Walk This Way: Inno/Vention winner Tan Minh Vo helps people do just that with her invention,
VibroWalk. This insert estimates spatial orientation of the feet with a sensor-feedback system and
allows rehabilitation patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy or injuries to walk and drive
with stability. Since winning, she has continued to improve lives, helping to deliver over 120 free
surgical procedures for locals in Vietnam as a part of Resurge International.

NYU-POLY GRADUATE SCHOOL: FACULTY
George Vradis, head of mechanical engineering, discusses concentration options with Pablo J. Nagy Basente, a graduate student.
Jin Kim Montclare (top), professor and director of the NYU-Poly ProteinEngineering and Molecular Design Lab, mentors graduates as they genetically engineer protein polymers to change the face of healthcare. Elza Erkip (bottom), an IEEE fellow and associate professor, works closelywith NYU-Poly students in cooperative communications to make cell phones more effective. Maurizio Porfiri, one of Popular Science’s “Brilliant 10” and a frequent feature in science media, enlists student help to continue improving robotic fish that will herd others out of danger.
Richard Gross, professor of Chemical and Biological Science, is changing everything by turning yeast into bio-based plastics, which can then in turn be used as fuel, eventually replacing petroleum. Katherine Isbister, research director of the new CITE Game Innovation Lab and a Humboldt Research Fellow, decodes social gaming with student researchers. Masoud Ghandehari’s life work is sustainable construction and investi-gating different ways to recycle, repurpose, redesign and monitor concrete to make it eco-friendly.

A Material World: Specializing in surface chemistry, Jasmin works in NYU-Poly’s laboratories to
formulate new ideas. Like many programs at our school, Materials Chemistry is interdisciplinary
and practical, allowing her to apply properties of matter to various areas from engineering and
science. Jasmin has worked on reactive blood coagulation, testing chemical treatments on bio-
chips and more as she continues to improve the materials we will use in the future.

To better identify and define research areas, and increase our research profile, NYU-Poly has taken on the “Grand Challenges” of modern life.
THE FOUR GRAND CHALLENGES:
1. MAP, SECURE AND EXTRACT INFOSPHERE INFORMATION, CREATING MORE AGILE WAYS TO FIND AND INDEX WHAT WE NEED
2. CREATE INTELLIGENT SENSOR SYSTEMS THAT CAN MONITOR OUR RESOURCES AND AID IN REAL-TIME DECISION MAKING
3. ENGINEER SUSTAINABLE SMART CITIES TO CREATE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS THAT ARE SAFE FROM DISASTER AND PROVIDE ENHANCED QUALITY OF LIFE
4. TAILOR BIOMOLECULAR INTERACTIONS TO CREATE BIOMATERIALS THAT WILL BE “SMART” AND THERAPEUTICALLY AND BIOCATALYTICALLY FUNCTIONAL
