Coach Beattie Feathers begins his fifth yearas head coach of the Wolfpack today and asusual his opponent is Wallace Wade’s DukeUniversity Blue Devils. Its a tough assign-ment for both Feathers and his entire newstaff of assistants as well as the 40 man Statesquad which you see below on the field. The State team was hit hard by ineligibilityin August when End Bill Stanton of Rowland,Tackle Jim Rees of Shelby, Ohio and FullbackLeslie (Footsy) Palmer of Cedar Grove, W.Va., were declared out of competition for 1948because of the completion of their three yearsof playing eligibility. All three of these menwould have been starters in the game today.Their loss has weakened the State squad im-measureably.But we are now breaking out the cryingtowel for the Wolfpack. Duke may be superiorin a number of ways. Their experience in boththe line and back field is probably equal toState’s in very way, but the Wolfpack is adetermined team. Their spirit will not be in-ferior in any way.Feathers staff. making its debut today, in—cludes Line Coach A] Rotella, a newcomer tothe coaching game from Paterson. N. J. Ro-tella gained valuable experience at the Uni-versity of Tennessee as an all-star tackle. Hehas won his way into the hearts of his line-men. He is a young coach. only 27-years old,but he has instilled in the hearts of his playersa determination to play their best.Backfield Coach Walter Slater is anotheryoungster in this coaching game. He hailsfrom Providence, RI. and last season was oneof the most promising backs in professionalfootball as a regular member of the PittsburghSteelers. Slater has to ‘know-how’ and is greatat passing along his personal experiences tothe men under his tutorlage. Slater is 28-yearsold. Slater is also a University of Tennesseegraduate.End Coach Charles W. Ramev is formerathletic director at Ashland (Ky.) Senior
High. He has had marked success as a prepschool mentor at Portsmouth and Wilmington,Ohio and at Ashland. In the Kentucky highschool in 1942 he won the state title and wasnamed “High School Coach of the Year.”Ramey is married, has two children and isregarded as a top end coach. He is a graduateof the University of Cincinnati. We’re justly proud of the Wolfpack squad, which State will field today. Guard CharlieMusser of Frankfort, W. Va. is a big cog inthe forward wall. He’s one of the leading line-men in the South and along with teammateBernie Watts of Girard, Ohio offers one.ofthe best guard combinations to be found inthis hot-bed of football. Both men are shoot—ing for All—Southern honors this year and pos—sible a crack at mythical All-American teamwhich will be selected later. Other top-notch-ers are Center Hal Saunders of Statesville,Blocking Back Bob Bowlby of Paterson, N. J.and Tailback Gwyn Fletcher of Winston-Salem.Riddick Stadium will be the scene of threeother top-notch grid encounters this season.Oct. 9 finds Davidson College’s Wildcats asvisitors to our turf for a night encounter. Theother two home clashes are with the Univer-sity of Virginia on Nov. 6 in a big home com-ing ocassion and Villanova College on Nov.27. Tickets are still available for all games atthe State athletic office in the Riddick Stad-ium Field House, but they’re going fast, so wesuggest you latch on to yours while the supplylasts. In passing may we note also that RiddickStadium has a ‘new look’ today and if you feelthat its to your advantage as a fan thanksare due State’s new athletic director Roy B.Clogston. who took over the post at the headof the Wolfpack’s athletic program on Aug.1. Clogston is a native of Ballston Lake. N. Y.and a graduate of Springfield College (Mass)He’s a welcome addition to the staff and weall wish him luck in his new post.

And so today we start another footballseason . . .What it will bring in the way of victoriesand defeats for Duke and N. C. State no onecan tell . . . We do know, however, that therewill be spills and thrills, gladness and heart—ache, surprise and disappointment . . . all ofwhich go with the annual fall madness . . .On the Duke team today you see severalboys who may be well up on the list when thefinal game with North Carolina rolls around. The Blue Devils are not strong in reserves andhave some spots where there are no standoutsbut in several places Coach Wallace Wade canfield boys who are good as they are inthe land. One of them is Captain Al DeRogatis, asecond All-American choice in 1946 who wasout most of last season due to a knee injury. The condition of that knee is not known andonly time can tell whether it will permit himto play for the Blue Devils this fall. This fel-low, one of the biggest boys ever to play for.Duke, is a true All-American performer and,at top speed. one of the finest tackles in thehistory of football.Another great is Louis Allen, the other Duketackle. He was slowed down by an injury lastseason but when he is in the best physicalshape, he cannot be beaten. Old timers com-pare Allen in all-around play to All-AmericanFred Crawford of the 1933 Blue Devils.A third is Fred Folger, Jr., the brillianttailback who last year ranked third in thenation in punting and was one of the top menin returning intercepted passes. His work inearly practices at Duke was terrific until hewas slowed down by an old ankle injury which

