This was the third harvest of the new century to beginin August, compared to only one per century in theprevious few hundred years, but sadly an earlyharvest does not guarantee a generous crop.Producers are happy once again with the quality ofwhat they have made but not with the amount of winein their cellars.

Never before has Burgundy been so popular aroundthe world. With a succession of short crops, especiallyfor red wines, there is starting to be real pressure onavailability and pricing. Fortunately the slightstrengthening of the pound against the euro hasnegated almost all of the price increases from thegrowers, so pricing in sterling is largely stable.

We are delighted to offer for the first time several newproducers of the highest quality. Bénigne Joliet makesan astonishing wine at the 12th century Manoir de laPerrière. Another classical producer is FrancoisLabet’s Château de la Tour, made within theboundaries of the Clos de Vougeot, while we are alsothrilled to represent the dynamic Domaine Bachelet-Monnot who are producing some of the most excitingwhite wines in the Côte de Beaune.

The WeatherA moderately severe winter, though without the deepfreeze of the previous year, ended early and a finespring was ushered in from the middle of March. Thewind patterns were unusual, blowing mainly from thenorth (the benchmark wind on Palm Sunday), cooland dry – or veering right round to the south, warmand dry.

The first flowers were seen as early as May 10th,almost exactly the same as in 2007, and properlylooked after vineyards were bursting with health. There was a long term fear for the build up of droughtproblems however, especially if the season was todevelop along 1976 lines. But, as in 2007, May wasa little cooler than April and with a few more showers, occasionally storms. The village sages were talking ofa hot and stormy summer – apparently the magpieswere nesting close to the houses which they do whenstorms are in the offing!

Useful rain followed in early June rapidly followed by a hosepipe ban which immediately brought morerain and questions as to whether this could be thesame deteriorating pattern as 2007. The sun cameback with a vengeance at the end of June, flirting with40°C, and causing some grilling of the grapes. Thefirst week in July was dry too, bringing thoughts of1976 back into view. When it rained, solidly andevenly without stormy side effects on Thursday 7thJuly, the growers were thrilled but further rain over thenext few days was less welcome and the wholemonth of July proved to be cooler and wetter than usual.

Overall the season was less stormy than expectedapart from minor hail in Corton-Charlemagne (20thMay), Gevrey-Chambertin (23rd July) and Puligny-Montrachet, plus one really devastating storm inRully on 12th July following a more minor attack inJune.

August began clear and sunny but the July pattern ofshowery days returned with temperatures below orapproaching the seasonal norm. There was littlesustained rain except on Friday 26th with manygrowers starting to pick the following week in the goodweather which returned.

White WinesThe flowering in the white wine vineyards wasmore successful than the reds. Careful vigneronswho judged their picking dates intelligently haveproduced a healthy crop of delicious wines withsome flesh on the palate and good acidity, verynicely balanced for medium term ageing. They havethe fresh aspect of 2007 but a little more weight. Wecan report very good results from Mâcon andChablis as well. Another clear character of the year, for both colours, is how well the wines reflect thecharacteristics of their appellations and indeed theirvineyards. There is certainly admirable precisionoffered by many wines this year.

Red WinesThe flowering was less successful for the red vines andthe after-effects of the big freeze of December 2009continue to affect yields in the Côte de Nuits. In general the crop was the same, or very slightly morethan in 2010, which was well below average itself. The grapes were ripe to the taste but were lower insugar levels than in recent years, generating awelcome freshness. Though the growing season mayhave been similar to 2007, the wines are quitedifferent because the grapes had much thicker skins, offering greater density of fruit and more structure. No vintage comparison is exactly right, but there aresome parallels with the fine and fresh 2002 reds.

WhiteBourgogne BlancMade from grapes grown in vineyards just belowPuligny-Montrachet, this barrel-fermented wine is quiterich, yet it is freshened up by the lively, almost salinecharacter of the vintage. This is a very attractive wine todrink young. Drink 2013-2014.J0249B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £126.00

Maranges, La Fussière, 1er CruThe grapes for this wine come from the top of thevineyard on a cool chalky soil where the reds have littlecolour and do not ripen easily. Chardonnay is muchmore interesting on this site, as this wine shows withits lively fresh pear flavours, good body and impeccablelength. Drink 2014-2016.J0250B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £192.00

Chassagne-MontrachetThis is a delicious blend from several different plots. Ithas a fine, classy, steely character with fresh fruit andthe impression of stones running through, along with alittle touch of pineapple. Drink 2014-20177.J0251B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £270.00

Meursault, Clos du CrominThese grapes come from an early ripening site, indeedthey were the first to be picked this year, and half thevines are over 70 years old. The bouquet benefits from atouch of orange blossom while the wine fills out nicely onthe palate in true Meursault style. Drink 2014-2017.J0252B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £282.00

Puligny-MontrachetFine, elegant, stylish and balanced, this Puligny has afloral character with lovely nuances. The wine hasplenty of personality and impressive density. It is quiteperfumed with a long finish. Drink 2014-2017.J0253B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £288.00

