Born on February 2, 1935, in Hosmer, SD to George and Emilia Wiederich, Luella attended country school near Hosmer and began working for St. Luke’s as a certified nursing assistant when she was a teenager following her family’s move to Aberdeen, SD. She married Harold Shafer on September 4, 1953, in Leola, SD and moved to their farm in Long Lake, SD to raise their four children. Luella and Harold later moved to Ashley, ND where Luella worked as a certified nursing assistant. In 1993, they moved to Redfield, SD and Luella became an active member of the community. She worked as a certified nursing assistant at the Redfield Assisted Living, helped at a local daycare center, and started the Quilting Bee at the Redfield Methodist Church. Luella was also an active member of the ALCW, Square Dance Camping Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She greatly enjoyed quilting, square dancing, sewing, ceramics, scrapbooking, embroidery, and bragging about her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Luella will be remembered by all her family members for her dedication to make each person a quilt for special occasions. Luella leaves her beloved husband Harold; her son Harley Shafer and his wife Tammy of Sioux Falls, SD; her son Harvey Shafer of Crooks, SD; her daughter Joy Powers and her husband Vincent of Hartford, SD; and her daughter Donna Davey of Newcastle, NE. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her two brothers – Leo and Elmer Wiederich; her sister Claudia Hasting and great grandchild Paxton Shafer. GRANNY'S QUILTS Granny learned to make quilts from her mother, who learned from her mother. Sewing was a necessity that all girls needed to learn. Granny grew to love sewing and it became a hobby of love. Quilting, sewing, and needlework became her way of keeping her mind busy, keeping active, and her way of keeping family members in her thoughts and memories. Holding one of her quilts in your arms, you may see the imperfections. The corners don't match, the color combination seems a little off, or the stitches are not straight or evenly spaced. Holding the quilt close, you can see the imperfections, perhaps not just in the quilt, but in ourselves as well. Yet, Granny made the quilt with the love that reached beyond the flaws. Upon finishing a quilt, she would say, "Well, that will have to do", or "That will be good enough." As you begin to look at the quilt from further away you see the full picture and beauty of the quilt. The colors begin to flow together, the corners seem to meet perfectly, and the stitches form a beautiful picture. It is the whole quilt that makes it as special as it is. It is the whole person that Granny loved, for whom she made the quilt. You can truly say "It is more than good enough." Wrapping yourself in a Granny- made quilt will remind you of her and all of her love for you. For that moment you will think of her............ and remember. Thank you Granny for all these beautiful memories. In Loving Memory Of Luella Alice Shafer Born: Died: February 2, 1935 June 7, 2017 Hosmer, SD Sioux Falls, SD
