HISTORYIn1898,theDepartmentofPhysicalCulturewasestablishedattheUniversityofMaryland,CollegePark(UMCP),eventuallybecomingtheCollegeofHealthandHumanPerformance.Withacentury-long mission of promoting the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communitiesthrougheducation,research,policy,andpractice,theCollegehasmademajorcontributionstotheUniversityofMaryland,theStateofMaryland,andthenation.AstheUniversitycelebratedits150thyear,auniqueopportunityexistedtotransformourCollegeinto a School of Public Health. New and continuing threats to our nation’s health and securityunderscore the need for superior public health programs to train the future public healthworkforce, assess the health of individuals and their environments, and develop programs andpoliciesthathelpourcitizenstoleadhealthierlives. Guidedbythevisionofthedean,Dr.RobertGold,theSchoolofPublicHealthwasfoundedin2007andreceivedfullaccreditationbytheCouncilon Education for Public Health in 2010.We are the only accredited school of public health at apublicuniversityintheWashington,DC/Maryland/Virginiaregion,offeringanaffordableeducationwithoutstandingprofessionaldevelopmentopportunities.TheSchoolofPublicHealth(SPH)enablesustobuildonourtraditionofexcellence inpublicandcommunity health, kinesiology, and family studies to include health services administration,biostatistics,epidemiology,andenvironmentalhealth.TheSchoolofPublicHealthhasalsoallowedustoenhanceourgraduateandundergraduateprograms, increaseourinterdisciplinaryresearch,broaden our community outreach, diversify our faculty and student body, and fostermeaningfulpartnershipswiththegovernment,non-profit,andprivatesectors.

ACADEMICPROGRAMSACCREDITATIONANDREACCREDITATIONTheSchoolofPublicHealthbegantheCouncilonEducationforPublicHealthaccreditationprocessfor the first time in the springof 2007.TheCouncil examined the school basedon27 criteria toestablishoureligibility foraccreditation inOctober2010.Asof2015, theUniversityofMarylandSchoolofPublicHealthsuccessfullycompletedthereaccreditationprocessandisCEPH-accreditedthrough2022.Accreditation servesmultiple purposes for a number of constituents, ranging from students andfacultytouniversityadministrators, fromprospectiveemployerstoprospectivefunders includingassurance of quality education standards, self-evaluation against organizational benchmarks anddeterminationofeligibilityforfederalandotherpublicfunding.

DEPARTMENTSTheSchoolofPublicHealthoffersprofessionalMaster’s,PhDandcertificateprogramsinseveraldepartments.

DepartmentofBehavioralandCommunityHealth–Academicprogramsaredesignedtopromote the development of professional health educators who understand the science,theoryandpracticeofpublichealthandcanapplythisknowledgetowardtheenhancementof health status in communities. Graduateswill participate in both academic and appliedtraining in program planning and implementation, program evaluation, public policyanalysis,researchandmanagement.

DepartmentofEpidemiologyandBiostatistics–Studentsreceiverigoroustraininginthefundamental sciences underlying public health practice to improve health and reduceshealth disparities. Epidemiology provides the conceptual and practical tools necessary tounderstandthedistributionanddeterminantsofthevaryingratesofdisease, injuries,andother health states in human populations and design appropriate control measures.Biostatistics faculty empower students with the theory and techniques necessary todescribe,analyzeandinterprethealthdata.

Department of Family Science – Academic programs equip students with superiortherapeutic skills, ethical integrity, intellectual curiosity and a sincere commitment toworkingwithfamiliesfromdiversepopulations.Curriculafocusonfamilytheory,researchmethodology,programsandpolicyandclinicaltrainingandsupervision.

Department ofHealth Services Administration –Students develop a strong knowledgebase in health caremanagement, policy and health services delivery systems to improveaccess to health care, improve health outcomes, eliminate disparities and enhance theability of the health care system to respond to public health demands. Facultymembersrepresent disciplines includinghealth services, healthmanagement, economics, sociology,publichealth,publicpolicy,organizationaldevelopmentandpsychology.

DepartmentofKinesiology –Focusingon the interdisciplinarystudyofphysicalactivityand its complex role in human health, kinesiology brings together teachings fromphysiology,sociology,communications,history,engineering,educationandneuroscience.

MarylandInstituteforAppliedEnvironmentalHealth(MIAEH)–Thequalityofourair,water, foodandsoilqualityallhavedirect impactsonhumanhealth.MIAEHstudentsareintroduced to relationships between environmental exposures and health, applying andtranslatingresearchfindingsanddevelopingsoundenvironmentalhealthpolicies.

PracticalandCulminatingExperiencesAllgraduateprofessionalpublichealthdegreestudentswilldevelopskillsinbasicpublichealthconceptsanddemonstratetheapplicationoftheseconceptsthroughapracticalexperiencethatisrelevanttostudents’areasofspecialization.Aplanned,supervisedandevaluatedpracticeexperienceisanessentialcomponentofaprofessionalpublichealthdegreeprogram.Theseopportunitiescantakeplaceinavarietyofagenciesandorganizationsandshouldincludelocalandstatepublichealthagenciestotheextentpossibleandappropriate.Theseopportunitiesaremanagedbyeachdepartmentandhaveincludedpartnershipswithlocal,state,nationalandinternationalnon-governmentalagenciesandorganizations.SPHgraduatestudentswillalsodemonstratetheirpublichealthskillsandintegrationofknowledgethroughaculminatingexperience.Eachdepartmenthasdistinctexpectationsforaculminatingexperienceandmayincludeawrittenororalcomprehensiveexam,appliedpracticeproject,majorwrittenpapersuchasathesisorappliedresearchproject,developmentofcasestudiesandcapstoneseminars.Pleasecheckprogramspecificguidelinesformoreinformation.

TransferCreditStudentsmaybeeligibletotransferuptosixcredithoursearnedfromanotherinstitutionpriortoenrollingintheirSPHgraduatedegree-grantingprogram.Whenmovingfromnon-degreeseekingstatusatUMD,AdvancedSpecialStudiesstudentsmaytransferupto12graduatecreditstothedegreeprogram,subjecttotheapprovaloftheGraduateProgram.Coursestakenwhileenrolledthroughinter-institutionalarrangementsarenotconsideredunderthetransfercreditpolicy.PleasevisittheUMDgraduatecatalogforspecificpoliciesgoverningtheCollegeParkcampus.

Inter-institutionalRegistrationAny graduate student enrolled in a degree-seeking program with the approval of theirGraduate Program Director (other than students enrolled in the MPH in Public HealthPractice and Policy and those enrolled in certificate programs)may enroll in courses ontheirnon-homecampus.MPHandMHAstudents,inparticular,cantakeupto9creditsontheir non-home campus. These could be any of the basic core curriculum courses or anelectivecourse.

MarylandDayAnnually,UMDsponsorsacampus-widecelebrationofinnovation,creativityandacademicexcellenceofferingmorethan450family-friendlyeventsandexhibitsthatteachandinspirefuture innovators. This isMarylandDay. The 2016 event showcased the School of PublicHealth’s initiatives and commitment to improving health access and information in theMarylandcommunity.TheSchoolofPublicHealthanditscommunitypartnersofferedmorethan 25 events and activities, including a gymnastics exhibition by Gymkana, strengthtesting and other fitness challenges and health screenings for BMI, blood pressure,cholesterol,glucose,oralcancerandmore.
