Back to NatureKate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, as part of her campaignto encourage children to play outside, has initiated the move todevelop ‘Back to Nature’ gardens equipped with facilities thatwould fascinate the child to engage in physical activities. Playingoutdoors should be a vital part of every kid’s earlydevelopment. Besides boosting physical and mental growth, it alsohelps the child to learn various life skills: a great chance for kidsto run, jump, make a mess, explore their self in natural surround-ings.With the advent of modern technology, children these days arespending more time on their iPads, Nintendos or in watching tele-vision. Scientists, doctors, mental health experts, educationalists, sociologists from across the globe have been professing the needto allow children to go out into the natural world. This, they stress, not only helps in their development, in terms of physical and men-tal, but also that of the society as a whole.Unfortunately, children these days do not appear to have sparetime as well. The parents, in their eagerness to make their wardsexcel in every sphere, lay more emphasis on after-school activi-ties, coaching, organised sports etc. Due to this, children havereally no time to do activities like climbing trees, building dens, playing in the mud etc. which used to be the regular fun activitiesof the children in the earlier days. Moreover, living in a nuclearfamily makes it all the more difficult to let kids go out and playwhile ensuring they are safe and sound under adult supervision.Hence, digital technology becomes the easiest and the only op-tion for parents to keep their kids busy with something while theyget busy completing their never-ending office or householdwork. But this is taking a huge toll on their health. Obesity is per-haps the most visible symptom of the lack of such play.As per the studies conducted worldwide, by spending just few min-utes with nature can help in improving mental wellbeing and self-esteem. Free and unstructured play in the outdoors boosts prob-lem-solving skills, focus and self-discipline. Socially, it improvescooperation, flexibility, and self-awareness. Emotional benefits in-clude reduced aggression and increased happiness.Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the widerworld, but also themselves. Let them learn how to take respon-sibility and how to measure risk for themselves. Children arethe future of our nation. Let us all play a conscious and proactiverole in developing a positive outlook toward outdoor games orsports among kids.

Union MinisterNitin Gadkari defendedhefty fines under thenew Motor Vehicle Act,saying the govern-ment’s intention wasnot to impose heavy pen-alties on people but tobring road discipline forpreventing loss of livest h r o u g haccidents. Implementationof these traffic laws canbring down the roadaccidents considerably. These laws are compul-sory by dealing outchallans in the name ofthe lawbreakers, whichwill motivate them tointernalize the law.

India is the secondlargest market for two-wheelers in the world.Being so close to lead-ership in terms of num-bers and with two-wheelers being the pre-ferred mode of trans-port for over a hundredmillion Indians, onewould tend to thinkthat enforcement of ba-sic safety laws would bestringent. A helmet isthe most basic, simpleand yet effective safetydevice that a two-wheel-er rider can use to pro-tect him or herself. emphasized. The newrules enable state gov-ernments to designateany person /agency asthe enforcement agen-cy to detect and imposea penalty on overload-ed vehicles.

Stressing on theneed to have strictpenalties for trafficnorms violations,Gadkari has rightlysaid that “In thecountry, there are fivelakh accidents hap-pening each year, around 1.5 lakh peopledie. Should we notsave these lives? Ifthere is no respect forthe law of the landand there is no fear aswell, then it is not agood thing”. With theincrease in thenumber of Roadaccidents wearing agood helmet is anabsolute must, even ifit is uncomfortableduring peak summermonths and even if

the two-wheeler isbeing taken out to thenearby place. The rateat which the numberof two-wheelers inIndia is rising is 20times the rate atwhich the humanpopulation is growing. In such a scenario, fatalities are onlygoing to rise if thingsdo not change fast. Astudy has found thatindividuals wearing ahelmet withoutchinstrap sufferedsevere injuries in roadaccidents more thantwice as compared toindividuals wearing astrapped helmet.Accident victims whohave had serious headinjuries rarely getback to normalcy evenafter surgery. Natural hair care iswhat you need to turnto if your hair has beenexcessively coloured, straightened, bleached,or damaged in any way. Before you start mak-ing use of some of thesenatural hair care prod-ucts, consider thesetips: Make sure you areusing the right sham-poo. Always get a sham-poo that is suited foryour hair type. We onlythink of hair wash, con-ditioners and the likewhen it comes to haircare, but there is somuch more. Paying at-tention to hair texturemakes a lot of differ-ence, for, each type —oily, dry and normal —requires a differenttreatment.