Puligny-Montrachet, Hameau de Blagny, 1er CruThe attractive nose of this wine is skilfully overlaid with alittle sweet oak, but there is energy and disciplinebehind. It has excellent length too; the Hameau deBlagny vineyard is not well known but it is a good spot.Drink 2015-2018.J0255B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £420.00

Puligny-Montrachet, Les Referts, 1er CruSofter, richer and rounder than the Hameau de Blagny, this has lots of energy, exuberant fruit and a meloncharacter with some peachy notes. Some well-judgedoak helps to round out the whole. Drink 2015-2019.J0256B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £462.00

Puligny-Montrachet, Les Folatières, 1er CruThis is a notably powerful Puligny Premier Crucontinuing on the hillside from Chevalier-Montrachet,yet the undoubted weight of fruit does not mask the classand quality. Very small millerandé berries have given thiswine its excellent concentration. Drink 2015-2021.J0257B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £540.00

Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand CruOnly three barrels of this are made; it is a beautifulexample from the famous Grand Cru. The bouquetdemonstrates great class with beautifully precise, chiselled fruit. There is energy and freshness on thepalate too, but the class really shows in the immenseweight of fruit. The detail is hidden though while thewine is so young. Drink 2017-2024.J0258B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £750.00

RedBourgogne RougeThis bottling is derived mostly from declassifiedSantenay and Maranges grapes. It offers impressivelydense, relatively dark fruit with a robust texture and goodlength. This is far more than just a basic Red Burgundy.Drink 2014-2016.J0259B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £120.00

Maranges, Clos de la Boutière, 1er CruThis is one of the best vineyards in an area and itdeserves to be better known. The bouquet is sensual andstylish, yet very dense, with good acidity to help balancethe tannins. The length is excellent. Drink 2015-2019.J0260B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £162.00

Domaine Bachelet-MonnotThis relatively new domaine in the beautiful hilltop village of Dezize-lès-Maranges was established in 2005 by brothers Marc and Alexandre who come from vigneron stock on both sides of the family.By 2011, the domaine reached its current 23 hectares when their father handed over his vineyard holdings. In a few instances wines are made from purchased grapes where they have done the

vineyard work themselves.

Since starting out, Marc and Alexandre have cut down the proportion of new oak from 35% to 25% on average, varying from 10% for generic Bourgogne Blanc up to one third for the Grand Cru wines, and have stoppedusing lees-stirring as a technique. The white wines (two thirds of production) spend one year in barrel and then 6 to 8 months in tank on their lees.

Côte de Beaune

WhiteBourgogne BlancThis is a mix of the domaine’s wine from clay-richvineyards with purchased grapes from lighter soils. Thecombination works very well; it has a gently fruity noseand is a lovely elegant Chardonnay, very cheerful andquite long. Drink 2014-2016.J0171B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £120.00

Monthélie BlancWith a touch of bacon fat on the nose, this has lovelyweight and freshness on the palate and some charmingfloral qualities. With a fine finish, this is a delicious winefor drinking quite early. Drink 2014-2016.J0173B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £150.00

Bourgogne Blanc, Vieilles VignesThe fruit for this wine comes from Les Pellands and LesMillerands; both are very good Bourgogne sites whichare also partly in AC Meursault. There is some weight offruit on the nose and notable volume in the mouth withpowerful, almost sweet fruit, despite the wine beingtechnically bone-dry. This is a substantial miniMeursault with an excellent finish. Drink 2014-2017.J0172B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £156.00

MeursaultComprising an attractive mix of upper and lowerslopes, including Les Clous, Limozin, Crotots andCriots, this wine’s bouquet is already expressive. It is alovely rounded Meursault style which will becometypically buttery. There is perfect poise to the palate, enough mineral acidity behind and great balance.Drink 2014-2018.J0174B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £270.00

Meursault, Le Meix sous le ChâteauThis is a clay-rich site which catches the sun, producinga solid, satisfying, chunky Meursault. The good lengthindicated that this should age well. Drink 2014-2018.92586B 12 x 75cl bottles in bond £297.00

Meursault, Les ChevalièresThis has a really elegant, stylish nose this year. Flowerynotes and white fruit dance on the palate, which hassuperb intensity and a really long finish. It is a stepabove! Drink 2015-2021.J0175B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £195.00

Meursault, Le TessonRicher in style than Jean-Philippe’s Les Chevaliers, thishas some floral notes but also a great sense of weight. There is a touch of yellow fruit, and even a little tanninalongside the acidity. Quite frankly, this is a Premier Cruquality wine. Drink 2015-2022.J0176B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £210.00

Jean-Philippe FichetThe model here in Fichet’s ultra-meticulous cellars, near the Hôpital de Meursault, is forthe wines to spend one year in wood, with bigger barrels for the lesser appellations, and

then for them to be racked into tank for the second winter. We adore Fichet’s style of pure, energeticMeursault while even his Bourgogne Blanc tastes like a superior appellation.

