Nominees

James Boydston, President of Handi-Lift Inc., in Carlstadt, NJ. James is the third generation of the Boydston family owning and operating Handi-Lift, which was established in 1975 by his grandfather and father, Donald and Doug. James has worked in nearly every role at Handi-Lift, from the warehouse to installation, maintenance and sales, and now as president for the past five years. James is currently on the Board of Directors for AEMA and serves on the New Jersey Elevator Mechanics Licensing Board. He has also served on the Education Committee for NAEC for over seven years. James strongly feels that the education and training of technicians must be prioritized in the industry. “A strong, intelligent workforce is critical to the safety and performance of our equipment.” James and his wife Amy have one 10-year-old son, Elijah. When not at work, he volunteers with his church board, neighborhood association, and in political campaigns. James relaxes by enjoying the outdoors, hunting, or staying inside watching YouTube.

Hope L. Evans, Co-Founder, President, and CEO of EMR Elevator, Inc., in Arlington, TX, has held the position for the past 25 years. Her previous 15-year tenure at a worldwide corporation, led her and the Co- Founder to grow the company to become the largest Independent elevator service company based in Texas. One of Ms. Evans’ company’s projects was recently highlighted in Elevator World Magazine as well as having won an “Ellie Award” as the Best Woman Owned business in the Elevator trade, by Elevator World Magazine popular vote in 2018. Ms. Evans’ philosophy is to always work toward the goal to maintain the integrity of the trade, and to continue improving technology and processes, while ensuring the customer always obtains the service they are contracted for and deserve. She strongly believes your word is your bond, no matter which side of the labor force an individual is on, and that integrity should be foremost in business and in life.

Rene Hertsberg, CFO & General Counsel of Urban Elevator Service in Cicero, Illinois. Rene is a licensed attorney, having earned his degree from Emory University School of Law. Prior to joining the industry, he was engaged in private practice with a specialty in commercial litigation. Working in the independent elevator service contractor world, Rene’s legal background has given him a unique perspective. He is second generation in the industry and officially joined Urban Elevator as its General Counsel in 2011. In 2012, he spent six months in the field under the IUEC management trainee program. Rene quickly became integrated in many aspects of the company’s administrative apparatus thereafter. In his role, Rene has overseen a number of initiatives including expansion into other markets and roll out of standardized safety policy manuals. The perspective afforded by his experience has convinced Rene that the elevator industry writ large needs more incentive to push

standardized continuing education & safety training. It shouldn’t be left to large international corporations to drive progress in our industry. NAEC could use its platform to encourage positive change among all its members, large and small. Outside of Urban Elevator, Rene maintains an active role in the Elevator Contractors of America trade association. Rene and his wife, Dominika, have one son, Ari. He spends most of his free time doing CrossFit training or traveling with his family.

Jeff Eaton, President of Lift Business Advisors Inc., in Danville, CA, began his career in the elevator industry in 1989. In 13 years with Otis Elevator, he succeeded in a range of roles including Deputy General Manager for Otis in St. Petersburg, Russia; Branch Manager and Regional General Manager positions in California; and Director, New Equipment for the UK and Ireland. Jeff also worked 10 years for KONE Elevator, first as the Country Director for Russia, and then as Director for Mergers & Acquisitions for the Americas, prior to joining Lift Business Advisors in 2014. Jeff has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management; a B.A. in Economics from Hobart College; and is a Certified Valuation Analyst from the NACVA. Jeff enjoys tennis, hikes with his dog, volunteering and spending time with his three children who are now young adults.

Cece Matot, President and 4th generation owner of Matot, Inc., in Bellwood, IL. She has worked at Matot, Inc. and in the elevator industry since 1986. Cece began her career at the company in Production, moved from there to Inventory control and then to Purchasing. From Purchasing, she went back to Production to run the shop floor for four years. She then transitioned into Marketing and Management after receiving her MBA. Cece is an active, founding member of the Loyola Family Business Center in Chicago. She is passionate about family businesses, the role they play in the U.S. economy and more importantly, the elevator industry. Cece and her husband, Jack Hartman, have 2 adult children and live in Chicago. In her free time, she enjoys alpine skiing, scuba diving, hiking and bridge.

