The c e n t r a l t h r u s t o f t h i s course i s t o examine the n a t i o n a l debate on the charac ter and des t i ny o f African-Americans dur ing the years 1800-1 91 5. What was the r a t i o n a l e i n the wh i te psyche which condoned s lavery , lynchings, sexual e x p l o i t a t i o n and a na t i ona l p o l i c y which re legated the Black Community t o unwanted a l i e n s , c h i l d l i k e beings, o r beast o f burden? Why was i t necessary f o r the so-ca l led Negro t o be stereo- typed as subhuman? U t i l i z i n g the arguments presented by pro-s lavery, a b o l i t i o n i s t s , educators, s c i e n t i s t s , i n t e l l e c t u a l s , p o l i t i c i a n s and the media - t h i s course attempts t o analyze the Black image i n the w h i t e mind. CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES IN BIOLOGY

"Scientific creationists" revive the argument against the theory of evolution, and a debate i s held a t the University of Minnesota. A book i s published claiming the production of a cloned human, b u t the developmental biologists react negatively. Farmers engage in verbal (and sometimes physical ) bat t le with environmentalists over the "endangered" s tatus of wolves in Minnesota. A nobel 1 aureate argues the genetic infer ior i ty of blacks and geneticists reply.

The popular press abounds in a r t i c l e s relating to controversies related to biology. There are disputes between biologists and others as well as sharp disagree- ments among biologists. Several of the issues will be considered in th i s course including the following: Evolution; genetic engineering ( e .g. , cloning, recombinant D N A ) ; abortion; eugeEics and racism; 1 i f e on other planets and the environmentalist movement. Readings wi 11 be assigned and topics will be introduced by the instructors. There will be ample time for discussion and a number of guests will be invited to participate. As time and arrangements allow, a few f i e ld t r ip s may be taken. Students will concentrate on one topic as the basis of an oral ( i f possible) or written report. Eva1 uation will be based on the report , an examination relating to the topics considered, and class discussions.

Yalow's c o n t r i b u t i o n t o the area o f Physiology o r Medicine, s p e c i f i c a l l y the development o f the Radioimmunoassay (RIA), f u r t h e r emphasizes the importance o f the study o f radioimmunology.

BEHAVIOR OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

An introduction to the study of the typical exceptional ities exhibited by children and adolescents. The course will examine the causes, characteristics, and educational interventions for such exceptional i ties as mental retardation, language and communication disorders, vision and hearing impairment, physical disabi 1 i ties, learning disabilities and behavior disorders, and giftedness. The course wi 11 involve the student in readings, wri ttenloral presentations, and fie1 d trips to selected facilities for meeting the needs of exceptional individuals. Course requirements will be a paper accompanied by an oral presentation to the class on an exceptionality of student's choice (the research can deal with causes, characteristics, or edutational interventions) . The study o f o the r p lanetary atmospheres i s a v a r i a b l e ad junc t t o the study o f the e a r t h ' s atmosphere. By comparing observat ions o f t he d i f f e r e n t p lanets i t i s poss ib le t o ga in new ins igh ts i n t o the manner i n which atmospheric motions, f o r example, depend on the rate o f r o ta t i on of t he planets, on the d is tance f r o m the sun, and on t h e composit ion o f the atmosphere. Laboratory exerc ises and experiments w i l l be an i n t e g r a l p a r t o f the course.

NUCLEAR RADIATION PHYSICS: OAK RIDGE SCIENCE MINIMESTER

A study of nuclear radiat ion w i t h emphasis on applications and "hands-on" laboratory experience f o r the individual student. The course will consis t of (1 ) introductory work on radiat ion detection and measurement (physical science applications) a t Augsburg, ( 2 ) par t ic ipat ion in the 1979 Oak Ridge Science Minimester where the student has the opportunity t o design h i s or her course of study from projects i n nuclear radiat ion physics, radio- biology, radiochemistry, environmental radiat ion, radioecology, health physics, and radio1 ogi cal safety, and (3) summary and evaluation of the program back a t Augsburg.

The course i s a cooperative venture w i t h Oak Ridge Associated Universities--Professional Training Programs, and i s the only opportunity of i t s kind i n the United Sta tes . Two weeks of the course wil l be spent in Oak Ridge, Tennessee u t i l i z i ng the instructional s t a f f and laboratory f a c i l i t i e s of ORAU. These faci 1 i t i e s provide the opportunity f o r laboratory experience not normally available t o undergraduate students.

Time will be avai lable t o tour the area including the national laboratory and a l so special energy re la ted 1 ectures , featuring s c i e n t i s t s from the national laboratory, will be presented t o the Science Minimester Part icipants.
