The Canadian Studies Ph.D. program at Trent, the first of its kind in Canada, is a joint program designed for students keen to pursue research in an interdisciplinary context. This program is offered jointly by the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies at Trent University, and the School of Canadian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. It welcomes students interested in advancing the body of scholarly research that comprises Canadian Studies.

The Canadian Studies doctoral program has six broadly defined areas of concentration: Culture, Literature, and the Arts; Environment and Heritage; Policy, Economy and Society; Identities; and Women’s Studies. Students enjoy the benefits of working in close collaboration with faculty, while enhancing their knowledge of the field through the collegiality of student peers, research fellows, visiting speakers and invited guests. Students are based at Trent’s historic Traill College, a space that offers an excellent work and social environment.

Spanning the fields of archaeology, ethnohistory and art, while providing an excellent foundation in anthropological theories and research methods, the Anthropology M.A. is one of the longest-standing graduate programs at Trent. The program is staffed by an accomplished faculty whose award-winning research has secured Trent’s reputation as an outstanding choice for graduate studies.

Combining coursework, research colloquia and the writing of a thesis, the Anthropology M.A. provides a solid foundation for those moving onto their Ph.D. studies or who are pursuing a career in applied anthropology. Students interested in the program can explore a range of areas, including: the archaeology and ethnohistory of Canada, Mesoamerica, South America and the US Southwest; Old World prehistory; Mediterranean archaeology; Landscape archaeology; Mortuary archaeology; Archaeological method and theory; Canadian historical archaeology; and, the intersections of art with issues of gender, identity, beliefs, and social organization.

A challenging, interdisciplinary program that leads to an M.Sc. or M.A. degree, Applications of Modelling in the Natural and Social Sciences is a two-year program that delves into a broad realm of disciplines, including mathematics, computer science, physics and astronomy, psychology, physical geography, environmental resource science, chemistry, and economics. As scientific modelling continues to emerge and expand, Trent gives candidates the opportunity to pursue their chosen field while enriching their broader understanding of modelling through interdisciplinary research and coursework.

The program involves a number of modelling courses (program core courses) as well as two courses in a home discipline. While most of the program is based on a thesis research project and associated coursework, it aims to teach fundamental analytical modelling techniques required for research in a number of quantitative fields and to prepare students for a Ph.D. option, if interested. The opportunity to work alongside experts in the modelling field is further bolstered by the effort to share ideas with researchers in other disciplines and develop strong communication skills to better prepare candidates for the challenges of conveying their ideas and findings.

At Trent we foster a strong culture of student-faculty interaction while encouraging you to explore the boundaries of interdisciplinary study.

Trent’s Cultural Studies Ph.D. program builds on the long-standing reputation for excellence within the Cultural Studies department. This intensive four-year program gives candidates the opportunity to pursue independent, ground-breaking research in a vibrant and intellectually rigorous environment. The Ph.D. option is a perfect springboard to numerous professional careers as well as a range of alternatives in the academic realm, including art, film, theatre, literature, media, philosophy, music, history, and any number of emergent interdisciplinary programs.

Three fields form the basis of this doctoral program: Culture and the Arts; Culture and Technology; and, Culture and Theory. While the first year is devoted to giving students a proper grounding in the core background of Cultural Studies, years two through four focus on the development of a dissertation that interconnects three related intellectual projects. As with all graduate programs at Trent, there’s a strong emphasis placed on discussion and interaction among peers and faculty, and Ph.D. candidates are expected to present their work at scholarly conferences and submit at least one paper based on the dissertation projects for publications.

Trent University’s English Literature M.A. (Public Texts) explores how the production and presentation of texts in their many forms resonate within our culture’s political, economic and aesthetic spheres. Students in the program will investigate the history and the potential of Public Texts, including oral narratives, dramatic performances, and manuscript, print and electronic texts.

What distinguishes the M.A. program in Public Texts from other graduate programs is that students are given the choice of three degree options: thesis, major research paper, or internship. The internship option, unique to this program, provides students with an opportunity to develop texts for public distribution in co-operation with community-based organizations.

Whichever option students choose to pursue, the M.A. program in Public Texts provides outstanding training and education in areas such as the electronic production and circulation of texts; oral performance traditions; theories of publics; and the history of the book. Our graduates will have a number of career opportunities, ranging from information science, archival work, publishing and editing, to communications, journalism, and professional writing.

Since its inception in 1986, the M.A. based at the Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies has established itself as the foremost program of its kind. With Canada as both a subject and context for inquiry, the M.A. areas of study include: Canada in a global context; cultural heritage, literature, theory and the arts; environmental politics, policy and natural heritage; Aboriginal peoples; political economy, labour and community development; women and gender; identities and difference in Canada. Reflecting the breadth of the field itself, this multidisciplinary program draws upon the scholarly knowledge and expertise from the humanities, social sciences and other interdisciplinary fields.

Candidates select between a 12-month course and major research paper-based program, or a 24-month course and thesis-based option. Students can develop their own research possibilities under the guidance of their supervisor; or work as part of larger faculty research programs; or develop a community-based research initiative under the guidance of the Trent Centre for Community-based Education. The academic possibilities as well as the professional alternatives available to those who complete this program are as diverse as its mandate.