cropped out during the second week of drillsthis fall. He can carry the mail with the bestof them when in top shape, can throw, cankick and can defend.A fourth is Bill Davis, last of three brotherswho have all starred for Duke. Davis playsguard for the Blue Devils and he should beset for his greatest season this fall. He’s agreat running guard, is husky and fast andwill really crack ’em when they get in his way.As a whole, this Duke team is a young teamwithout great experience. Only three of theplayers today~DeRogatis, Allen and Quarter—back John Montgomery played much in 1946.The experience they gained last season shouldhelp but compared to other squads on the Dukeschedule, the Blue Devils are younger and lessexperienced. It is a big team in size but most footballteams in these days are loaded with largermen than was the case several years back. This series of football games between Dukeand N. C. State is a great one. It has furnishedas many thrills perhaps as any of the footballrivalries in the south. It has been a series fullof the unexpected. It has been one of greatupsets and of close scores.Today’s game should be no exception to thatrule. This looks like a ding-dong battle be-tween two teams which, as far as can be toldin advance, are fairly well evenly matched.Don’t forget that Duke and Tennessee andWade and Neyland resume their battling inDuke stadium at Durham next Saturday after-noon at 2:30 o’clock. North Carolina State College, the center oftechnological research and education in theSouth, began its 60th year of service with theopening of the current academic year.Chancellor J. W. The College and its allied agenciesreach many thousands of North Carolina citi-zens annually with their varied functions inagriculture, architecture, engineering, teachereducation, and textiles.Establishment of the institution was duelargely to the militant efforts of Col. From itshumble beginning, the college has marchedstraight ahead to take a position of leadershipamong the institutions of technology in theUnited States.State College has grown from its one build-ing in 1889 to a physical plant valued in ex-cess of $10,000,000 today, with a building pro-gram of over $6,000,000 now in progress. Theenrollment has advanced from 72 students—who reported to President Alexander Q. Holla-dav during the first academic year—to over5,000 today. The teaching faculty has jumped from Pres-ident Holladay’s original staff of 20 to approx-imately 441 now. Over 750 persons are nowemployed on the campus. Many agricultural, engineering, industrial, and textile leaders have joined hands to en-large the facilities and strengthen the facultyof State College through the foundations. Theyhave organized and are supporting the Agri-cultural Foundation, the Engineering Founda-tion, the Textile Foundation. and the DairyFoundation. These organizations are supple-menting State funds in paying the salaries ofmany top-ranking scientists. engineers, textileauthorities, and other leading educators andresearch men at the College.

COACH WALLACE WADE
Wallace Wade, Head Football Coach at DukeUniversity has one of the finest coachingrecords of all-time.Wade’s lifetime record—covering 25 yearsof coaching—is 185 victories, 43 defeats andten ties. His 13-year record at Duke is 93 vic-tories, 27 defeats and five ties. Of those 27 de-feats, 18 have been by the margin of onetouchdown or less. The consistency in his rec-ord can be illustrated in a comparison of hiseight years at Alabama and his first eightyears at Duke. At Alabama, he won 61, lost 13,and tied three. At Duke, over that period, hewon 61, lost 15, and tied three.Highest honor that can be attained by afootball coach came to Wade in the winter of1947 when he was named to the National Col-legiate Athletic Association football rules com-mittee representing the Third District. Hesucceeded W. A. Alexander of Georgia Tech. The NCAA football rules committee is theboss outfit of collegiate football, making allthe rules and the interpretations.
Wade matriculated at Brown University inProvidence, R. 1., electing to follow his brotherthere. He worked to defray part of his collegeexpenses and stories are told of how he walkedseveral miles to football practice in order tosave the nickels provided the players fortransportation. He played guard on the Brown team forthree years and was a member of the elevenwhich played against Washington State inthe Rose Bowl game of 1916. He therefore hasthe distinction of appearing in this historicpost-season classic, once a player and fivetimes as a coach. He accepted his first coaching position atthe Fitzgerald and Clark preparatory schoolin Tullahoma, Tennessee, and there producedoutstanding teams in a variety of athletics. His football teams won 15 games and lostthree during his two-year tenure. In 1921, he moved to Vanderbilt as assistantto Dan McGugin, remaining at that post fortwo years. Vanderbilt teams were undefeatedand twice tied over this two-year span.
