John 16:3

And these things will they do unto

you, because they have not known the

Father, nor me.

Jason King, October 2010

The Influence of Value Voters

Christian Voting Patterns

Christian Involvement

“You accused me of getting involved-that I shouldn't because I am a clergyman. I am a clergyman it is true. I am a member of society as well as the poorest of laymen. My liberty is as dear to me as it is to any man shall I then sit still? Heaven forbid it. I am convinced it is my duty so to do and duty I owe to God and my country”

~ John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg to his brother Rev. Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, 1776

Loss of Values Votes

• Over 50% of votes are cast based on 30 second TV commercials

• 1992 – 96: -17% drop of Christian voters• 1996-2000: another -23% more dropped off– Total of -40% drop over an 8 year period!

• The decline in electing righteous leaders brings the demise of righteous policies

• Proverbs 14:34 - Righteousness lifts up a nation, but sin is a shame to any people.

• Proverbs 29:2 - When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.

Evangelical Voting Patterns

• Defining “Evangelicals” (politically speaking):– Attend church weekly– The Bible is the way to live– Salvation through Jesus Christ

• There are more than 60 million Evangelicals in the United States– In 2000, only 15 million voted!– 24 million were not even registered!

2002 Election

• With all the effort to get the Evangelical voter turnout, we saw an increase of +2%

• 41% voted based on abortion issue• 23 % voted straight for Pro-life• 16% voted straight for pro-abortion• +7% advantage for a Pro- life candidate

Freshman Congress of 2002• Results:• 36 of 54 Representatives were Pro-life (67%)• 8 of 10 Senators elected were Pro-life (80%)

• A swing towards virtues• The most promising method of securing a

virtuous and morally stable people is to elect virtuous leaders! ~W. Cleon Skousen

2004 Election

• 28.9 million professing Christians voted• 42% voted based on abortion issue (+1%)• 25 % voted straight for Pro-life (+2%)• 13% voted straight for pro-abortion (-3%)• +12% advantage for a Pro- life candidate

• Moral Values was the #1 reason why people voted in 2004

Which One Issue Mattered Most in Deciding How You Voted for President?

• Anderson Cooper (CNN anchor): "Well, for months, the presidential campaigns and pundits have debated whether the driving issues of this election would be Iraq or the economy. Turns out it was neither. Moral values ruled this election, with 22 percent of voters citing moral issues as their No. 1 concern." [CNN, Anderson Cooper 360, 11/3/04]

• Dan Rather (CBS anchor): "Moral values -- we'll give you a look at the surprise issue that trumped the war, terror, and the economy as the decisive issue in the election." [CBS Evening News, 11/3/04]

• Paula Zahn (CNN anchor): "Tonight, it is the decisive issue, the one pollsters didn't see coming -- millions of people voting their moral values. ... The exit polls are quite stunning, at least to some folks looking at these numbers for the first time, when it appears that moral issues trumped just about every other issue on the map here." [CNN, Paula Zahn Now, 11/3/04]

Freshman Congress of 2004• 25 of 40 Representatives were Pro-life (63%)• 7 of 9 Senators elected were Pro-life (78%)• The 2 that were not Pro-life:

• Two election cycles of higher Christian voter turn out. Results:– Since 1973 not 1 pro-life policy passed until 4

were passed by this Class of 2004

Pro-Life Gains Ground

• Abortion dropped 24% since the adoption of these 4 major acts:– Infants Born-Alive Protection Act– Unborn Victims of Violence Act– Partial-Birth Abortion Ban– Fetal Farming Ban

• There were 170 pro-life votes in that time period!

2006 Election

• There was a -30% drop in Christian voter turnout

• 20.5 million compared to 28.9 million (2004)• In Comparison:– Homosexual men that voted in 2006: 92.5%– Lesbian women that voted in 2006: 91%

• Complacency• Major change in philosophy

Freshman Congress of 2006

• 17 of 54 Representatives were Pro-life (31%)• 1 of 10 Senators elected were Pro-life (10%)

• “the most pro-choice Congress in the history of the Republic” ~ February 28, 2007

2008 Election

• 34.1 million professing Christians voted– A 66% increase over 2006

• Only 6 % of Evangelicals voted straight for Pro-life– Down from 25% in 2004 election

• Economy was the #1 issue (49%)• Pro-Life (6%)• Traditional Marriage (3%)

How Did This Happen??

• There was a concerted effort to go after Christians in America in 2008

• “Social Issues, Social Justice, Social Gospel”– This movement glorifies social issues of the poor,

healthcare, social security, welfare, free schooling, etc. – all in the name of Jesus!

– Sounds good and biblical to most, yet the precepts are anti-biblical

– Pity is their moral virtue. False compassion is the reality

Social Justice

• Interestingly, none of the “virtues” of the Social Gospel movement are in God’s Top 10!– but marriage protection, property rights/ protection,

not shedding innocent blood, etc. are!– These are the non-negotiables according to GOD!

• There are 205 verses in the Bible about the poor. – Only 1 was addressed to the government to take care

of• The government can’t “fix” these issues!

Our Current Crisis in America

• Proverbs 14:34 - Righteousness lifts up a nation, but sin is a shame to any people.

• Bad national policy– Yet only 7% hold Obama’s far left view on abortion– And 66% disagree with his views on marriage

• Faith based– Prison: 68% of convicts return, only 8% in

faith-based– Drug Rehab: Government = 20% cure rate

Faith-based = 70% cure rate

Why is the Issue of Life so Important?

• Unalienable Rights = Life, Liberty, Pursuit of Happiness, etc.– Endowed by their Creator

• With consistency, beautiful and undeviating, human life, from its commencement to its close, is protected by the common law. In the contemplation of law, life begins when the infant is first able to stir in the womb. By the law, life is protected ~ James Wilson, 1792

• “Life” issues tell you everything about a candidate 95% of the time

Proverbs 6:16-19• :16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an

abomination unto him:

• :17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

• :18 A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

• :19 A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

Elect Virtuous Leaders

• Exodus 18:21 - …thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness (unjust gain); and place such over them, to be ruler…

• “The power under the Constitution will always be in the people. It is entrusted for certain defined purposes, and for a certain limited period, to representatives of their won choosing; and whenever it is executed contrary to their interest, or not agreeable to their wishes, their servants can, and undoubtedly will, be recalled.” ~ George Washington, 1787
