Establishment of the Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Hyogo

Purpose of Establishment

The University of Hyogo will establish the Graduate School of Social Sciences in April 2021, by reorganizing and integrating the Graduate School of Economics, the Graduate School of Business Administration, the Graduate School of Accountancy, and the Graduate School of Business. The Graduate School of Social Sciences consists of fi ve departments: the Department of Economics (Master’s Program and Doctoral Program), the Department of Business Administration (Master’s Program and Doctoral Program), the Department of Global Business (Master’s Program), the Department of Professional Accountancy (Professional Degree Program), and the Department of Professional Business (Professional Degree Program).

As part of the eff ort to respond to the changes in global circumstances brought about by rapid globalization, the University of Hyogo reorganized undergraduate schools and opened the School of Economics and Management in 2019, with the goal to develop human resources who can play an active role on the global stage, using their extensive knowledge of economics and business administration. This time, we have decided to launch a new graduate school to provide a higher level of graduate education and research in economics and business administration, and to off er our education and research organization’s prompt and fl exible response to social demand. The new graduate school has four major features: education/research programs that benefi t from the achievements and characteristics of the existing graduate schools; the Department of Global Business created as an extension of the Global Business Course of the School of Economics and Management; a clearer and more specifi c vision of human resources to be developed; and enriched recurrent education programs.

Why Kobe City in Hyogo Prefecture?

Kobe is one of the most promising business centers in the world, with the manufacturing and medical industries being prominently represented here. There are many company headquarters in Kobe, and many global corporations, such as Eli Lilly, P&G, Kobe Steel, Nestle, ASICS, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, have a large presence in the city. This is where the University of Hyogo is located: a dynamic urban center where both business and personal networks expand and fl ourish.

Kobe City developed as and remains an important seaport in Japan, which makes it a cosmopolitan city, rich in the cultural diversity of its residents. Kobe off ers an environment where people from all diff erent backgrounds can live harmoniously and comfortably together. For example, Muslims can practice their religion in Japan’s fi rst Islamic mosque, built in 1935, and halal food can be found in many shops and restaurants, as well as in the cafeteria of the University of Hyogo. Another example is Kobe’s Chinatown, located in the central downtown district, which is one of the major centers of the Chinese community in Japan.

Attending the University of Hyogo not only allows students to enjoy an almost carefree daily life, it also provides them with opportunities to learn about business models rooted in diverse cultures, and to build networks for the future.
