  • Rhythm | Arrhythmia

    The Piano ManThe diagrams to the left and to the right are derived from a video of a man (pictured above) playing the piano on 16th street. These diagrams were used to delineate elements of the facade and the building footprint.

    Denver can be defined as a culture that greatly appreciates public art, such as the painted pianos (pictured below and to the left). The rich culture and movement of Denvers 16th street provide inspiration to natives and visitors alike. A study of the rhythmic and arrhythmic sights and sounds that take place on 16th street guided the design process. Rhythmic elements include the structure of music, the rigidity of the piano form, and the orthogonal buildings surrounding the site. Arrhythmic elements include the spontaneity of the piano players hands as he plays, the sounds of the street, and the diagonal lines of the site derived from the adjacent Denver Art Museum.

    If a building is not seen as valued, then it will be torn down. Currently, the only generation that has built memories of this building and values it is the older generation. They Remember what it was like when it was a power plant. They may have worked there. This proposal allows for new memories to be created. The TXU Power Plant will no longer be a place you just drive by on your way to work every day but a place you take your kids after school, a place where you take a pottery class with your mother, and a place where your work is displayed.

    With plans for major revamping of Fort Worth Uptown in place, there will be an extensive amount of new construction in the area. This new construction could easily dilute Fort Worths historic identity that they are so proud of. This can be avoided by preserving some of the key historic buildings in the Uptown area. The TXU Power Plant is a good place to start.

    From the exterior, the TXU Power Plant is begging to hold something grand. The arched windows only get more impressive as you enter the main hall. The light cascades through the windows beautifully, giving the main hall a cathedral effect. All this building needs is someone who can look past the grime to see the value and who is willing to breathe a little life into it.

  • ADMODALLAS MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE

    The Dallas Museum of Architecture is a combination of learning, viewing, and working environments. There are auditorium spaces to further the education of the public and of architects. Gallery spaces place architectural pieces in the view of the community. The American Institute of Architecture also has offices in the upper portions of the building.

  • SITE RESPONSE:The Initial response was to go up with the building because of the ten foot wall installed by the park. This wall completely blocked views to the Nasher and the DMA and limited the view of the Winspear as seen in image_4. The connection was not strong between the project and the arts district and the park.The need to move up guided my decision to raise that land and make shaded steps as an extension of the site. The need for verticality also drove my decision to have a small footprint. Because the square footage was limited, the smaller footprint meant a higher the building. A taller building not only allows occupants to see outside the building but for the building to be seen from the other locations in the arts district.

  • The Dallas Museum of Architecture is located at 1909 Woodall Rodgers Freeway. It is within walking distance of the DMA, the Nasher, the Wyly, and the Winspear. It will play a huge role in the Arts District by connecting all of these buildings and drawing pedestrians through the park. With the addition of the DMoA to the arts district, people will have cause to cross The Park.

    My goal for this project was to create a structure that appeared to be a sculptural element of the landscape. From the exterior, it catches the viewer and pulls them in. It also offers a shaded public outdoor space that is an extension of The Park. The Building not only contains architecture, but offers an experience of the building itself. There are many instances where the visitor is allowed to experience the structure and materiality of the DMoA first hand.