The first step inhair care is regular cut-ting, which not many ofus do, and continue toworry about hair fall, thinning and dry ends.Regular cutting is asimportant as washing;it makes the hair evenand healthy, and pre-vents split ends.

The next step iswashing. Regular

washing is the best forany type of hair. But,it’s not about using anexpensive shampoo;choose a shampoo ac-cording to the hairtype, irrespective of thebrand. A lot of hairproblems can be solvedby choosing the rightshampoo. Ideally, hairmust be washed everyday; it makes the scalphealthy. Those with dryhair can wash it everyother day.

The final step is con-ditioning. There areconditioners for differ-ent types of hair, so becareful about the oneyou use. After shampoo-ing, the conditionermust be applied only onthe hair, without touch-ing the scalp. It shouldbe done regularly forall types of hair, as itgives a coat to the hair, makes it smooth, andprotects it from the sunand pollution. Hair se-rum or leave on is oneof the best conditioners.

Use the right hairproducts and plenty ofconditioner. Condition-er will help hair main-tain its elasticity and

movement. A deep con-ditioning hair treat-ment every week is ide-al; it helps hair remainsoft and gorgeous. Stylehair using volumisingmousse, to make it ap-pear more glamorousand healthier. Healthylooking hair is the eas-iest to work with — itis easier to style andmaintain, and has bet-ter movement andbody.

Dry hair complete-ly before going out inthe cold. The cold willaffect hair, so blow dryon the cold setting.Use a thermal protec-tion spray if in ahurry and if usingheat to blow dry hair.Do not put on hairaccessories right afterblow drying, becausethe hair is still warm, and will instantly cooland take the shape ofthe accessory. Takegood care of your hairand stay stylish.Always remember, hair can make a bigdifference to yourappearance.

Letter to the Editor....

RIP Ram JethmalaniDear Editor,With the passing away of Ram Jethmalani on

September 8, 2019, India has lost an eminent ju-rist, an able administrator and a seasonal Parlia-mentarian. Ram Jethmalani was a vetarian lawyer and a former UnionMinister. He was witty, courageous and never shied away from boldlyexpressing himself on any subject. He will always be remembered withaffection by the Indian public whom he served with such honour anddedication.

Jubel D’Cruz, Mumbai.

Need for a concrete policyGrowth of any city is synonymous to its industrialization and

economic development. The huge man power needed for sustain-ing this development process actuates the rural urban shift lead-ing to migration from nearby rural areas. Most of the times thecity is not able to provide the basic amenities required for livingto this migrating population, who then seek shelter in the slums. These squatter settlements or slums are in fact the by-product ofuncontrolled urbanization. The slum population keeps multiply-ing at a very high rate and more mouths to feed than hands toearn, lead family members especially the children, either intocrime or begging. These are two fields which do not require anysort of investments and are a source of easy money.

Navi Mumbai too has become the hub of such activities. In-fact the population of beggars is increasing at such a rapid pacethat it looks very soon Navi Mumbai would soon earn a new nick-name for itself that of the “city of beggars”. One encounters beg-gars on almost all the traffic signals, outside hotels and restau-rants, near ticket counters of railway stations and outside reli-gious places. The beggars and eunuchs seem to get some sort oftraining to extort money from the vehicle owners who stop at thesesignals. They in a very adamant manner coax and cajole peopleto dole out money. If someone refuses to pay, they dare to abuseand even try to inflict damage on the vehicles in their bid to showdispleasure. If a person happens to be travelling in an auto rick-shaw, they create embarrassing scenes by touching feet, beggingwith folded hands, displaying empty stomachs and sometimes byeven crying, in turn forcing the person to yield and give alms.Apart from this, these beggars along with the vendors pose agrave accident threat as they continue with their business with-out caring for the traffic and the onus for their safety lies with thevehicle driver.

