USE

We use the present continuous to talk about present activities: things happening now or around now.

I can't go out. I'm doing my homework.Are you studying for the exam?

FORMBE + VERB TO BE + -ING FORM

Affirmative form:subject + present simple of the verb to be + gerund (-ing

form)

She is sleeping. She's sleeping.They are cooking. They're cooking.

You can use full forms or short forms.

Negative form:subject + negative form of the present simple of the verb to

be + gerund

I'm not feeling well.He isn't working at the moment.

You aren't writing a letter.

You can use full forms or contracted forms as well as in the affirmative and interrogative forms.

Interrogative form:present simple of the verb to be + subject + gerund?

- Yes/ no questions:Are you leaving now? Yes, I am/ No, I'm not.

- Wh – questions:What is she doing now? - She is working.

SPELLING Be careful with spelling:When adding -ing to the infinitive, we have to consider these:- if the infinitive ends -e: This -e disappears:

come coming- if the infinitive has only one syllable and ends consonant +

vowel + consonant, we have to double the last consonant:plan planning

- if the final syllable of the infinitive is stress we double the last consonant too:

forget forgetting- if the infinitive ends -l, we double this final -l

travel travelling- final -y does not disappear
