    Types of Questions

    There are four ,inds of uestions in n%lish/

    general, alternative, special, disjunctive.

    1. 0 general questionreuires the answer

    yes or no and is spo,en with a risin%intonation. eneral uestions are formed by

    placin% part of the predicate (i.e. the au4iliary

    or modal &erb) before the sub5ect.

    E.g. Do you study at the Academy?

    May I come in?

    Types of Questions

    2. 0 special questionbe%ins with an interro%ati&e word or

    phrase (6here7$ How7$ 6hy7$ How many7$ 6hat

    colour7$ etc.). The order of words is the same as in %eneral

    uestions but the interro%ati&e word or phrase precedes the

    au4iliary &erb. E.g. Where do you study?

    What treatment did the dentist prescribe?

    6hen a special uestion is put to the sub5ect or to an

    attribute of the sub5ect$ the order of words is that of astatement (i.e. no in&ersion is used). The notional &erb

    comes in the 3rd person sin%ular or plural.

    E.g. Who studies at the Academy? What causes caries?

    consists of two %eneral uestions connected by

    means of or.

    E.g. Are you a first ora second year student?

    affirmati&e statement followed by a ne%ati&e uestion

    or a ne%ati&e statement followed by an affirmati&e

    uestion.

    E.g. He is a student, isnt he?

    ou are not tired, are you?
