Grade school students top the national SBA Exam
From among thousands of students from various private schools nationwide who took the SBA exam last academic year 2018-2019, 4 grade school students achieved the highest/ perfect score in SBA for Grade 1.
Jacob Matteo Corpin of Grade 2 Cooperation, Rafael Cedric Menor of Grade 2 Unity, Angelica Grace Nadunza of Grade 2 Unity, and Rinnah Andriana Rodil of Grade 2 Cooperation, got perfect scores in the exam.
The Standards-Based Assessment (SBA) of the Asian Psychological Services and Assessment (APSA) evaluates students’ performance based on the required standards for a specific grade level by measuring student achievement and competencies in the core subject areas: English, Language, Arts, Mathematics, and Science.
ECED sponsors free Growth Mindset seminar for caregivers and drivers
Next to the immediate family, the caregiver is the person closest to a child. In cases where both parents are working, the role of the caregiver and the driver takes added dimensions. They assume responsibilities that could have a lasting effect on their wards.
Recognizing this, SMC’s Early Childhood Education Department (ECED) will conduct a free seminar for caregivers and drivers of its students (from Preschool to Grade 2) including the bus operators and concessionaires on how to better nurture the students’ developing potentials and the growth mindset. It will be held on October 05, 2019, Saturday, at Room 206 from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Attendees learned to internalize their role in the development of their wards’ Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Diligence Quotient (DQ). They also get to interact with their fellow caregivers and shared experiences on how to better help a child.

ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL Effective AY 2019-2020
Guided by the principles of Growth Mindset, South Mansfield
College believes that assessment and reporting processes shape
student, parent and community beliefs about learning. In line with
this, teachers provide success experiences and assess growth over
time.
This academic year, assessment tools based on growth mindset
principles will be applied to all levels and all subject areas. For
instance, check up quizzes will not be recorded since they serve
as formative assessment. They are considered checkpoint tests
and will also serve as basis for feedback after a topic, chapter,
or unit. Learning gaps identified in the formative assessment will
be addressed by giving additional drills, worksheets, exercise
through homework, differentiation time, and after-school
programs (ASPs).

Students take
SBA pre-test Basic Education students took the Standards-Based Assessment (SBA) Pre-Test last August 23, 2019 to get a profile of where they are in English, Science and Math. The tests will also show to the school the specific areas to work on to ensure that all learners will meet the standards for success.
With standards-based assessment, students, teachers, parents, and school administrators will benefit as the exam provides good feedback to the student on how well he/she has learned and the degree of his/her readiness to move to a higher educational level. The exam also pinpoints competencies of students and learning gaps which serve as bases for learning reinforcement or remediation.
The SBA provides an objective and relevant feedback to the school in terms of its quality and effectiveness of instruction against national norms and international standards.
The SBA Post Test results are considered as Third Term Long Test in Math, Science, and English.
Parents will receive the result of their children’s Standards Based Assessment (SBA) pretest during the First Term Parent-Teacher Conference.

Growth Mindset for Parents
As a parent, how do I help promote a Growth Mindset?
1. Have daily learning discussion with your kids. At dinner, in the car or at
bedtime, take time for both you and your child to share the answers to these types of
questions:
How will you learn today? How will you share it?
What did you try hard today?
What mistakes did you make that taught you something?
What did you learn on the first day of class?
2. Give feedback on process only. Praise persistence, strategies, seeking
challenges, setting goals, planning, or using creative strategies. Don’t praise
personal abilities like being smart, pretty, or artistic.
3. Tell your children that brains can grow. Brains can grow stronger and that
intelligence can improve throughout your life. Intelligence is not fixed. It’s
changeable. This is called brain plasticity. (Aren’t you so glad?) . Learning changes
our brain.
4. Encourage risk, failing and learning from mistakes. We must let our kids fail
now so that they can strengthen their growth mindset muscles. Failure teaches our
kids important lessons. For one, it’s how they learn resiliency.
5. Encourage and model positive self talk. Always start with a positive remark. Let
the teacher know what your child likes about their class. Share what brings out the
best in your child at home. Share what doesn’t work. Establish a partnership
approach with a teacher.
