CAREER CENTER

PROGRAMS + MAJOR INITIATIVES |

Valuing career as a university responsibility, the CareerCenter maximizes partnerships across campus with facultyand staff, as well as within the community to focus on threemajor initiatives:

Student Engagement:• 4,530 students visited the Career Center through

individual appointments or drop-in advising (FY2018).• The Career Center created a new drop-in program,

CareerLab, to provide more time and space for students to work with professional and peer advisors. Resulted in 70% increase in student drop-ins (Fall 2018).

• Targeted outreach to first- and second-year students through strategic University partnerships. Research demonstrates early career planning positively impacts persistence and successful first destination outcomes.

• 8,219 students participated in experiential education (internships, practicums, clinicals, student teaching, co-ops, and field experiences).

• The internship award provided $15,000 in scholarships to students participating in unpaid experiences.

Employer Development & Engagement:• The biannual Career & Internship Fairs featured

230 employers and averaged 1,800+ student attendees per event.

• Hosted employer trainings, including the Inclusive Recruitment and Retention Conference and multiple Employer Internship trainings.

Faculty & Staff Engagement:• The internship Mini Grant awarded $40,250 to GVSU

departments resulting in 47 new employer relationships built, 211 employers participating in mini-grant sponsored events, and 305 internships generated.

Operated by Metro Health University of Michigan, the Campus Health Center medical team, including physicians and mid-level providers, are dedicated to the health and well-being of our patients and take great pride in helping the GVSU community. A variety of health services are offered, including:

• Allergy shots

• Diagnosis and treatment of short-term illnesses, injuries, and infections

• Immunizations, including Tetanus, Flu, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, MMR, Pneumonia, Shingles, Varicella, and Polio

• Laboratory and radiology services, including blood work and x-rays

• Prescriptions for medication and diagnostic tests

• Referrals for physical therapy and specialist visits

• Sexual health

• Sports medicine

• Women’s health, including gynecological exams and pap smears

• Provides care for children ages 2.5-12 years and support the GVSU campus and surrounding community for the past 46 years

• As one of the first organizations in Ottawa County to achieve accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the CEC strives to offer high quality childcare at an affordable cost

• Accesses to affordable campus childcare is reported as a major barrier to student parent persistence and degree completion

• Provides high quality educational experience through use of Creative Curriculum and Gold Plus Teaching Strategies

• Provides informal and formal conflict management services, is an advocate for fair treatment, and a resource for navigating various processes.

• Works with various offices on campus to provide workshops and trainings with supervisors and students on relaxation, and mindfulness exercises.

• Provides mediation services for students who have conflicts with other students or with supervisors, for students who have conflicts with faculty members, direct supervisors, or unit heads.

• A certified Intergroup Dialogue facilitator that utilizes those skills by either facilitating a one credit class for students or by providing a facilitation service to departments on campus with the Division of Inclusion and Equity.

Under the University Counseling Center, ACES provides specialized assessment, therapy, and group services.

In partnership with Admissions and others, the Dean of Students Office coordinates specifically designed programming for parents and supporters of new first year students. By covering a variety of topics, parents and supporters become better familiarized with Grand Valley State University and receive tips on how to best support their student.

PARENT & SUPPORTERS ORIENTATION

Grand Valley State University offers a “no wrong door” approach to serving military-connected students and dependents. The Veteran’s Network consists of representatives from several departments that provide services and resources with key coordination from the Dean of Students Office.

VETERANS NETWORK

Each year, a group of diverse students are selected to discuss topics facing the institution and of importance to students. The board’s perspectives help the Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students consider ways the University can better support students.
