YOUTH RECREATION PROGRAM PHILOSOPHYEvery Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation youth program is designed for the sole benefit of the child-participant. Each program has two goals. The first goal is to aid in the development of each and every child physically, emotionally, and socially. In all cases, it is recognized that each person is unique with specific talents, needs and problems. As a result of these differences, the Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation Commission offers programs that cater to the group’s needs while respecting and treating each participant as an individual. We hope that each person recognizes and respects the rights of every one involved.

Dear Resident:
On behalf of the Grand Blanc Parks and Recreation Commission, I would like to again thank the many businesses, organizations and individuals for their continued support in 2018 and hope you will consider us again in 2019. On a personal note, I want to thank so many in the community who have supported GBPR and me personally throughout my 34 years working here. I can’t possibly begin to THANK YOU enough!!
We continue to be appreciative of Township resident’s approval of our .25 millage request in 2016. We continue to work on upgrades at Creasey Bicentennial Park. In 2018 we started the construction of a new multi-purpose field that will benefit many user groups including junior football, lacrosse, and soccer. More projects will get underway in 2019 as well! I also want to take this opportunity to remind and encourage your continued participation in a program sponsored by the State of Michigan and the Department of Natural Resources called the Recreation Passport. When Michigan residents renew their license plates, they can opt to purchase a Recreation Passport for $11.00. The passport gives you free admission to any of the 98 state parks in Michigan for the year.
Once again we want to remind you to keep this booklet as it includes both Summer AND Fall programs to assist you in your Summer and Fall planning. Also, due to the numerous and generous sponsors of our booklet, we are again highlighting our programs with the GBPR logo / emblem.
The summer concert series at Physicians Park remains on Tuesday evenings and is scheduled to begin July 16th. In 2019, four popular acts scheduled for the Grand Blanc stage. Each week a variety of food trucks will be available to purchase snacks and dessert. So plan to come out and enjoy great music and great company and great food!
Have a safe and happy summer and THANK YOU for your participation in and support of GrandBlancParks and Recreation! And again, THANK YOU for your support over the last 34 years!

Grand Blanc Parks & Recreation Commission12 2019 SUMMER
& YOUR WATER BOTTLE!
Grand Blanc Parks & Recreation (GBPR) has implemented the following guidelines to deal with extreme heat at all youth based outdoor games, activities, and practices. It is designed to provide participants with a standard for safe play in situations of extreme heat.
The two values that GBPR will take into account when modifying or canceling games/activities/practices are air temperature and relative humidity. The combination of these two elements reflects the heat index. We will rely on the heat index reading that is updated hourly by the National Weather Service at Flint Bishop Airport.
GBPR has defined five heat index zones. These zones are based on recommended guidelines published by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) for participation in sports activities during periods of extreme heat. Because the heat index does not take into account wind and direct sunlight, two degrees will be added to the stated heat index on sunny and still days. Likewise, two degrees will be subtracted on cloudy and windy days.
Heat index of 65-80 degrees. In this range, the participant is in very little danger from heat and no special measures will be taken GBPR.
Heat index of 81-98 degrees. In this range, coaches/staff will be encouraged to take extra steps to protect their players by making sure they keep them hydrated and by encouraging frequent substitution during games and practices.
Heat index of 99-105 degrees. In this range, GBPR will implement the following at games: all measures taken in the Yellow Zone; water coolers will be available at each field complex for players/parents/fans; catchers will be allowed to catch only two innings in succession. If it is a practice day, coaches are instructed to keep players well hydrated and to take frequent breaks.
Heat index ranging of 106 to 115 degrees. In this range, GBPR will implement the following for games/activities: all measures taken in the Yellow and Orange Zones; the length of games will be modified according to the schedule below.
• Baseball, soccer, and softball grades Pre K- K – games will be reduced by 15 minutes
• Softball grades K-8 – games will be reduced by 15 minutes
• Lacrosse grades 5-8 – games will be reduced by 15 minutes
• Tennis/Track (All ages) games will be reduced by 15 minutes
If it is a practice day, coaches are instructed to reduce the time of practice, take frequent breaks and keep players well hydrated by having them drink water.
Heat index above 115. In this range, GBPR will cancel all games and practices until the heat index returns to 115 or below. Notification will be given through the website, gbparks.com, the rainout line, signage/Red Flag at the sports complex.
Note - During the course of the day, the heat index will rise and fall depending upon the time of day, amount of wind, cloud cover, etc. The above program modifications could also change throughout the course of the day, especially on a weekend. For example, a 1pm game on Saturday could be played under the Orange Zone guidelines and a 4 pm game could be played under Red Zone guidelines. Coaches and parents will be informed of the appropriate zone of play through signage at the game fields.
• Other outdoor activities such as tennis lessons, soccer camp, etc., will be modified by the instructor on site.
The above are merely guidelines and it is the responsibility of parents to make the ultimate decision as to the participation of their child in GBPR events when heat may be a factor, taking into consideration the age and physical condition of their child. Parents also have the ultimate responsibility to inform their child about the dangers of heat and need for protection, including sunscreen and proper hydration.

LOTS OF FUN!
GAMES!
Children learn healthy cooking skills, through fun and play, without the Chef Gordon Ramsey yelling! Each day of this 1-week camp, kids will make and eat a morning snack, get in some fun exercise activities, cook and eat a 3-course meal, learn basic gardening, play nutrition games, go on a nature walk, and end their day with yoga. Rata2ee teaches cutting techniques (with kid-safe knives), weights and measures, stove and kitchen safety, and sanitation. Kids also learn where food comes from and what makes a healthy plate. This well-rounded camp takes a holistic approach to healthy living. Each day starts and ends with a theme word that promotes character-building. Camps are taught by ServSafe Certified Chefs and teachers who already work within local schools. As part of the registration process, parents must sign a liability waiver for any child to attend. A week before the camp starts, an email with important information (like what to wear, what is ok and not ok to bring to the classroom, drop off and pick up information) will be sent. All recipes are nut free; however, all allergies must be listed on the registration/waiver form and will be followed up with a discussion with the chef prior to the session starting. Please note, there is no kids club (latchkey) available with this camp. Sessions are limited, so sign up NOW to get in with your friends!