The police should take steps to curb these illegal activitieswhich apart from creating shabby scenes are also accident haz-ards. In spite of all the noise made by the media, the warninghas been ignored time and again. Efforts should be made by theauthorities to persuade these people to slog for earning theirlivelihood rather than resorting to easy money making throughbegging. CIDCO/ NMMC should construct “beggars home” andcan take the help of the various NGOs, social organizations inrunning them. There are organizations which are doing commend-able work by providing education, skill training programmes tostreet children, vagabonds etc. There is the need to encouragesuch philanthropic organizations to be able to prevent creatingparasites on the society.

Today is Mahalayaarambh, widely knownas Pratipada Shraddh.(A Vidhi before DurgaPuja). An auspiciousday too for all Hindus, when those who are nomore in all Hindu fam-ily, Shradha is per-formed to give rest tothe departed soul. Eventhose who can afford goto “Gaya” and performthis ritual, which giveseternal relief to the de-parted soul. After thisritual it is not neces-sary to perform furtherrituals. One gets “Mok-sh”.

Your creative ener-gies are making yourestless and you arelike a bubbling volcanowaiting to burst forthwith new ideas. This isa good time to identifythe most workable ones

and then set down ac-tion plans to achievethem. You may have togo beyond your comfortzone to make substan-tial progress but youare not one who shiesaway from hard work. You now have learnt totemper your self-confi-dence with patience andgoodwill and are lessbrash. So people don’treally resent your spec-tacular successes. Thesame dedication may berequired to handleevents at home but TheLord Almighty guidesyou out from tight sit-uation.

If you have been sol-itary for long or notcommunicating toomuch with others, thisis the time to come outof your shell and facethe real world head on.

This is the only way toresolve matters thatseemed in surmount-able. Working togetherwith close associateswill provide exponentialgrowth. Whether it isco-workers, bosses orsubordinates, yourspouse/partner, childrenor even extended fami-ly, you will have to workout a win-win agenda. There is a danger of ac-cidents due to careless-ness or absentminded-ness at home/workwhile travelling. can often turn out tobe accident-causingdistractions.

The enforcement ofsafety laws such as acompulsory helmetuse tends to beextremely lax in manyparts of the country.Two-wheeler ridersare almost twice aslikely to be injuredgrievously from anaccident as comparedto car passengers.Unfortunately, thereare many two-wheelerriders who choose toride without a helmet.Statistics shows thatcompliance, even inStates where acompulsory helmetlaw exists, tends to belower amongst wom-en. There are innu-merable stories of roadfatalities, which couldhave been avoided ifthe riders were withwearing helmets.

The third key part

of the helmet is thecushioning. Highquality sponge andwoven cloth is used tocreate padding for cov-ering the key areas ofthe head that are proneto injury in the eventof a fall. The keysspots that are swad-dled by the cushioningare the temples, ears, back of the head andthe area just below theeye-sockets. The lastcomponent of the hel-met that is equallyimportant is the re-straint or clasp thatholds the helmet inplace around the wear-er’s head.

There are fewmyths that arecommonly associatedwith wearing ahelmet. Some thinkthat it leads to hairloss but there is noscientific proof forthis. Some think thata rider is not able tohear properly but infact helmets help riderto hear well by cuttingwind noise. It pre-

vents neck injuries inthe event of fall, thuspreventing fatal headinjuries is far muchmore important thanpreventing neckinjuries. The risk ofdeath is nearly 2.5times more amongriders not wearing ahelmet compared withthose with ahelmet. Amonghelmeted patients, only 4.8 per centsuffered severe headinjuries, compared to23.7 per cent withouthelmet patients. Onlyfull coverage helmetswere effective inpreventing headinjury. People do notrealize the seriousnessof the issue unlessthey getvictimized. Societyshould be concernedabout whether a two-wheeler rider uses ahelmet or not.
