“Bye, Mom! I’m going to play baseball with the guys!” called Charlie.
“Whoa!” said Mom. “Don’t you have to write a story for school tomorrow?”
“Yes,” Charlie said slowly. “But I can’t think of anything to write about. Maybe I’ll get an idea while I’m playing baseball.”
“Sorry, but homework comes first,” Mom said firmly. “You could write about our trip to Grandpa’s farm.”
“I already tried that,” said Charlie.“You could write about your rock
collection,” Mom suggested.“I tried that, too,” said Charlie.
“I know! I’ll write a story about a boy who couldn’t think of anything to write about!”
Charlie wrote his story. Then he read it to Mom. “Great work!” she said. “Now you can go play baseball!”
As Liz was walking home, she saw something shiny on the sidewalk. It was a diamond ring! Liz picked up the ring and put it on her finger.
Liz showed the ring to her mother. “I found this ring on the sidewalk,” said Liz.
“Someone lost that ring. It is valuable,” said Liz’s mother.
Liz wanted to keep the ring, but she knew what she should do. Liz took the ring to the police station.
“A woman just called about this ring,” said the officer. “The ring is very special to her. Thank you for bringing it in.”
A few days later, Liz got a letter from the officer. The owner of the ring had left a reward for Liz at the station!
“It pays to do the right thing,” Liz told her mother.

Today is Ali’s birthday. When Ali went to breakfast, her mom didn’t say anything about her birthday. Her dad didn’t say anything. Her brother didn’t say anything. Ali walked to school alone. She felt sad.
At school, Ali’s friends didn’t say anything about her birthday, either. “This is not a good day,” Ali thought as she walked home alone.
Ali was feeling sad as she opened the door to her house.
Then suddenly she heard, “Happy birthday!” Everyone was there: her mom, dad, brother, and friends. There were even a big cake and piles of presents.
“I thought you forgot my birthday,” said Ali.
“We wanted to keep the party a secret,” said her mom.
“It’s a good day after all,” Ali replied with a smile.
