West Michigan Public Television Tops Goal WGVC/WGVK, Channels 35/52

ended their March membership drive successfully, with pledges totaling $505,005-­more than $5,000 over their goal of $500,000. The total set a new record at the station, surpassing the previous record of $502,276 set during Festival '85, last March.

"We're absolutely delighted with the response of West Michigan viewers," said Director of Development Phil Fleming. "Of all the public stations in Michigan conduct­ing membership drives, WGVC/ WGVK went the farthest over its goal."

With 70 percent of public television stations nationwide reporting final figures, WGVC/ WGVK's average gift of $83.79 was the second highest in the nation. PBS reports that dollars are down 2 . 3 percent from last March and the number of pledges is down 5.9 percent. Last year, during Festival '85, 6,681 viewers pledged to West Michigan Public TV, compared with 6,027 in Festival '86.

According to George E. Lott, Jr., General Manager of WGVC/ WGVK, the outcome of this drive was especially important since the previous two member­ship drive fell short of their goals. In February, cutbacks

Michigan State Supreme Court Justice Dennis Archer will be the guest lecturer for a class entitled "Blacks and the U.S. Constitution" today at 12 noon. The special course focuses on the evolution of black freedom in the United States.

April Lunchbreak Concerts

The April Lunchbreak Series opens on Friday, April 4, with a performance by the GVSC Faculty String Quartet. Music professor and violinist Daniel Kovats directs the group, whose other members are violinists Steven Smith and David Prudon and cellist Lee Copenhaver.

On Monday, April 7, classical guitarist Joseph Breznikar will give a con­cert. He has earned a repu­tation as a superb guitarist in performances across North and South America and in the Far East. Breznikar is an artist-in-residence and teaches at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Oriana, a baroque and classical music ensemble, will perform on Thursday, April 10. The program will highlight the vocal and instrumental works of well-known as well as more unusual composers from 1700 to 1800. The group performs on instruments of that period.

Dance Kaleidoscope will perform in a return engagement on Tuesday, April 15. The Indianapolis-based modern dance company is widely acclaimed for its variety of dance styles and techniques.

The Lunchbreak Series for this academic year will conclude on Tuesday, April 22, with a sesquicentennial celebration of Mark Twain's birth featuring Michael Maudlin as the "sage of the Mississippi."

Comedy Offered as Theatre Spring Production

"The Real Inspector Hound," a comedy by Tom Stoppard, is the current production of Theatre Grand Valley. According to Director Laura Salazar, the play celebrates the use and abuse of logic in murder mysteries.

Cast in the leading role of Moon, a neurotic young drama critic, is Tom Hamilton. Gar y Maat, who appeared in several Stage Three productions, plays Birdboot, an established critic who is attracted to leading ladies.

Susan Walker-Kniola makes her Grand Rapids area debut as Cynthia, the sophisticated Lady Muldoon. Gina Gaskill, who appeared with The United Stage at the Boarshead Theatre last month, plays the "other woman."

Faculty Sketches Kathleen Haase, visiting

instructor of foreign languages, and Christine Rydel, professor of Russian, presented papers at the 90th annual meeting of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters, Sla v ic and East European Studies Section, held at Central Michigan University on March 14. Haase's paper was entitled "Kroleki i Udavy: A Mirror of Soviet Society;" and Rydel's paper was entitled "From Myth to Poem: Doctor Zhivago's Universal Voice."

Rosalyn Muskovitz, associate professor of art and design, will have an exhibit of her recent prints at Crown Hall, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, during April.

The pla y opened on March 28 and productions will continue on l\pril 4, 5, 11, and 12 at 8 p.m. in the Louis Armstrong Theatre.
