Grade  Level:    Grade  8

Setting:    Classroom

Learning  Objectives:  1.  Use  a  range  of  resources  to  research  information  about  wetlands.  2.  Organise  research  using  a  graphic  organizer.  3.  Present  finalized  research  in  the  format  of  an  informative  pamphlet.

Duration:    2-‐3  lessons

Lesson:  Starter  (5  minutes):  Explain  to  students  that  wetlands  are  found  all  over  the  world.  Show  them  the  Wetlands  of  the  World  Photographs  have  them  guess  where  each  wetland  is  located  in  the  world.        Activity  (over  span  of  2-‐3  lessons):  Explain  to  students  that  they  will  be  researching  different  aspects  of  wetlands  and  presenting  their  research  in  the  format  of  a  pamphlet.  Topics  they  should  address  in  their  pamphlet  are:

-‐ What  a  wetland  is  -‐ Why  wetlands  are  important  -‐ Ways  in  which  wetlands  are  negatively  impacted  -‐ How  wetlands  can  be  protected  -‐ Information  about  a  major  wetland  in  the  world  (size,  location,  number/type  of  plant

and  animal  species,  endangerment  status)    Give  each  student  a  copy  of  the  Wetland  Research  Organizer  worksheet  and  explain  that  they  can  use  it  to  organize  their  researched  information.  Students  can  use  a  range  of  resources  to  research  information,  including  internet,  books,  magazines,  articles  etc.  When  students  have  completed  their  worksheet  and  has  it  approved,  they  can  then  move  on  to  completing  their  pamphlet.      Conclusion  (15  minutes):    Find  students  who  researched  the  same  major  wetland  and  group  them  together.  Each  group  must  then  prepare  and  present  a  short  presentation  of  their  major  wetland  to  share  to  the  class.    Accommodations/Modifications  Students  can  present  their  researched  information  in  a  variety  of  formats  (video,  presentation,

power  point  etc.)  Extensions  Students  can  prepare  short  public  service  announcements  about  wetlands  to  present  on  morning  announcements,  post  on  classroom  website  etc.