I n 19 7 3 , J o e Marchese, Gene Frohlinger, Gi l Basso, and Jordan Danziger, four elevator icons, united together to begin a fundraiser that would play a major role in the

Elevator Industry to this day. Their first charity event, held at the Bellport Country Club in Bellport, NY, was called “The Galliano Open” and raised $1,000.00. The committee donated the raised funds to The National Kidney Foundation. Sometime later, Gil Basso was replaced by John Cartolano.

After the passing of Pop Frohlinger in 1979, the outing name was changed to the “Pop” Frohlinger Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament.

The 1992 Pop Frohlinger Golf Tournament was the first event ever played with the proceeds benefiting the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF). Joe Marchese, who had then served as an EESF Board member, brought the idea to the organizing committee and received an immediate agreement. Gene Frohlinger remarked, “Pop was a short man, but he would be 10 feet tall to know we’re supporting safety in the industry.” That event proved successful as 112 individuals played, ate, bought raffle tickets and participated in 50/50 drawings to ultimately net US $13,121.

In 1997, a new name was added to the Outing, with the passing of tournament founder Joe Marchese. The 24th

Annual Tournament was renamed Pop Frohlinger/Joe Marchese Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament. Outings are held annually to honor the memory of two of the elevator industry’s most distinguished members, “POP” Frohlinger and Joe Marchese. Through the years, POP Joe is proud to have donated close to a million dollars to the EESF assisting with educating our children and grandchildren on the safe and proper use of elevators and escalators.

In 2000, the committee decided to start a tradition and honor someone from the industry who had integrity, honesty, the respect of others in the Industry, made a contribution to the Elevator Industry and who was loved by all. That year the 1st honoree was Gene Frohlinger.

This year’s Honoree was Teresa Witham of NAEC. Joel remarked, “We chose Teresa as the Honoree for 2019 because she has dedicated the past 30 years to the Elevator Industry and has made countless contributions to the Industry, making the NAEC the great organization it is today. She is exactly what the Gene Frohlinger Distinguished Service Award is given for – honesty, integrity, hard work, making our Industry better and being a beloved member of our Elevator Family. Most of all, Vinnie and I consider her a good friend, colleague and one of the GOOD people in this world!”

“As the new Executive Director, I was proud to be able to attend this important industry event and be there for Teresa as she received this award. It was an amazing day and, having worked with her for going on three years now, could not have been happier for her!” ~Alesa G. McArthur

We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations Teresa!

New Vantage Regional Service Center Opens Doors in New YorkOn June 11th, Vantage hosted a grand opening of the new Vantage Regional Service Center at their GAL Manufacturing location in the Bronx, New York. The event drew a crowd of more than 70 customers, suppliers and partners who all joined in the celebrations. Guided tours of the facilities were accompanied by a barbecue, a meet and greet, and musical entertainment – followed by a visit to neighboring Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees take on the Mets.

The Vantage Northeast Service Center is the latest in a string of regional Vantage hubs to open across North America, where each location serves as a key outlet for the whole suite of Vantage products. In addition to a warehouse stocked with a wide range of spare parts, these centers also provide local resources for sales, engineering, training, and overall support.

Eric Lazear, Regional Vice President of Vantage Northeast, is excited about the benefits the service center will bring to the region. “This is a great opportunity for us to better serve Vantage customers here in New York City and throughout the Northeast,” he explains. “Having a central location for products from GAL as well as from Hollister-Whitney, Courion, Elevator Controls, and Bore-Max, makes life easier for everyone. It means we can get products to customers quicker, as the whole logistics process becomes smoother and more convenient.”

The new Service Center is now officially open for business and can be found on 153rd Street in the Bronx, immediately adjacent to the North entrance of the GAL Manufacturing plant. Its operating hours are are Monday – Friday from 7:00am – 4:30pm, and the regional service team can be reached at (646) 847-6627, or by emailing Eric Lazear direct at [email protected].