It is ethereal, not powerful and simply apleasure to drink. Drink 2015-2021.J0169B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £195.00

Volnay, Les Lurets, 1er CruShining a deep full purple colour, this wine still needstime in barrel, but it will certainly go the distance. It isanother very stylish Volnay, but shows velvety fruit andgreater depth than the village wine. It is noticeably morebackward and with a firmer structure and impressiveacidity too. Dominique LafonThe wines under this label are made by Dominique Lafon in Meursault, in separatepremises from Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Though this label has négociant status, all

of the wines still come from vineyards owned or farmed by Dominique. The Bourgogne Blanc is asignificant acquisition this year, being part of the former Domaine René Manuel and, on the whole, this is alovely range of wines.

Pommard, Clos des Epeneaux, 1er CruThis is a brilliant wine, with a mix of vibrant red anddeeper black fruit notes. Dancing concentrated fruitcovers the acidity and tannins sublimely well. This is aPommard of exceptional energy as well as harmony.Drink 2017-2025.J0182B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £360.00

Domaine du Comte ArmandVolumes at Domaine du Comte Armand were broadly similar to 2010 in 2011, but willbe catastrophically low in 2012 as Pommard was one of the hardest hit villages with the

poor weather. We must therefore take advantage of Benjamin Leroux’s brilliant range of wines made availablethis year, from the supposedly lowly Aligoté upwards. Look out for the potential of the fabulous Clos desEpeneaux, which Ben has harnessed to a quality level rarely seen before.

Benjamin LerouxIt is extraordinary to see the calm authority that Benjamin Leroux exudes, running his very successful négociant business out of Beaune alongside his other job in charge of Domaine du Comte Armand. Most vineyards are picked by Benjamin’s team, or if not he certainly imposes his choice of picking date. After three years of working in a building site, everything is now properly in place and the future

looks rosy. Benjamin likes the purity of fruit in 2011.

Maison Camille GiroudThese are brilliant wines once again from David Croix and his team at Camille Giroud andfortunately they were able to make a little more wine this year than last. Alhough the white

selection is small, the wines are just as fine as the reds. David has made some inspirational wines from less-fancied appellations such as Maranges and Santenay, as well as majoring on the Grands Crus of Corton andthe Chambertins. Almost all of the wines are from purchased grapes, but somehow Camille Giroud feels to usmuch more like a domaine.

The fruit is on the cusp of red and black, suggesting ideal ripeness. It is a wine of both characterand quality. Drink 2015-2022.J0273B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £165.00

Domaine JolietThere are certain sites up anddown the Côte d’Or which have

been recognised for centuries as being outstandinglocations. The monks were usually the first to spotthe potential and to stake a claim. One such is theClos de la Perrière in Fixin, just north of Gevrey-Chambertin, founded by the monks of Cîteaux in theearly 12th century. Various early wine authorities inthe 19th century singled out Clos de la Perrière as anexceptional vineyard, Dr Lavalle (1855) noting it asa Tête de Cuvée, making wines which kept for longerthan any others of the Côte d’Or.

The Joliet family purchased the Manoir de laPerrière and its attendant vines in 1853. Bénigne, the 6th generation of the family, has moved towardsorganic farming in the vineyards, reduced yieldsand developed a style of vinification and barrelmaturation to suit this vineyard. From the 2009vintage the wines are aged for 24 months in barrels, half one-year-old and half two-year-old. The soil, high on the hill above Fixin, needs an extra week toripen the grapes, so Bénigne began on 13thSeptember, achieving 13% natural alcohol.

2011 WINES AT A GLANCECôte de Nuits

RedClos de Vougeot, Cuvée ClassiqueThis wine has a very classy nose, with precision anddistinction and just a touch of pepper on top of theluscious and heavily scented red fruit. There isdelicious flesh on the mid-palate; this is altogether avery beautiful wine with latent power and greatdistinction. Drink 2017-2025.J0264B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £375.00

Clos de Vougeot, Cuvée Vieilles VignesThese vines are now 101 years old! A team goesthrough the vines to pick the grapes off any youngerreplantings in the rows first so that only the fruit on theoriginal centenarian plants are harvested for this wine. Itis quite extraordinary with superb dark red fruit, a touchof liquorice, an amazing mass of ultra-concentrated fruitand absolutely astonishing length. This has hugeweight, without being clumsy and lovely spice, withoutlosing Pinot delicacy. Unmissable! Drink 2018-2028.J0265B 6 x 75cl bottles in bond 6 £600.00

Chateau de la TourThe Château de la Tour is to befound within the walls of the

Clos de Vougeot, where, with over 5 hectares, it isthe largest producer of this celebrated Grand Cru.The vines have been farmed organically since 1992and all the stems are used in vinification. This hasworked exceptionally well in recent years, perhapsthanks to fine tuning by the owner François Labet, perhaps because the stems ripen more consistentlynowadays with the effects of global warming. This isone of Burgundy’s great producers, and one which isnow starting to attract great critical acclaim.
