Experience helps students take ownership

Written by Lucas Schrauben, Grand Ledge High

Schoolteacher.

As educators continue to create successful strategies to

challenge students and engage them in their learning, onemotivating way we can promote innovation and self-ownership is through entrepreneurship. Peter Druckerfamously said “one way to predict the future is to createit.” That is exactly what students at Grand Ledge HighSchool are getting a taste of this year in theirEntrepreneurship course.

As a former entrepreneur in college (I started anadvertising publication “for students by students”) andthen as a district manager for an international grocer aftercollege, I have experienced how an entrepreneurial spiritcan set people apart in their profession. Specifically, thatspirit includes the unique ability to take an exciting ideayou have and create a vision, develop a plan of action, implement a process to effectively move your ideaforward, all the while maintaining a positive attitude andpassion to see it through.

I believe that expanding opportunities for students to learnabout entrepreneurship in high school empowers them tomake an impact on their area of interest after high school. Moreover, it can spur them to think about their collegemajors or career objectives entrepreneurially, rather thanrelying on traditional paths in their chosen fields,

something that is important in today’s rapidly changing jobmarket.

The Entrepreneurship class at Grand Ledge High Schoolis rooted in student ownership. The class is as a capstonecourse for our business department, which offersaccounting, web design, and an award-winning marketing class. This course is a simulated business environment.Under the guidance of a teacher, the student’s partner withlocal business leaders to create and manage business ventures while strengthening academic skills. With anemphasis on college and career readiness, students begin

the year interviewing for their positions within the class Those interviews are conducted with school administratorsand community volunteers (thank you the Grand LedgeBusiness Alliance and Grand Ledge Rotary Club for theirhelp and support). After the interviews, the class isorganized into teams: human resources, accounting, salesand marketing, and web design. It runs much like abusiness would.

This format allows for leadership positions within theclass. For example there is a CEO, a CFO, and a CAO who oversee vice presidents for each department and work with the teacher to deliver monthly task lists and meetdeadlines. I have teamed up with Virtual EnterpriseInternational and Junior Achievement to deliver thiscurriculum. The VEI network provides students with anonline platform to compete in a virtual economy withmore than 5,000 other schools internationally. Althoughnone of the money and items exchanged are real, thestudents take a sense of ownership in their product line website, sales, and business nonetheless.

This program allows students to experience all facets ostarting and running a business, including writing abusiness plan, product development, productiondistribution, marketing and sales. This workplacesimulation provides an environment for students todevelop soft skills that will be crucial in any industry. Theinteraction and teamwork to accomplish goals is essential.

As a teacher, I am passionate about this class because ofthe response I have seen in my students so far. I made thecareer change from the business world to education to

make a positive impact on young people and help themcreate a passion for their future. This class has been a grea way for me to do just that. My students are excitedconfident, and ready to compete. I have witnessedstudents who normally are shy and reserved embracepublic speaking, leadership roles and push themselves tostep out of their comfort zone.

Teaching Entrepreneurship helps talented young adultstake ownership of their futures and create something theyare proud of, which brings a big smile to my face!
