliver it. Some situations like a graduation ceremony require long speeches, but there are                           some situations like a reunion dinner where you will be required to talk only for a few                                 minutes.

Enjoy Yourself

It is important that you enjoy your own speech. The audience will have a hard time enjoying                                 your speech if you look like you are not enjoying what you are talking about.

Check Your Understanding

Write true if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong.

Lesson 4: Nonverbal Cues in an Entertainment Speech

When communicating with another person, your           nonverbal cues are considered as important as what               you are saying verbally. This is also the case when                   delivering speeches.

 Warm-up!

 Learn About It!

Nonverbal cues when delivering a speech includes facial               expression, tone of voice and gestures.

Below are some nonverbal cues you could use when delivering                   an entertainment speech:

Maintain Eye Contact with the Audience

Eye contact establishes interaction with the audience. We               change the focus of our eyes from time to time whenever we                       deliver a speech. When you speak, make sure to make sustained and direct eye contact with                               the audience. When delivering an entertainment speech, it is important to make eye contact                           to see if we offended anyone from the audience. It will also help the speaker to see if anyone                                     is bored.

Use Appropriate Facial Expressions

Our facial expressions show our emotions. When delivering an entertainment speech, it is                         best not to frown. Look light-hearted and smile often.

  Have a Good Posture

When delivering an entertainment speech, you have to stand properly. Your shoulder and                         your back should be straightened. Do not lean on one side and keep your hands at the side.

Use Gestures

Gestures make a speech livelier especially           when delivering an entertainment speech.

There are different types of gestures. Some             of the common ones include:

Iconic – This is like painting using the hands                 as brush.

Example: Illustrating the shape of an object by using the hands to draw the shape in the air.    Deictic –These are also known as “pointing gestures”. They                 indicate imaginary, real or implied objects, people, etc.

Beat – These are the gestures           similar to the rhythmic beating of a finger, hand or arm. These                       could be a short beat, which is used to mark an important point                         or a succession of beats, which is used to emphasize an                     important concept.   Metaphorical – these are used to explain an idea without any

physical form. Common forms of this gesture include waving of the hands and pinching with                             fingers.

It is helpful not to wear too many accessories or                                   wear clothes that have flashy colors. It is also best to avoid revealing attire.
